Lifetime Prepping Marilyn Monroe Miniseries

The female-skewing cable network is developing Marilyn, a miniseries based on J. Randy Taraborrelli's book The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

24 and The Kennedys' Stephen Kronish is on board to pen the mini, with Sherrybaby's Laurie Collyer attached to direct the Marilyn Monroe entry. The entry hails from Asylum Entertainment, the production company behind Lifetime's June Carter Cash biopic Ring of Fire as well as Reelz Channel's ratings hit The Kennedys.

Asylum's Jonathan Koch and Steven Michaels will exec produce alongside Kronish and Keri Selig. Selig was attached to exec produce Reelz's Kennedys follow-up, After Camelot, which, like Marilyn, was based on a book by Taraborrelli.

Taraborrelli's book is considered the most definitive Monroe biography. Published in 2010, the title explored the actress/pin-up girl's relationship with her mentally ill mother, her foster mother and her legal guardian as well as Monroe's own mental illness and her relationships with her family and the Kennedys.

The project comes 52 years after Monroe's death and as Jessica Chastain is circling a role as the bombshell in New Regency's 2015 feature Blonde. Michelle Williams also earned an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Monroe in 2011's My Week With Marilyn. Charlotte Sullivan also portrayed Monroe in Reelz's The Kennedys. NBC's Smash also featured a play within the series based on Monroe's troubled life.

For Lifetime, the mini comes as the cabler has been exploring the lives of some of pop culture's biggest names, including Aaliyah, Whitney Houston, Elizabeth Taylor and Olympian Gabby Douglas, among others.

Kronish is repped by Gersh; Collyer is with Resolution, Principato-Young and Schreck Rose.

Sorta OT but I was thinking the other day about how much I loved "Bus Stop" when I was like 15/16 but watching it as a 28 yr old...that movie's kinda gross. :\
loveablescar 8th-Aug-2014 04:48 pm (UTC)
Kinda ot but someone was trying to convince me that she would have been 42 on her past birthday. I obviously need new friends

Lifetime should just stop. But replay some of the 90s movies because they are pretty good

lol did they also tell you she was like a size 22 IRL U GUISE I SWARE
feelgooderies 8th-Aug-2014 06:09 pm (UTC)
Like, how though? What was their reasoning? Can we even call it reasoning?
loveablescar 8th-Aug-2014 08:36 pm (UTC)
She says cameras are a new invention so its impossible for her to be older than 42 since all her pictures look "new." Dumbass.
torture_tactics 8th-Aug-2014 04:49 pm (UTC)
At first glance I read that as "female-skewering network" and was quite confused
rarkon 8th-Aug-2014 04:52 pm (UTC)
i bet it will be filled with those "Marilyn quotes" she never actually said
pillsburydoughb 8th-Aug-2014 04:59 pm (UTC)
“To all the girls that think you’re fat because you’re not a size zero, you’re the beautiful one, its society who’s ugly.”
rarkon 8th-Aug-2014 05:03 pm (UTC)
"if you can’t handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don’t deserve me at my best"
mrcumberbatch 8th-Aug-2014 05:12 pm (UTC)
i thought that was a real quote, its so frequently quoted. where do these fake quotes even come from?
rarkon 8th-Aug-2014 05:15 pm (UTC)

Her only "real" quote, “a career is wonderful, but you can’t curl up with it on a cold night”, it's from a movie she starred in.

Has anyone read the book? I've only read Barbara Leaming's (and found it pretty thorough), but if this one's apparently definitive, idk if I should get it too...

I'm probably going to get hate for this, but I think she's really overrated and people need to get over her.

Edit: I just get annoyed that she's so overexposed. Like me having to see news about certain celebs...

at this point I almost think she's underrated at least in terms of talent. she's become extremely overexposed as an icon and for her looks, but people often trash her (calling her a "whore" and stuff) and either don't acknowledge her talent or insult it. I honestly used to find her annoying and the cult surrounding her even more so, but then I actually watched some of her movies and she was really quite funny, talented, and charismatic. it's too bad that people don't talk about that aspect of her more. instead they just romanticize her genuinely sad life and talk about her looks
hrdtxpln 8th-Aug-2014 09:01 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I find that people romanticize dead female celebrities a lot and talk about their looks about how "classic" they were and "why can't today's girls look like that?" even though a lot of them do.

But anyway, I've never seen anything with Marilyn in it. I think I am a bit annoyed of the cult even though it is an irrational annoyance...since I don't know much about her other than what's been romanticized (e.g. her life, affairs, drugs, etc.)
flawedinsomniac 8th-Aug-2014 09:06 pm (UTC)
yeah, I've seen so many of those stupid memes on Facebook with like pictures of Marilyn Monroe or Audrey Hepburn on one side and then some modern celeb (Kim Kardashian or something) and it's like "WHAT HAPPENED???"/"WHY CAN'T GIRLS STILL BE CLASSY LIKE THIS?" and it's sooooo annoying

nah, it is an annoying cult! I've always found it annoying and I still do even now that I really enjoy Marilyn Monroe. people romanticize all the wrong things and only talk about her looks as if that's all that mattered when she actually had some talent and a great screen presence IMO! :)
xobubblegum 8th-Aug-2014 05:06 pm (UTC)
No no no no. Stop.

Let her rest in peace. It's going to be full of inaccuracies and quotes that she never said. The only people who are going to like it are the 15 year old girls who love her because of the image modern Hollywood has given her.

I adore Marilyn, but she was a troubled woman with an awful childhood who was extremely talented. Unfortunately the people in her life were not the people she needed, and she never overcame her problems.

Sorry. Rant over.
hilarylohan 8th-Aug-2014 05:10 pm (UTC)
Queen Hilary Duff needs to play Marilyn.
skankyoulater 8th-Aug-2014 05:15 pm (UTC)
didn't flop enough with the single?
pantless_deacon 8th-Aug-2014 05:27 pm (UTC)
My theory in these biopics and miniseries is always this: "It'll probably be awful, but who would you like to see in the role that would make it at least a LITTLE bit worth watching".

I also realize that most of the time when people cast "Marilyn Monroe" they cast her as "Marilyn Monroe" the woman we saw in like the more iconic shots. Therefore when the scenes call for a more broken down Marilyn, it doesn't sit well because they basically cast for a photo and style, more so than a character.

Like I could totally see Anna Faris pulling off a quite authentic Marilyn Monroe.
catelyn_tully 8th-Aug-2014 05:41 pm (UTC)
Wait wait is Jessica Chastain gonna be in an adaptation of the JCO book or what? I love that book
nutmegdealer 8th-Aug-2014 05:51 pm (UTC)
yeah, even though cbs already made a pretty good miniseries.
2wiceasnice 8th-Aug-2014 05:55 pm (UTC)
I dont understand the infatuation with her, I mean JFC get over her story already. Let it go!

Ill only watch it if its one of those hilarious campy movies like "Norma Jean & Marilyn"

eta: fuck autocorrect

I still need to read this book. And I still need Hollywood to stop with the MM flicks - and I say that as a stan.
ilouboutin 8th-Aug-2014 06:13 pm (UTC)
Also, if they insist on doing another MM film, at least do an attempt at "Fragments". That book is the closest we'll ever get to an autobiography. It's fascinating.
xcollsangelx 8th-Aug-2014 06:52 pm (UTC)
I'll watch, not gonna lie.

flawedinsomniac 8th-Aug-2014 08:59 pm (UTC)
I really like Marilyn Monroe, but I wish they'd give it a rest already...and like, there were so many other talented women from that era - why not focus on some of them if you want to do biopics or whatever?!
juicybrisket 9th-Aug-2014 12:30 am (UTC)
if its gonna be anything like the anna nicole movie,
how about no?
