#Ubifail No female lead in Assassin's Creed Unity is 'unfortunate but a reality of game development'

Female lead was planned, but canned as it would have doubled development efforts.

Ubisoft chose not to include playable female characters in Assassin's Creed Unity because it would have "doubled the work", Ubisoft technical director James Therien has told VideoGamer.com.

"It was on our feature list until not too long ago, but it's a question of focus and production," Therien explained. "So we wanted to make sure we had the best experience for the character. A female character means that you have to redo a lot of animation, a lot of costumes [inaudible]. It would have doubled the work on those things. And I mean it's something the team really wanted, but we had to make a decision... It's unfortunate, but it's a reality of game development."

When pressed on the issue, specifically that we didn't think his excuse would wash with the community given the amount of resources at the studio's disposal, Therien continued:

"Again, it's not a question of philosophy or choice in this case at all I don't really [inaudible] it was a question of focus and a question of production. Yes, we have tonnes of resources, but we're putting them into this game, and we have huge teams, nine studios working on this game and we need all of these people to make what we are doing here." Shut up lmao

Assassin's Creed Unity launches on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC on October 28.

So apparently the realities~ of developing games are fixed and immutable, like physics or some shit. These douchebros act like they're not the ones making the rules. rmfe. Sick of this.

I think also the pressure the distributors put on them to fit timelines also comes into play. AC is on a once a year release schedule these days so while this game has probably had 2ish years in the development cycle it has all be under the pressure of meeting that release window.

At least EA allowed Bioware time actually create a game after the mess that happened when they fast tracked DA2's release/development.

Ugh what a bunch of bs.

So the idea was to have people choose their character? Idk, all of it could have been avoided if they just went "alright, this lead is female." It's not that fucking hard.

They could build Noah's ark....

Just not any of the female animals on it. It's too hard.

and i was gonna buy this shit too
fantaesticbaby 11th-Jun-2014 01:34 pm (UTC)
lol piss off

if you can't be bothered to make a female lead then I can't be bothered to give you my money.

Soz it's just an unfortunate reality of hating sexism.
finchburg 11th-Jun-2014 03:20 pm (UTC)
Yup I have no desire to buy this game now that this bs has been brought to light. I was hopeful because you don't get lots of true co-op these days but this attitude blows.
fantaesticbaby 11th-Jun-2014 03:25 pm (UTC)
What I hate the most is how insultingly shitty their excuses are.
Much smaller and less well-funded studios manage to make varied characters (in gender/race/species etc) but somehow they can't do it?

I'm boycotting this shitty series until they get their act together bc there are plenty of other games that actually have female rep
idontwannago55 11th-Jun-2014 01:35 pm (UTC)
ffs

you had TEN studios working on this
lord 11th-Jun-2014 01:35 pm (UTC)
You have 9 studios and not one could recycle certain assets of the female characters from the other parts of the series including those who did action sequences?

Bye.
crystalzelda 11th-Jun-2014 01:35 pm (UTC)
lmao lazy ass liars

misogynistic pricks need to come up with a better "excuse"

Ubisoft chose not to include playable female characters in Assassin's Creed Unity because it would have "doubled the work" [...] "It was on our feature list until not too long ago.

So it was an idea for a long time but you just didn't want to do it? What, would she be 'too hard' to animate, and she always had to 'look pretty, even if she was angry'?
kaiserschmarrn 11th-Jun-2014 01:36 pm (UTC)
Also, how come they were able to animate Aveline then? It's not like they've never had a playable female character and Liberation HD put her on the other consoles/PC as well. They should just be honest and admit that they believe less people would buy the game. It's bs either way.

I hate that I will probably play this game and like it. I can't help it, AC is my favorite game series :(
lord 11th-Jun-2014 01:49 pm (UTC)
I'll get it used most likely but I am glad to hear women in The Division and the next Rainbow Six game as I was going to get those.

kaiserschmarrn 11th-Jun-2014 02:06 pm (UTC)
Yeah I might get it used... The Division looks good but nothing beats my love for a historical setting. I really want to play some female characters though so I'll keep an eye on those other games.

kiarrith 11th-Jun-2014 02:08 pm (UTC)
we'll own it. but i'll wait and buy it second hand to avoid giving them moneys. sigh.
wesaucereyes 11th-Jun-2014 03:02 pm (UTC)
I'll end up buying it when it comes out because I am a complete sucker for how pretty the settings are then promptly get pissed on how all the badass female characters aren't even playable.
kittymink 11th-Jun-2014 03:40 pm (UTC)
Exactly, they don't think it would sell. Ubisoft loves their stubbly white dudes.
fauxfaia 12th-Jun-2014 12:34 am (UTC)
Aveline used more of Connor's animations than Edward did
wesaucereyes 11th-Jun-2014 01:37 pm (UTC)
So it takes twice the time to make animate a pair of barely noticeable boobs under the robes? oh okay.
crystalzelda 11th-Jun-2014 01:39 pm (UTC)
impossible! We all know female characters means having gravity defying gigantic titties, duh, what else

and that was just TOO HARD to animate for those poor, incompetent saps </3
mrcumberbatch 11th-Jun-2014 02:11 pm (UTC)
mte, could they not have just left the body basically the same and just changed the face??
wesaucereyes 11th-Jun-2014 03:00 pm (UTC)
honestly, just could have played it like they did for mary read. similar clothes, tiny beasts, complete badass. tell me how that takes twice as much time?
whizzingfizbee 11th-Jun-2014 01:54 pm (UTC)
Signed.
