First LQ glimpse at Cheek to Cheek

Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga made a surprise appearance at the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in New York City Monday, performing and hosting a master class in the school’s Tony Bennett Concert Hall.

Bennett opened the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in 2001 in his hometown of Astoria, Queens. Though he typically attends graduation, this year he is unable due to his tour schedule. So, instead, he brought his friend and collaborator Gaga with him to the last day of classes for something special.

Speaking with moderator Lester Holt of NBC, Bennett and Gaga talked about jazz music, The Great American Songbook, creativity and other subjects, fielding questions from members of the the 700-student audience.

The two then performed a couple classic American songs, with Bennett on "The Very Thought of You" and Gaga singing Cole Porter's "Every Time We Say Goodbye." They followed that by playfully serenading each other with the standard "I Can’t Give You Anything But Love," adding a cheek-to-cheek slow dance.

"When I first heard Gaga sing, my reaction was that she is going to be bigger than Elvis," said Bennett. "She is so bright and intelligent and she has it. In jazz you either got it, the syncopation, the rhythm or you don't, and when I heard Gaga I said she's got it!"

Gaga chimed in, talking about singing with Bennett — a relationship that began when the two performed at the Robin Hood Foundation benefit gala in 2011, and soon after the two duetted on "The Lady Is a Tramp" for Bennett’s "Duets II" album.

"When I am with Tony I feel like I am fifteen years old at home listening to Ella and Coltrane records," she said. "The way he sings is effortless and so prolific. It’s so liberating to be able to sing jazz, especially at this point in my career."

The event closed with student choirs performing a rendition of Tony Bennett’s "Smile" and Lady Gaga’s "Applause."

Gaga and Tony Bennett are currently collaborating on a jazz album planned for release later this year. Several musicians have perviously done master classes at the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts, including Billy Joel and Paul McCartney.

Sounds pretty I might like this more than Artpop if it ever gets released.
scheisse 17th-Jun-2014 10:23 am (UTC)
It's def. getting a release. I believe she filmed some promo for it yesterday for the Today Show and it appears she might actually put some effort into this rather than it being just some side project
chthonist 17th-Jun-2014 03:59 am (UTC)
I'm really looking forward to this.

I normally can't stand her- but, no one can deny that she is a fantastic singer.

I'm hoping it will be grand.
queer_bee 17th-Jun-2014 04:00 am (UTC)
Well I'm excited for this record and I really like this look on Gaga.

Also, i kinda want Gaga's next solo record to be Nora Jones-que. Lol

lady_gaga 17th-Jun-2014 09:36 am (UTC)
she's so talented

I feel ARTPOP was her one last big goodbye to party pop and this is the beginning of a more serious Gaga

She sounds good on standards, so I'll check it out, but I know her fans who are always on the hunt for new "bops" to shake their longbacks to are probably livid.
scheisse 17th-Jun-2014 10:21 am (UTC)
A lot of the fans I know are oddly excited. The only ones who don't like this are the ones who feel it's more of a career move at the moment than something genuine since she never planned to go all out with it like it seems she's doing now.

a performance art piece, a social commentary on life after ARTFLOP, a reverse decay of the superstar expedition

Rod Stewart revived his career with this genre...milking the cash cow for all it was worth with a series of 5 CDs spanning about a ten year period. Won his first Grammy for the third one....Having the record for the biggest selling cd series and selling over 20 million total at his advanced age and time in his career....he isn't even known for this music. Epic. God he is.
scheisse 17th-Jun-2014 10:20 am (UTC)
It is a definite career move. She always falls back onto jazz to prove she's talented and it works most of the time.
gorlplz 17th-Jun-2014 12:25 pm (UTC)
out of the current pop sistren, nosega's tone fits jazz/swing the best i feel

she should ditch the artflop era completely and really focus on this, get dat critical acclaim and serve timeless bops

she might snatch a grammy or two for it as well

Jazz isn't my thing so I'm not really here for this but I'm glad she's doing her thing and using her vocals, which many pop stars today don't do.

People have been saying for the past four years that she needs to "focus on her talent rather than the gimmicks" and, well, this might be just that, though with Steven Klein and Bob Wilson, she might have something up her sleeve.

I personally do not care about this album but it might be a good career move if it turns out to be good and gets critics back on her side.

Mte. My dad randomly was like "what happened to Lady Gaga?" And we got into a discussion on how she needs to play her cards right and stop having the gimmicks over look her talent.

I miss when her looks were not so shock value. They looked good on her and only her yet could still see people walking in the outfits. Nowadays it's more of a cry for attention or even the joke people would say about her just rolling in glue and having whatever sticks to her these days
