Game of Thrones: The Mountain vs The Viper

Game of Thrones' next episode promises the series' 'best combat scenes so far', as Prince Oberyn of Dorne prepares to battle Ser Gregor Clegane.

The latest episode of Game of Thrones ended with a glimmer of hope for Peter Dinklage's poor, wrongly accused Tyrion, as Oberyn Martell – the smouldering Dornish Prince known as the Red Viper – promised to act as Tyrion's champion in his trial by combat. This means, of course, that Oberyn will have to engage in a fight to the death against the formidable Ser Gregor Clegane, aka The Mountain that Rides – a man last seen casually slicing people up in the courtyard, possibly for practice, but seemingly just for fun.

Oberyn's agenda is revenge. He knows that Ser Gregor was responsible for the rape and murder of Elia, Oberyn's sister, and the murder of Elia's children (in events set several years before the series opened, during the coup against the Mad King Aerys). The fight is a perfect chance to get even.
Game of Thrones showrunners Dan Weiss and David Benioff have promised fans that the fight itself will be the best hand-to-hand duel the series has yet seen, telling Entertainment Weekly: “It’s not just people hacking at each other with spears and swords. It’s the culmination of 20 years of anger and hatred and thirst for vengeance coming to a head in this amazing set piece."

For season four of the show, the role of Ser Gregor was recast, with Icelandic strongman Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, a 420 pound, 6′ 9″ mass of muscle, stepping into the role. He's the third strongest man in the world, and a former basketball player.

Readers of George RR Martin's books have already speculated that the outcome of the fight may deviate from the novels. But HBO's synopsis of the next episode, The Mountain and the Viper, offers no clues. It reads: "Mole’s Town receives unexpected visitors. Littlefinger’s motives are questioned. Ramsay attempts to prove himself to his father. Tyrion’s fate is decided."

Thrones returns for its eighth episode of the season, “The Mountain and the Viper,” on June 1.
