Neil Patrick Harris was so serious about transforming into a transgender punk rock singer in Broadway's Hedwig and the Angry Inch that he went way beyond wearing make-up, miniskirts and fishnet stockings.

'I've lost 20 pounds almost for the role to try and be more feminine which sort of changed my whole posture,' Harris said in an interview with ABC's Good Morning America which aired today.

Harris, his cheekbones sunken in, described himself as 'Jared Leto manorexic.'

Leto famously lost 40 pounds for his Oscar winning performance as a transgender woman suffering from AIDS in Dallas Buyers Club.

Harris says: 'Every time I eat like half a sandwich, I'm like "How about just one chip" and I eat the chip and I'm like "Oh my God, what have I done? I'm so fat!"'

The show officially opens on 22 April at the Belasco Theatre.

Harris just completed a nine-season run on the CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother. Hedwig is the actor's first appearance on Broadway since 2004's Tony-winning revival of Assassins. His other Broadway credits include Proof and Cabaret.
