The New York Yankees apparently don’t take kindly to Kate Upton “sleeping with the enemy.”
The supermodel filled in for Kelly Ripa on “Live! with Kelly and Michael” this morning and talked with co-host and former NFL defensive end Michael Strahan on a number of topics, including why exactly she was in New York this week.
This week’s 4-game series between the Yankees and Detroit Tigers had something to do with that, she confirmed.
“I used to be a really big Yankees fan,” Upton told Strahan, before continuing: “But I’m sleeping with the enemy.”
In case you’ve been living under a rock somewhere, she’s referring to right-hander Justin Verlander.
“Do tell,” Strahan responded amid laughter from the audience and Upton.
“My boyfriend plays for the Tigers,” Upton said. “I had to pick a side. And I felt it too, when I walked in. The Yankees told me, ‘You’re not allowed to wear a Tigers hat. You’re not allowed to wear any Tigers gear.’ It’s like a bad breakup.”
Verlander pitched in Wednesday’s game, going seven innings and giving up two runs on five hits, a walk and five strikeouts. Unfortunately, his offense didn’t back him up and the Yankees won 5-1, dropping Verlander to 10-10 on the season with a 4.57 ERA.
“They always blame me,” Upton said, referring to fans who blame her whenever Verlander struggles. “Everybody blames me.”
Upton also clued us on in Verlander’s demeanor on his pitching days: “He actually told me ‘I like to be angry before I pitch.’ He didn’t tell me before, so he’d seem like he was in a bad mood before he pitched, so I’d be like joke, joke, joke, joke, joke, trying to cheer him up. And then he got mad at me, he was like, ‘Stop making me laugh, I’m trying to be angry.’ I went straight to wearing a Yankees cap.
“He always says anytime we’re fighting I wear a Yankees hat. And when we’re getting along I’m wearing a Detroit hat.”
