DreamWorks Animation Sets Release Dates for a Plethora of Sequels

How to Train Your Dragon 2 is getting ready for an excellent weekend, and in the buzz and excitement surrounding the film DreamWorks Animation has released a slew of release dates for their upcoming sequels and adaptations.

The list includes some highly anticipated films, like Kung Fu Panda 3, How to Train Your Dragon 3, and Madagascar 4.

What's interesting about DreamWorks is although the company doesn't soar at the box office domestically, their films do incredibly well worldwide. Take The Croods last year. The film did moderately well at $187 million domestic, but took the globe by storm, generating $587 million worldwide. Nearly 70% of the movie's revenue came from foreign countries. This also goes for movies like Puss in Boots (73% from foreign revenue) and Kung Fu Panda 2 (75% from foreign revenue).

Compare that to Pixar or Disney. Monsters University and Frozen last year made about 65% of their profits from foreign markets. Although it doesn't seem like much, if you think about it in fractions (1/3 from domestic revenue versus 1/4) it's significantly different.

- Kung Fu Panda 3: December 23, 2015
- How to Train Your Dragon 3: June 17, 2016
- Captain Underpants: January 13, 2017
- The Croods 2: November 3, 2017
- Madagascar 4: May 18, 2018
- Puss in Boots 2: Nine Lives & 40 Thieves: November 2, 2018

Which movie are you most excited to see, if any at all?

i want to see httyd 2 so bad
i heard it's really good
sandstorm 13th-Jun-2014 08:53 pm (UTC)
It's a little weird - personally I like it much more, the story is better, but how it's presented is a little disjointed, but the first one is better to me.
devourlove 13th-Jun-2014 08:55 pm (UTC)
the first one came on tv the other day and just seeing how the old animation compares to the new one has me hype lol
nightfury 13th-Jun-2014 08:59 pm (UTC)
Its amazing, there are some issues with pacing and I wasn't a fan of how they explained the history of Drago or Valka, but other than that its really damn good
sandstorm 13th-Jun-2014 09:21 pm (UTC)
"I couldn't come back!"....why?
blood_opal 13th-Jun-2014 10:11 pm (UTC)
There were some scene transitions that bugged me because they felt too abrupt and Valka's introduction could have been handled better but I really, really enjoyed the movie overall.
bloopbloop01 13th-Jun-2014 08:46 pm (UTC)
probably puss and boots, because i was surprised at how much i liked the first one.
feelgooderies 13th-Jun-2014 08:51 pm (UTC)
I was surprised, too. I loved the character in Shrek, but wasn't sure how well the character would work with a whole movie based around him, but I really liked it.
svexsal 13th-Jun-2014 08:51 pm (UTC)
The animation of Puss was always my favorite part of the Shrek sequels.
vehiclesshockme 13th-Jun-2014 08:48 pm (UTC)
I actually thought The Croods was cute but the idea of a sequel is a little meh.

Never saw Puss in Boots but I recently saw the fourth Shrek for the first time and it was so bad.
badass4pres 13th-Jun-2014 08:52 pm (UTC)
The Croods was so weird. The first half was the emancipation of the girl and then... the second half was a complete reversal about a boy taking the power ~yey patriarchy~ like wtf

It was cute tho. But very strange.
sandstorm 13th-Jun-2014 08:52 pm (UTC)
PiB was actually quite good.
bas_saarebas 13th-Jun-2014 08:56 pm (UTC)
The only good thing about Shrek 4 was badass Fiona
pillamelai 13th-Jun-2014 09:05 pm (UTC)
You think Shrek 4 was bad, watch the third one. :(
yondaime8893 13th-Jun-2014 08:51 pm (UTC)
Captain Underpants and Httyd 2 and 3 are the only things I'm kind of looking forward to. Why is Madagascar still at thing? Like, that's a 13 year spanning franchise.
sandstorm 13th-Jun-2014 08:54 pm (UTC)
M3 is probably my favorite of them all, but IA, we didn't need FOUR.

dommon5844 13th-Jun-2014 09:06 pm (UTC)
MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! Double feature last night! :)
svexsal 13th-Jun-2014 08:52 pm (UTC)
I really enjoyed Puss in Boots and now that Antonio Banderas is single again...
devourlove 13th-Jun-2014 08:53 pm (UTC)
I'll tolerate HTTYD3 and KFP3 but i don't need the rest of any of those. in fact, i thought Madagascar ended with them joining the circus (and idek why i watched 3? it was on tv w/e)
umbrella_smile 13th-Jun-2014 08:56 pm (UTC)
I loved the Croods, but I am so sick of sequels.
hawkguy 13th-Jun-2014 08:57 pm (UTC)
HTTYD2 and KFP2, but otherwise wish they'd move on to new things.
sookehhh 13th-Jun-2014 08:58 pm (UTC)

donatello 13th-Jun-2014 08:58 pm (UTC)

musicnkisses 13th-Jun-2014 11:22 pm (UTC)

crucified 13th-Jun-2014 09:04 pm (UTC)
I didn't like the first Kung Fu Panda that much and I didn't see the second one but I'll prob see the third because Mads Mikkelsen has a part in it lmao.
karinette001 13th-Jun-2014 09:39 pm (UTC)
lmfao omg really???
from Hannibal (serious subject) to Kung-Fu Panda lmao
crucified 13th-Jun-2014 09:45 pm (UTC)
lmao yes. I'm glad he's having fun and everything but I can't believe I have to sit through Kung Fu Panda for him now lmao. I suppose I've made it through (much) worse for other actors I love, though. </3
phillymademe 13th-Jun-2014 09:08 pm (UTC)
i love the Madagascar movies, ngl. I'd probably watch the 4th one.
