Suck it, Netflix: HBO signs licensing deal with Amazon Prime

HBO has forged an exclusive long-term licensing deal with Amazon's streaming service Prime Instant Video, making it the exclusive online-only subscription home for hundreds of hours of HBO programming including all episodes of classic series The Sopranos, Deadwood, The Wire and Six Feet Under and movies and miniseries such as John Adams, Band of Brothers and Angels in America.

The first wave of content will arrive on Amazon Prime May 21.

Previous seasons of newer shows including Veep, The Newsroom and Girls will become available approximately three years after airing on HBO.

The deal is a first for HBO as the premium service has kept past episodes of its programming inside the walled universe of HBO on authenticated service HBO Go and its own on-demand platforms.

Interesting move, I guess, but I'm a young twenty-something so I steal all my content instantly anyway so it's not really relevant.
slayer4915 23rd-Apr-2014 02:13 pm (UTC)
Calling the FBI right now, tbh
bossm 23rd-Apr-2014 02:18 pm (UTC)
A friend of mine has a contract with lovefilm. She gets 4 free movies a month. My first question was immediately why she doesn't stream like everyone else does.
theantipoet 23rd-Apr-2014 02:38 pm (UTC)
I download a lot too tbh, but if I have the option, I generally prefer the legal streaming sites.

it's nice to be able to pause a show in one room and resume it in another (or, hell -- resume it in my boyfriend's living room 20 miles away) without having to FF back to where I left off.
childish 23rd-Apr-2014 02:39 pm (UTC)
I don't live in the US so it's never a real option lol
unique_lilpixie 23rd-Apr-2014 03:43 pm (UTC)
ia, I try to stream legally first, but if the network sites don't have the show available, or become like History Channel and decide this season to make me pay to watch Vikings, I will go elsewhere for my shows.
frelling_tralk 23rd-Apr-2014 04:46 pm (UTC)
Yeah I only illegally d/l for the very latest US episodes which are otherwise impossible for me to see here, otherwise I prefer legal streaming. I just get lazy these days when it comes to searching for links tbh :P
dbwayfarer 24th-Apr-2014 09:45 pm (UTC)
Yeah, same. I have trouble sitting through a whole movie at once, so it's nice to be able to pick it up again whenever (and wherever - I love streaming on my tablet while I'm doing spinning or in the kitchen cooking or something).

I also really like just browsing Amazon or Netflix and stumbling on something I'd never heard of before.
misscrystal 23rd-Apr-2014 03:41 pm (UTC)
I stream everything, too, but I always check Amazon and Netflix first because it's less hassle than searching streaming sites for links that might be dead, slow, and are never HD.
knighthowl82 23rd-Apr-2014 02:10 pm (UTC)
I guess I will renew my prime.
radar 23rd-Apr-2014 02:10 pm (UTC)
amazon prime is the worst though. idg why people hate on Netflix, the system is so much more simple and efficient.

amazon prime's set up is awful. ugh this sucks.
funk2funky 23rd-Apr-2014 02:13 pm (UTC)
It's so hard to browse.
bossm 23rd-Apr-2014 02:16 pm (UTC)
Really? It's extremely easy.
radar 23rd-Apr-2014 02:19 pm (UTC)
I'm not saying it's rocket science. I just don't like the way its setup, with the video screen on top of all the other episodes and the placement of the playback options.
littlelistmaker 23rd-Apr-2014 02:17 pm (UTC)
Yeah I have it for the 2 day shipping but I really hate trying to find anything on it or watch anything on it. I hate that your watching choices are like tiny thing in your tab or a whole new window.
luvthatdrtywata 23rd-Apr-2014 02:17 pm (UTC)
neither are perfect but ia netflix is definitely better. but i also find netflix hides the new releases from me and it takes me forever to find them. i know i have fairly niche tastes when it comes to movies but it always recommends the same things i don't have any interest in watching.
wickedmynx 23rd-Apr-2014 02:17 pm (UTC)
IT's really crappy honestly I don't get the fuss. Netflix spoiled me.
cutiepie0304 23rd-Apr-2014 02:20 pm (UTC)
aria_grace 23rd-Apr-2014 02:20 pm (UTC)
The app is super easy to use. Are you using their website?
quiet_storm 23rd-Apr-2014 02:30 pm (UTC)
I like how netflix just plays until you want it to stop lol.
missingalphabet 23rd-Apr-2014 02:30 pm (UTC)
Yes, I agree so fucking much. I can't even watch it on Linux anymore because of the shitfest going on with Flash. Which, okay, fine, I usually watch my stuff on my PS3 and the web interface is so awful, but damn, THE PS3 INTERFACE IS AWFUL, TOO.

And it isn't even on Android. Ugh, fuck Amazon Video.
diamond_dust06 23rd-Apr-2014 02:33 pm (UTC)
Prime's biggest problem is that it doesn't have closed captions. That's some bullshit.
orlemente 23rd-Apr-2014 02:37 pm (UTC)
I Use the app and it's so much easier!
celtic_thistle 23rd-Apr-2014 02:37 pm (UTC)
I have the student version of Prime rn and I'll probably buy Prime for the $49 soon. There's an app for XBOX One so I'll just use that for streaming tbh
ivannafierce 23rd-Apr-2014 02:46 pm (UTC)
Most people who use Amazon Prime are computer literate though.
missedith17 23rd-Apr-2014 02:55 pm (UTC)
I like prime a lot more now that it has some different content from netflix but they need to fix their fucking browser. That is the reason why I don't use it very frequently.
klmnumbers 23rd-Apr-2014 03:11 pm (UTC)
Yeah it's so unwieldy. And can you even queue it up to just keep playing episodes? I'm too lazy to get up and press next episode.
megalixer 23rd-Apr-2014 03:50 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I get Prime for the free two-day shipping (that rarely ever seems to actually be two-day anymore) but I almost never watch movies on their service even though they actually seem to have a reasonably good selection these days. The layout is shitty and their player takes forever to load HD, I can practically torrent a movie in 1080 for as long as it takes to buffer "720" lol
sporkitout 23rd-Apr-2014 03:50 pm (UTC)
I hate how the shows aren't grouped? Like how I can't go under Buffy like on Netflix. No, it's Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season 1, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season 2. Also that it doesn't instant play the next episode. My xbox remote always turns off on auto right before the next episode.

First world problems, tbh.
pinkjaffa 23rd-Apr-2014 04:51 pm (UTC)
I definitely prefer Netflix because I haven't found a good way to sideload Prime on my Ouya. It's much easier to just be able to have the content on my TV instead of my laptop
xathenex 23rd-Apr-2014 06:06 pm (UTC)
Yes, and the fact that it doesn't work on my android tablet pisses me off to no end.
dbwayfarer 24th-Apr-2014 09:45 pm (UTC)
My main complaint with them is that their PS3 interface is really laggy (even just simple navigation before even hitting play is like hnnnnnnnnng) and I get way more stuttering on PS3 than on other devices. Fix that shit.

narcoticaddict 23rd-Apr-2014 02:11 pm (UTC)
I would maybe care if Game of Thrones was included.

Besides, I'm fucking over Amazon after they raised their rate to $99 a year.
alaynestone 23rd-Apr-2014 02:12 pm (UTC)
$99 is on par with what Netflix costs per year, and you get free 2-day shipping on top of that.

Totally worth it, tbh.
gravity1318 23rd-Apr-2014 04:55 pm (UTC)
I order so much shit from amazon that the membership pays for itself in shipping costs within like... 3 months of renewing. Last year, my bf got a set of those bowflex adjustable weights. That weighed pver 100lbs, and the shipping was free. TOTALLY worth it.
childish 23rd-Apr-2014 02:14 pm (UTC)
In Canada it's $79 for a shittier, reduced-content Amazon with no streaming lol
gee 23rd-Apr-2014 02:14 pm (UTC)
$99 is still a damn sweet deal. Unless you are only ordering like 4 things a year and have no friends or family to give your share benefits to.
luvthatdrtywata 23rd-Apr-2014 02:15 pm (UTC)
they have deals sometimes. i got my first year free with my student email and at xmas they had 50% off so i paid $49 for the year.
celestinaketzia 23rd-Apr-2014 02:17 pm (UTC)
Mte. I've been wanting to watch it but don't own a tv subscription. Was hoping it would come to Netflix. I've already received a copyright infringement notice from my isp for visiting project free tv, so I'm scared to find it online.
illusivevenstar 23rd-Apr-2014 03:19 pm (UTC)
It's right around the price for what you're paying for netflix per year. And free two day shipping. I think it's worth it.
manu19 23rd-Apr-2014 03:39 pm (UTC)
its 25 in Germany with 1 day free delivery xD granted the video content isnt as great but thats a huge gap
misscrystal 23rd-Apr-2014 04:00 pm (UTC)
I have the student version so I paid $39 every year but it's being raised to $49. Still worth it.
wishfulsinfulx 23rd-Apr-2014 02:11 pm (UTC)
alaynestone 23rd-Apr-2014 02:11 pm (UTC)
I wonder how much Amazon had to pay for this.
gee 23rd-Apr-2014 02:11 pm (UTC)
"approximately three years after airing on HBO" lol ok
phallus 23rd-Apr-2014 02:12 pm (UTC)
lol I didn't even catch that! not even worth it.
alaynestone 23rd-Apr-2014 02:13 pm (UTC)
But you get The Sopranos, The Wire, SFU, etc instantly!
gee 23rd-Apr-2014 02:15 pm (UTC)
Instantly but not free, which I already got. Sorry amazon.
arcticmonkeys 23rd-Apr-2014 02:25 pm (UTC)
mte lmao no thanks
catnipped_mind 23rd-Apr-2014 02:40 pm (UTC)
lol mte

LOL What a joke
marywebgirl 23rd-Apr-2014 03:15 pm (UTC)
I was ready to give them credit for finally not being dipshits, but then I got to that part.
onyxobsidian 23rd-Apr-2014 03:25 pm (UTC)
and STILL no Sex and the City?
hope_remains 23rd-Apr-2014 05:20 pm (UTC)
lol EXACTLY. and they wonder why people pirate.

"hey what did you think of game of thrones last night?"
"idk I'll tell you my thoughts in three years"
xathenex 23rd-Apr-2014 06:07 pm (UTC)
Seriously, what is even the point.
phallus 23rd-Apr-2014 02:12 pm (UTC)
This means nothing to people who stream shit anyway. But yay for Amazon Prime users!
orlemente 23rd-Apr-2014 02:12 pm (UTC)
wickedmynx 23rd-Apr-2014 02:14 pm (UTC)
Oprah help me if they put up their Documentaries too. I will marathon the fuck outta them.
heure_actuelle 23rd-Apr-2014 02:22 pm (UTC)
yesss. i just recently watched There's Something Wrong with Aunt Diane and the one about the home invasion in Connecticut. I need to find a way to watch more
wickedmynx 23rd-Apr-2014 02:26 pm (UTC)
You should watch Valentine Road. It's well made but you will be left incredibly pissed off. I was fuming for days after watching it.

I think The Stairwell/The Stairwell 2 is also an HBO doc, it's also good.
buffyx 23rd-Apr-2014 03:40 pm (UTC)
I saw There's Something Wrong With Aunt Diane years ago and I still think about it.
gorgogliare 23rd-Apr-2014 02:14 pm (UTC)
This is really exciting!!! Although obviously I wish GoT were included. As a student I really like Amazon Prime.
luvthatdrtywata 23rd-Apr-2014 02:14 pm (UTC)
yay! i've been waiting for the wire to stream somewhere. does it really life up to the hype?
alaynestone 23rd-Apr-2014 02:16 pm (UTC)
radar 23rd-Apr-2014 02:16 pm (UTC)
it was so hard for me to get through a single season of that show but now that it's going up for easier access streaming i'll probably continue it.
missingalphabet 23rd-Apr-2014 02:32 pm (UTC)
Yes, every season is better than the last except Season 5 but that's because Season 4 set the bar sky high.

I was just going to say. Streaming it on random sites, I wasn't really hooked. I feel like if I could watch it through our Xbox One it'll be easier to pay attention idk
lovefifteen 23rd-Apr-2014 02:55 pm (UTC)
it's not really an immediate "hook" kind of show tbh

it's very in medias res and you have to work to figure out what they're saying (police and gangsters)...it's a lot like generation kill in that way. stick with it tho, i didn't really get hooked until like ep 8 or 9 of s1. the first half of seasons is always slow bc they lay all the groundwork for the pieces to come together at the end
nathanandbarry 23rd-Apr-2014 04:03 pm (UTC)
Yes. It's slow but worth it. It's so intricately made. They put a lot of thought and research into it and it shows.
nene718 23rd-Apr-2014 04:04 pm (UTC)
yes but it's not the kind of show that gets you hooked immediately so you have to stick with it
rlmoonyk 23rd-Apr-2014 04:32 pm (UTC)
yes it does. Easily the best tv show I've seen and I've watched a lot of critics' darling shows.
knighthowl82 23rd-Apr-2014 02:17 pm (UTC)
My brother got a kindle yesterday and I didn't know you could download amazon prime shows and movies for offline viewing. Def thinking about getting one now.
disclosure 23rd-Apr-2014 02:40 pm (UTC)
Omg I didn't know that either... For free?

Or is it only on a kindle? Can I not do it on my iPad?

Edited at 2014-04-23 02:41 pm (UTC)
knighthowl82 23rd-Apr-2014 02:42 pm (UTC)
Sadly only on the kindle. I wish I could on my ipad
dumpyfledgling 23rd-Apr-2014 06:38 pm (UTC)
Only on the Kindle and it only stays on for 30 days.

Amazon Prime will remain a joke until they get it together and add their app to Apple TV. Can't even mirror from my phone using their shitty app, and everything lags when I mirror it from my laptop.

Netflix >>>>>>>

Edited at 2014-04-23 02:21 pm (UTC)
yeah_banana 23rd-Apr-2014 02:43 pm (UTC)
i use mirroring on my phone all the time and i've never had an issue. it actually works better than the prime app on my tv. but i do wish they would just make it easier and get an apple tv app.
cutiepie0304 23rd-Apr-2014 02:47 pm (UTC)
oh damn, they must've changed it since I last tried. I was always getting errors before. I'll have to check it again when I get home :)
misscrystal 23rd-Apr-2014 04:05 pm (UTC)
Is using an HD out not an option on your comp?
