I was apparently feeling a bit snarky when I made this comment, but I didn’t want to overreact about it, so I didn’t provide an explanation. It's actually 'Cronulla’, not Cornella, named after the suburb and beach in NSW that the 2005 riots between groups of ‘white Australia’s and groups of people of Middle Eastern appearance actually took place in.

I am a first-generation POC living in Australia, and as such, I’m very involved and interested in identity politics here. So to me, personally (not speaking on behalf of other POCs), misnaming the riots is kind of insulting because it indicates a general ignorance of identity and ethnicity politics in contemporary Australia. The event is very closely tied to Australia's xenophobic history and domestic attitudes towards immigration and multiculturalism. The riots are an indication of the sensitivity of Australian attitudes towards ‘aliens’, and it has scary implications for those of us who are not white Australians. Not knowing how to spell it is a WTF thing for me, because the event SHOULD be considered general knowledge for Australians at this point.

In saying that, I don’t begrudge the OP at all. I am well aware that issues that are important to POCs are not seen in the same light by other groups in society. It could just be a general mistake or a typo, and I do agree that Dami Im is an excellent example of the steps Australians as a whole are taking towards acceptance of other races.

to be honest, i didn't see the OP's note and misspelling, so i was confused as to what you were referring to. thank you for the thoughtful and well written reply. i'm an aboriginal australian and aware/sensitive to issues in this country towards anyone who isn't white; seeing 'cornella' made me kinda ????? like what in the fuck. sorry, i hope i'm making sense, i'm a bit hungover.
