MST3K Creator Hints at Online Reboot

Thanks to Mystery Science Theater 3000, laughing at terrible movies has become a pop-culture institution. Now, 15 years after its last cancellation, the series might be revived for a new generation of snarky critics with an "online incarnation." In Wired's recent MST3K oral history, creator and original host Joel Hodgson hints at a possible series update, which would "feature a fresh (and as-yet unannounced) host and cameos from many MST3K alumni."

"I've talked to a bunch of fans about their lives and what MST3K means to them," Hodgson says. "I'm overwhelmed by how people took to that show. It really affected them. I thought if enough people still love it, maybe we can bring it back."

The creator-host then explains why the show, with its gradually shifting cast, has always been "built to be refreshed with new people and new ideas."

"It's like Heisenberg's uncertainty principle as it applies to MST3K: If it doesn't change, it's not the same show. And fortunately for us, as long as there are movies, there are always going to be cheesy movies." (Brace yourself, Tommy Wiseau.)

For the unacquainted, the cult-classic series features a man and his robot accomplices who are held prisoner by an mad scientist and subjected to psychological torture by watching the worst films ever made (including such gems as 1996's Manos: The Hands of Fate). The prisoners offer hilarious commentary on the films as they're aired, cracking jokes at plot holes and suspect acting.

It's a great time to be a fan of terrible films: According to Satellite News, the original series will return in rerun form to Retro TV, starting Saturday, July 5th.

I've been binge-watching all the old episodes on YouTube. My favorite episode is a toss-up between Hobgoblins, Final Sacrifice, or Laserblast.

i remember seeing this show back when comedy central was still called the comedy channel, the country didn't really have a huge cable lineup so i probably saw this on cable in the big city. i think what i saw was them just riffing on shit like those 50s PSA things and newsreels. it was way over 20 years ago and i was like 10 at the time so i don't completely remember.
mana_runigha 26th-Apr-2014 05:59 pm (UTC)
Sounds about right, they used to just spoof on old movies, but focused on Sci-Fi ones when they moved channels
deadendqueen16 26th-Apr-2014 03:23 am (UTC)
Also, this always KILLS me.

I want to point out that MST3K was created by a Minnesotan and aired here first.

Minnesota pride!

I love all of their Midwest jokes. I sometimes wonder if it makes me appreciate the show more.

I've been watching a ton of this show on YouTube lately. Parts: the Clonus Horror will always be my favorite, but Mitchell is also really good.
calliope1975 26th-Apr-2014 05:05 am (UTC)
I remember watching The Island with ScarJo and Ewan McGregor and being all 'this is just parts: the clonus horror you thieves!'
giuliettamasina 26th-Apr-2014 06:46 am (UTC)
That was so flagrant.
diamond_dust06 26th-Apr-2014 01:43 pm (UTC)
When I saw that movie, I thought that it was meant to be a remake of Parts. I didn't know that they'd ripped it off!
mana_runigha 26th-Apr-2014 06:00 pm (UTC)
I believe the Clonus film makers sued and won their case over The Island being plagiarism
raunchyb 26th-Apr-2014 03:47 am (UTC)
I can never decide, but it might be Final Sacrifice. Or Starfighters. Or Girl in Gold Boots... I could keep going.

Out of this World might be my favorite short. Specialty breads!
giuliettamasina 26th-Apr-2014 03:49 am (UTC)
Girl in Gold Boots is a freaking masterpiece. I HAD A PRETTY MIIIIND.
