Sam Smith’s debut album becomes the UK fastest selling of 2014

Sam Smith’s reign over the UK music charts continues with his debut album going straight in at number one.
In fact, not only has The Lonely Hour sold an incredible 101 thousand copies over the last seven days, it has become the fastest selling debut album of 2014 so far.
The news comes a week after the British singer-songwriter scored his third number one single with Stay With Me.
‘It’s amazing!’ Sam told ‘I was a bit scared a few days ago because I knew that Coldplay’s album had come out. I’m so happy!'
It’s been an incredible twelve months for Smith: he scored his first Number 1 single last May after featuring on Naughty Boy’s La La La.

In January he went on to top the BBC’s Sound Of 2014 poll, while in February he collected the Critics’ Choice prize at the BRIT Awards, and claimed his second number one single with Money On My Mind.

He also made broadcasting history just last week, when he performed a live song throughout an entire three and a half advertising break of Channel 4′s Alan Carr’s Chatty Man. Watch the entire performance below with one of the performance featuring Jessie Ware:

The feat was part of a Google Play advertising campaign for its music and streaming service. Sadly for everyone not involved, the whole thing went very smoothly with no obvious hitches at all. Which means the only thing we can focus on to pad this story out is to mention that for the first 30 seconds of the video, an iPhone being held up by an audience member sits in the front of the shot.

Completely REFUSING to comment on this, Google UK’s Azi Eftekhari said in a stock quote post-event: “We’re so delighted Google Play Music, Sam and his millions of fans could be a part of music and TV history this evening. Google Play’s all about connecting music lovers with the tracks and artists they love”.

Meanwhile, Coldplay may have slipped into second place this week with latest offering Ghost Stories. In just two weeks, Chris Martin and co’s sixth studio album is now fast approaching a quarter of a million UK sales. Paolo Nutini’s Caustic Love climbs three places to number three, while Paloma Faith’s A Perfect Contradiction is at number four and Michael Jackson’s Xscape completes the Top Five.
