Carmen Carrera Clashes w/ RuPaul In 'Tranny' Controversy

Lovely "transbeauty model" Carmen Carrera didn't seem to appreciate drag icon RuPaul's commentary on the use of the word "tranny."

We detailed RuPaul's comments here along with his response to Logo's supposed "distancing" from him

To paraphrase, Ru says he loves the word "tranny" and denounces what he describes as the "fringe" individuals that are attempting to speak for the transgender community.

It appears Carmen Carrera may not be on board with RuPaul and his supporters.

She tweeted:

Carmen previously expressed her feelings surrounding the use of the term "She-Male" on Facebook, posting:

We're a little worried for anyone that comes for the Queen, but Carmen--especially as a transgender woman--has the right to her opinion, correct?? What's your take, Instincters??

its crazy how much hate she is getting, I thought this issue was kinda straight forward and clear cut especially since gay people deal with a lot of slurs
helloneworld 28th-May-2014 02:02 am (UTC)
i think there has been more hate towards Ru, though, for this.
donatacci 28th-May-2014 02:41 am (UTC)
nope, not even close.
xbenji65 28th-May-2014 03:36 am (UTC)
nope.
haine 28th-May-2014 09:07 am (UTC)
when it comes to places like this, that's probably how it looks but in her own communities (drag race, drag in general, etc) she has the unpopular opinion thus hate from all around.
hellicoptajuuce 28th-May-2014 02:54 am (UTC)
Sis the gay community is probably one of the most ignornant community there is
childish 28th-May-2014 12:15 am (UTC)
Her Facebook post is a beautiful, level-headed and diplomatic response.

I think Carmen vs Rupaul is a perfect example of the difference in the times and the attitudes that come with it. In any minority group, the old guard and the new guard have different battles/struggles and I think sometimes it's hard to see how much things have changed and how much young people want different things.
sdpt 28th-May-2014 12:45 am (UTC)
like Torrance and Big Red?
childish 28th-May-2014 12:52 am (UTC)
Their battles were different

But that doesn't change that she's. still. Big. Red.

I agree with Carmen.
klmnumbers 28th-May-2014 12:15 am (UTC)
I know most ontders hate her, but Courtney Act wrote a very nice Facebook post on the topic - one of the more well reasoned and intelligent ones from the RPDR queens imo.

lconic 28th-May-2014 01:56 am (UTC)
Agreed.

Did you see Mimi Imfurst try to come for her on that? Weak.
klmnumbers 28th-May-2014 01:58 am (UTC)
I only saw Courtney's response. Apparently, Mimi posted a picture of an old event Courtney did a few years ago with the t-word on it. So, Courtney commented on Mimi's post and explained that she was ignorant, but through education and experience has learned not to use it, etc.

So, Mimi apparently deleted the post. Courtney reposted it to her own page with her comment - which, again, makes me like her even more.
ichdontthinksoo 28th-May-2014 02:57 am (UTC)
Not surprised that cancer disguised as a drag queen would try to come for her. God, I fucking hate Mimi.
rainbowren 28th-May-2014 02:35 am (UTC)
Courtney is lovely, it's ridiculous how people can hate her. She's innocent and nothing but nice.
sassandthecity 28th-May-2014 12:16 am (UTC)
I really liked Raja coming out in defense of Carmen.
missing_mile_15 28th-May-2014 02:00 am (UTC)
Oh that's good, I loved Raja on the show. Do you know what she said?
sassandthecity 28th-May-2014 02:07 am (UTC)
"Referring to Carmen Carrera as a she/he is not an insult to her. It is an insult to yourself for showing yourself as an idiot" is one of her recent Facebook statuses.
turi 28th-May-2014 12:17 am (UTC)
As a straight, cis gendered, pressed white girl, I am outraged.
Outraged I tell you, as only I know what's best for the lgbt community.

it was heartbreaking to see how disrespectful and hostile most people reacted to carmen's fb posts ugh

i think courtney's reaction to shemailgate/trannygate was the most eloquent and i 100% agree with her approach:

klmnumbers 28th-May-2014 12:20 am (UTC)
Yup. I already really loved Courtney, but her comments solidified that for me. This whole mess made me unfollow some queens I really loved (Manila and pandora). So it was nice to have one surprise me with her intelligence and compassion. #teamcourtney
tiltyahead 28th-May-2014 12:26 am (UTC)
Courtney is so diplomatic and well-spoken.
cordyceps 28th-May-2014 12:26 am (UTC)
Courtney came off unfavorable on the show but I do like a lot of her comments about body image, self confidence, and this just made me like her even more.
ferelden 28th-May-2014 12:33 am (UTC)
My god the comments to that post are horrific.
asymptom 28th-May-2014 01:12 am (UTC)
ia but, though I understand why people do it, I still kinda hate the whole spreading the blame between ~both sides~ thing when there is typically one side that needs to be clearly told that they are to blame.

People demanding respect shouldn't be told that they are as much of a problem as those disrespecting them
treegrowth 28th-May-2014 01:49 am (UTC)
ia. the people who are levelheaded and right always get the most hateful things spewed at them.
elementalranger 28th-May-2014 12:19 am (UTC)
smdh @ what Bianca said about Carmen. So disgusting.

moustacherider 28th-May-2014 12:20 am (UTC)
what did Bianca say?
elementalranger 28th-May-2014 12:20 am (UTC)
"And let’s face it, we wouldn’t know who the fuck Carmen Carrera was if she didn’t fuckin’ get on Drag Race. Maybe she should take what’s left of her dick and stick it in her mouth and shut the fuck up."
weavewhipper 28th-May-2014 01:12 am (UTC)
i said as soon as she won that the backlash was minutes away now. and sure enough... lol winning was probably the best and worst thing to happen to her
sansalewis 28th-May-2014 12:19 am (UTC)
There is nothing in this world that a cis gay man that loves drag queens, hates more than a transwoman.
attackoftheburn 28th-May-2014 12:23 am (UTC)
While I want to side with Carmen... the only thing I want to know is why she never spoke out about Shemale before, say in the season of the show that she was in, or when it was used in ANY of the seasons during her transition. She never had a problem with it until it became a story. Why, that's all I wanna know
liewitnessnews 28th-May-2014 12:25 am (UTC)
mte
cordyceps 28th-May-2014 12:25 am (UTC)
Because Carmen has a name now, a platform, where she didn't before. You don't cuss out who's paying your bills, and since Ru ain't anymore, she can say what's on her mind.
attackoftheburn 28th-May-2014 12:32 am (UTC)
Why not say something last year then, or the start of this season? Why wait until the Female or Shemale episode, when the word "Shemale" is the thing that offends you, and it's used literally every single week?
patentpending 28th-May-2014 12:28 am (UTC)
Because, given the reaction to people speaking out about this issue in the drag community, maybe before she wasn't in the position or even the mindset to do so. Maybe now that she's stepped outside of an environment and community that coddles that sort of behavior, on top of coming out, she feels she can and should.
dorisdaydoll 28th-May-2014 03:35 am (UTC)
Maybe because she's guaranteed to get intense hatred and threats like the ones she's getting now? Maybe because dealing with the hatred that margenalized people get when they challenge their oppression is intensely stressful and could be traumatic? GEE I WONDER WHY
cordyceps 28th-May-2014 12:24 am (UTC)
Man, this issue is so complicated. On the one hand, LGBT representation in the media owes a great deal to RuPaul, and on the other hand what he's doing is hurting a lot of people. People need to understand that words change, and words do have power. I love Carmen, and I can't even deal with the shit that she's getting because of this.
soho 28th-May-2014 05:47 am (UTC)
Uh, no. The gay community and esp. the trans community owe Ru nothing. And you don't get a pass for good deeds. You can't just use slurs that don't belong to you and get away with it because you're gay, end of story.
patentpending 28th-May-2014 12:25 am (UTC)
I don't know why I was shocked at the vitriol and stupidity Carmen was met with when she spoke out about this, and then I had to go on an unfollow spree of pretty much every drag race contestant I was following because they were doing the same damn thing, and that was few to begin with. I knew that the drag community and it's gay followers were problematic before but before it was constrained enough that I could at least enjoy the actual entertainment, but this has turned me off almost completely.
workbitch 28th-May-2014 12:26 am (UTC)
Ugh. The true faces of some people in this ongoing debacle have all been noted for me.

Courtney and Dela have IMO said the best things
patentpending 28th-May-2014 12:31 am (UTC)
Suprisingly, Willam too: "Stop ?'ing me bout the YouGotShemale thing. I will avoid it by politely stepping around that pile of dogshit instead of trying to cartwheel through it. I just wanna be entertainted. I don't speak on stuff that doesn't apply to me like racial slurs in casual tongues, abortion or yacht safety."
ferelden 28th-May-2014 12:35 am (UTC)
Willam can be surprisingly conscientious when it comes to taboo topics like this.
cordyceps 28th-May-2014 12:39 am (UTC)
Willam is super intelligent honestly. I met him in person and he's very well spoken and witty.

Yeah. So many of the other queens have really shown their asses over this. And so many fans have written the most disgusting shit about Carmen. I just hate it.
onceupon_awish 28th-May-2014 12:38 am (UTC)
What did Dela say?
lady_lockhart 28th-May-2014 01:19 am (UTC)
the rpdr reddit had a list of the things the queens have said about this whole debate. Basically it's Ben, Courtney, and Jinkx (+ delta but her post is more about defending Carmen) who have spoken up and are not acting like asses. I think Joslyn and Adore have said they agree/like what Ben has said about the whole thing too.

As if we need more of her English 090 critical reading.

It's his go-to "intellectual tweet" whenever he's defending some behavior, whether it's his own or Madonna using the n-word.

Lol right? It's like was "1984" just too obvious a reference or were you just absent from your high school freshmen English class the week they read that one?
