D'Angelo's new album will be out this year, according to his manager. The soul artist has not released a studio album since 2000's Voodoo, despite several announcements over the years that it was close to release.
D'Angelo's manager Kevin Liles told Billboard: "There'll be an album this year: there's 14 records so far. We might have a couple of bonus records, but all the recording is basically done and we're mixing and mastering now. Definitely, he'll be back."
On the subject of the album's multiple delays, he said: "With D'Angelo it was a process. He didn't perform for 10 years and he's been working on an album for the past 12 years." He also revealed that D'Angelo told him that: "I wanna be sure that the baby I'm about to have - the album - that I take it to the point where it's all it can be."
According to Liles, the new album has "a rock influence" but is also "very melodic". "There's an influence of all the things he loves," he said. "There's James Brown, there's Prince, and everything people grew up loving D'Angelo for, from Brown Sugar to Voodoo. It's a mixture and an evolution of where he is right now."
He also confirmed that the album will be released in 2014, saying that it will appear "sooner than later!"
