Frank Darrabont in Talks to Direct SWatH Spinoff; Kristen Stewart Reportedly Out

Kristen Stewart is not expected to return as the female lead, though she may cameo in the spinoff

“Walking Dead” creator Frank Darabont is in early talks to direct “Snow White and the Huntsman 2”
for Universal Pictures and Roth Films, an individual familiar with the project has told TheWrap.

Darabont has not received an official offer yet but is expected to engage with the project when one does materialize, as Universal and producer Joe Roth are high on his take for the sequel/spinoff. He beat out Gavin O'Connor (“Warrior”) and Andy Muschietti (“Mama”) for the high-profile gig.

Meanwhile, Kristen Stewart is not expected to return for “SWATH 2,” which is expected to emphasize Chris Hemsworth‘s role as the titular Huntsman as was rumored around the release of the first movie. Thanks to “The Avengers,” Hemsworth is a much bigger star since the first film was released in June 2012. Since no script has been finalized, if Stewart does return, her appearance would likely be limited to a cameo or a handful of brief scenes.

As such, the spinoff may drop “Snow White” from the title and rebrand with a Huntsman-centric title.

Charlize Theron is also expected to reprise her role as the evil queen, who was left trapped in her own mirror at the end of the first film (uh??? I'm pretty sure she just got stabbed and died).

Rupert Sanders directed “Snow White and the Huntsman,” which grossed nearly $400 million worldwide. Universal plans to release the next film in the fairy tale series in 2016.

Darabont's film will be based on an Evan Spiliotopoulos script that was rewritten by Craig Mazin.

Darabont previously directed the Stephen King adaptations “The Shawshank Redemption,” “The Green Mile” and “The Mist,” and he also helped turn “The Walking Dead” into one of TV's biggest hits. He's represented by CAA, which did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

WHY!? Who event wants this? Getting greedy because of Maleficient's success, I bet.

the first one was horrid but chris was the best part.
AND maleficent success has everything to do with disney and Jolie.
phallus 27th-Jun-2014 12:34 pm (UTC)
That movie was fucking terrible, only redeeming part was the visuals. Charlize overacted while Kristen was just... there. Chris Hemsworth's accent was all over the place and the whole wife/snow white thing was an awkward mess. Also, why need a prince?
makahakat 27th-Jun-2014 01:01 pm (UTC)
lmao there was one review where the person was like "his accent was english by way of scotland and the shire" and i was like THATS IT EXACTLY!
sparkysparky 27th-Jun-2014 12:36 pm (UTC)
Dude, I want this. Hemsworth looked FINE in the first one. I'll see it for eye candy purposes.
zodgory 27th-Jun-2014 09:35 pm (UTC)
My weak ass will also watch it for those purposes, but he'd better have more than that one half-assed shirtless scene.

sparkysparky 27th-Jun-2014 10:21 pm (UTC)
Good to know I'm not the only one with good taste!! Honestly he should spend the whole movie naked
callmemaybeplz 27th-Jun-2014 12:38 pm (UTC)
Wasn't this originally supposed to be a trilogy anyway?
tracygee 27th-Jun-2014 12:41 pm (UTC)
I still don't understand this. The first one did $400 million at the box office, true, but it also cost $175 million and they reportedly spent $100 million in P&A.

So, assuming they get half the box office take ($200 million), they lost a ton of money in the theaters. I'm sure they made a small profit once DVD, VOD, and TV money was figured in, but still... not enough to warrant a sequel, no matter who it is starring.
bossm 27th-Jun-2014 02:48 pm (UTC)
They're eager to create a brand. Even the producers of the flop Mortal Instruments want to make a sequel.
justkeepworking 27th-Jun-2014 12:42 pm (UTC)
Having Kirsten gone and Frank at the helm would be a HUGE improvement. They could easily have the Huntsman switch jobs to Woodsman and he meets (20yo) Little Red Riding Hood. Only problem is who to cast; so few non-bland young actress...
callmemaybeplz 27th-Jun-2014 12:45 pm (UTC)
Maybe the actress who stars in the Carrie Diaries?
manita_bestija 27th-Jun-2014 01:15 pm (UTC)
too bad you said 20yo, I would like to see little Rue (Amandla) play it.
justkeepworking 27th-Jun-2014 02:15 pm (UTC)
Aww that would be cute. I'm just figuring they'll go for aged up Red so she, the wolf and Hunt/Woodsman can have a ~sexy love triangle.

I imagined Jennifer Lawrence as she was in 'American Hustle' in a gritty epic fantasy movie, and lmao.
insecuredesign 27th-Jun-2014 05:17 pm (UTC)
Holliday Grainger would be great imo.
zodgory 27th-Jun-2014 09:30 pm (UTC)
The major upgrade in suggested director is what surprises me most about this sequel.
lipkinlip 27th-Jun-2014 12:42 pm (UTC)
Some kristen fans are pisses and calling it sexist or somthing because it's focus on Chris or the fact that Kristen isn't in it
winniechili 27th-Jun-2014 01:27 pm (UTC)
I mean it is kind of shitty that it went from a movie about a "strong" female (I didn't actually finish watching it but didn't she like lead a battle or something?) to having the female lead kicked off the franchise to focus on the dude.

But K-Stew, so meh.
bossm 27th-Jun-2014 02:50 pm (UTC)
Her leading the troops was so stupid.
emptyobsidian 27th-Jun-2014 04:08 pm (UTC)
I agree I can see why people are criticizing the decision. Kristen is such a dead fish in front of the camera though. Her acting in this movie was some of the worst I can remember recently.
winter_lace 27th-Jun-2014 12:44 pm (UTC)
they're still going on about this kiss weak crap?
wheresandrae 27th-Jun-2014 12:45 pm (UTC)
Everything about the first one was shit.
starsremain 27th-Jun-2014 12:55 pm (UTC)
God bless the first movie for the memories it brought <3
bnlmaroonvwbug 27th-Jun-2014 02:24 pm (UTC)
So true. I'm convinced because I was flipping my shit when the scandal happened is the reason why my fiancé asks about what's everyone oh no they didn't-ing about every so often, lol.
hammersxstrings 27th-Jun-2014 02:58 pm (UTC)
that initial post when that broke was so great
onyxobsidian 27th-Jun-2014 12:55 pm (UTC)
If it's a spin off, why WOULD she be the female lead?
sarahsumbrella 28th-Jun-2014 04:28 am (UTC)
Has your icon always moved or have I seriously not been paying attention?
onyxobsidian 28th-Jun-2014 05:25 am (UTC)
Always moved but don't worry, I get this reply at least once a week.
megedeborch 27th-Jun-2014 12:58 pm (UTC)
Yeah get him to join the dark side and fuck shit up with the Evil Queen.
scarlettnoire 27th-Jun-2014 01:12 pm (UTC)
That would be so sexy.
therearewords 27th-Jun-2014 01:48 pm (UTC)
Mmmmm sex slave.
zodgory 27th-Jun-2014 09:35 pm (UTC)
Yeah, towards the end I was really hoping for Charlize to capture him as a sex slave or something.
makahakat 27th-Jun-2014 12:59 pm (UTC)
what a terrible movie. can they at least hire a coach for hemsworth's accent this time pls
zodgory 27th-Jun-2014 09:40 pm (UTC)
Lol! Yeah, I don't know why Chris doesn't ever seem to have dialect coaches. From people who have seen early screenings of his next two non-Thor movies, his accent is wonky as hell in the whaling movie whereas someone else wished he'd just had his natural one in the Mann movie because they don't know what the hell American one he's aiming for.
goldenshopper 27th-Jun-2014 01:01 pm (UTC)
Kristen was terrible in this. and the non-existent chemistry between her and Chris made the movie even more boring
spider 27th-Jun-2014 01:04 pm (UTC)
I love Charlize, but she was awful in this. It's going to be so weird without Kristen playing SW, unpopular opinion but I actually liked her.
weatherstaff 27th-Jun-2014 01:59 pm (UTC)
standing there or lying there and looking surprised.

Snow White was the most useless Disney princess of all. Her voice made me want to punch myself in the face.
