Get ready for a big fat Greek sequel.
The stars and producers of 2002's My Big Fat Greek Wedding have reunited to make a sequel to one of the most successful independent movies of all time.
Nia Vardalos has written the script for the project and will reprise her role as a first generation Greek-American woman, while John Corbett is attached to reprise his role as the non-Greek who fell in love with her.
Playtone, HBO and Gold Circle are back as the entities behind the new project. Rita Wilson, Tom Hanks, and Gary Goetzman are returning as producers (the latter two via their Playtone shingle). Paul Brooks, Scott Niemeyer, Norm Waitt and Steven Shareshian will exec produce. Vardalos will also exec produce.
Good Universe is handling international sales.
Greek Wedding famously began as a one-woman play from Vardalos that told of her life growing up in a Greek household in Winnipeg and then marrying a non-Greek. Wilson, who is half-Greek, saw the L.A. play and brought it to the attention of husband Hanks.
The rest, along with $241 million at the domestic box office and a CBS sitcom spin-off My Big Fat Greek Life, is history.
Joel Zwick directed the first movie although no director is currently attached to the sequel.
The plot of the new script involves the reveal of a family secret and a new wedding, described as bigger and fatter, that brings the Greek clan together again.
Vardalos has seen her life go through many changes since breaking out with Greek Wedding , which also garnered her an Oscar nomination for best screenplay. The comedienne is in the middle of a book tour for her best-seller Instant Mom.
“Now that I'm experiencing motherhood, I'm ready to write the next chapter of my family story,” she said. “Of course a few jaded folks in the press corps will claim I ran out of money or just want to kiss John Corbett again. One of these things is true."
Gold Circle just began production Pitch Perfect 2 while Playtone is in production on the big-screen adaptation of Dave Eggers' novel A Hologram for the King being directed by Tom Tykwer.
CAA repped the producers in the deal.
Vardalos is repped by Resolution, Untitled and attorneys Jon Moonves and Tom Greenberg. Corbett is repped by Gersh and Steve Lovett.
