ONTD Original: Top 10 Highest Grossing Female Tours of All Time (Updated)

Since Beyoncé just ended her world tour and she entered the top 10 and joined the very elite group of female touring forces I thought I'd post an updated list of the top 10 highest grossing female tours of all time, based on actual gross.

1. Madonna - Sticky & Sweet: $ 407,713,266

Number of shows: 85
Average attendance: 41,716

The Sticky & Sweet Tour broke many records in terms of its ticket sales, commercial gross and audience attendance. On September 11, 2008, Madonna performed to a sell-out crowd of over 74,000 fans and grossed over $12 million USD, surpassing all previous grosses at both the old and the new Wembley Stadiums.

2. Madonna - MDNA: $ 305,158,362

Number of shows: 88
Average attendance: 25,140

Following the tickets sale opening, the tour created immense success at the box office and many venues were sold out. In Tel Aviv, 33,000 tickets for the first show at Ramat Gan Stadium were selling fast in the months previous to the premiere. Madonna's first ever show in Abu Dhabi had fans lined up in front of the Virgin Megastore for tickets of 24 hours before they went on general sale. All initial 22,000 tickets sold out in record-breaking one hour, prompting the promoter to add the second date there, which in turn sold out within a week. In Turkey, 47,000 tickets for the show in Istanbul sold out in four days. In the United States, 60,000 tickets for a show in Yankee Stadium, New York City sold out in 20 minutes, prompting Live Nation to add a second date. Tickets for the show at Sprint Center in Kansas City sold out in 12 minutes, while the show in Houston sold out in less than an hour. In Canada, the concert at the Bell Centre sold 16,000 tickets in 20 minutes, along with the show at the Plains of Abraham, selling 65,000 tickets in one hour. In Ottawa, 15,000 tickets for the show in Scotiabank Place sold out in 21 minutes, becoming the fastest-selling concert in the arena's 16-year history, beating out previous record holder AC/DC in 2009. All available tickets for Madonna's first date in Amsterdam sold out in 30 minutes, prompting Live Nation once again to add a second date.Madonna also sold more than 100,000 tickets in two days for three shows in Brazil.

3. Celine Dion - Taking Chances: $ 279,212,643

Number of shows: 132
Average attendance: 19,696

Céline Dion set a record in the history of Canadian concerts, when she sold out all her Montreal shows in only a few minutes. After further shows being added, bringing the total to 11, Montreal's audience (with 20,995 in attendance at each show) became the largest on the tour with 227,616 spectators for a single city. Dion performed in Bell Centre 31 times since 1996. Other Canadian concerts were sold out immediately, prompting second dates to be added in Edmonton, Vancouver and Winnipeg, and a third show added in Toronto. In the United States, second dates were announced in New York City, Uniondale, Boston, and Newark. In Ireland 64,000 tickets for her Dublin concert, the largest single concert of the scheduled tour, were sold out in 3 hours.

4. Lady Gaga - The Monster Ball: $ 227,400,000

Number of shows: 201
Average attendance: 12,438

The Monster Ball Tour was the second worldwide concert tour by American recording artist Lady Gaga. Staged in support of her album The Fame Monster (2009) and comprising a set list of songs from that and her debut album The Fame (2008), the tour visited arenas and stadiums from 2009 through 2011. Described as "the first-ever pop electro opera" by Gaga, the tour was announced in October 2009 after an intended joint concert tour with hip-hop artist Kanye West was suddenly canceled. The Monster Ball Tour commenced four days after the release of The Fame Monster in November 2009.

5. Beyoncé - The Mrs. Carter Show: $ 224,284,820

Number of shows: 132
Average attendance: 15,724

The tour placed at number 2 on Pollstar's year-end Top 20 Worldwide Tours list, grossing $188.6 million from the first 107 shows. This made The Mrs. Carter Show World Tour the highest grossing female tour of 2013, Beyoncé's highest grossing tour to date and one of the highest grossing tours of all time.

6. Cher - Living Proof: The Farewell Tour: $ 220,623,920

Number of shows: 326
Average attendance: 10,800

Due to the popularity of the tour, Cher decided to extend it by 100 more shows in North America then, after the tour concluded in 2004, she announced plans of playing in Europe, Oceania and Asia to play in territories she either had never been to or had not played for a long time. The final show took place at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles after a record-breaking 326 dates.

7. Madonna - Confessions: $ 194,754,447

Number of shows: 60
Average attendance: 20,171

According to Billboard and tour producer Arthur Fogel, the tour grossed over US $194.7 million ($227,771,360 in 2014 dollars) from 60 shows and 1.2 million audience, becoming highest grossing tour ever for a female artist and breaking the record previously held by Cher for her Living Proof: The Farewell Tour (2002–2005). Madonna broke her own record in 2008, with her Sticky & Sweet Tour, which became the highest grossing tour by a solo artist, earning US $408 million ($448,502,559 in 2014 dollars.

8. Lady Gaga - Born This Way Ball: $ 181,100,000

Number of shows: 98
Average attendance: 19,334

Despite the worldwide commercial success of the tour, it was not very well received by the South American market. In Colombia, some tickets were sold at half of their original price to increase ticket sales. This generated a wide criticism from fans who bought tickets at the original price; the production company also made an offer to fans who bought tickets at their original price, so they could get another free ticket in the same location and a price adjusted refund, or a full refund. To increase ticket sales of the three concerts in Brazil, special offers were made, one of to include a two for one in some stand locations. In Chile, ticket sales were higher than in the rest of the South American countries. However, the show wasn’t able to sell all the locations immediately, and the production company for the concert had to make special offers 2 weeks before the show to sell more tickets. The tour was later cancelled due to Gaga's hip injury.

9. P!nk - The Truth About Love: $ 170,600,000

Number of shows: 142
Average attendance: 13,924

The Truth About Love Tour was the sixth concert tour by American recording artist Pink. Sponsored by CoverGirl and showcasing music from her her sixth studio album The Truth About Love (2012), the tour played over 140 shows in Australia, Europe and North America. Shows in Melbourne, Australia were recorded and released on a concert DVD, "The Truth About Love Tour: Live from Melbourne"

10. P!nk - Funhouse / Summer Carnival: $ 149,278,271

Number of shows: 185
Average attendance: 16,216

The tour marked the first time Pink has headlined a North American arena tour. To describe the event, Pink stated, "I've waited 30 years for this tour. I really wasn't sure if anyone was going to show [up]."

say what you want, but madonna is the best female live performer in pop music.

yes, beyonce is the best technical performer, but madonna and her shows have that something you can't put your finger on.

xadyx 16th-Apr-2014 07:13 pm (UTC)
This performance and this version of erotica are so EPIC
earcondom 16th-Apr-2014 07:16 pm (UTC)
the confessions tour is magnificent. it was the first pop concert I watched and I was taken aback by the messages and theatrics -- it sold me on madonna.

it's also a very cohesive show. it's very minimalistic and modern in its presentation -- it just flows seamlessly together much like the album.

i could go on and on about the confessions era and how flawless it was.

so understated and so amazing. i love this version of erotica.

confessions tour is one of my absolute faves.
scheisse 16th-Apr-2014 07:23 pm (UTC)
well i mean, the numbers prove this as a fact. bey's been around for nearly two decades and she's just now grossing over $200m. meanwhile, madge is at, what, $1b?
neverhft 16th-Apr-2014 07:37 pm (UTC)
As the biggest Bey fan here on ONTD, I have to agree. And this is hard because I love Bey, but there is something absolutely magical about Madonna, when she puts on her best possible performance. And thank you for posting that video, its incredible. Also another thing I noticed about Madonna is that she has the best tour remixes, a lot of them are just as good if not better than the original cuts!

juanitatequila 16th-Apr-2014 07:39 pm (UTC)
this is the only version of erotica i will listen to

Confessions is my favorite right after Blond Ambition Tour

whatyawaiting4 16th-Apr-2014 08:15 pm (UTC)
This performance is everything I ever want from Madonna. The mix is superb, she sounds on point and THE CHOREO?! The dancing in this is so simple and elegant and just beautiful to watch.
vanilla_09 16th-Apr-2014 08:59 pm (UTC)
i loooove this version of erotica. The like a virgin remake is soo good too.
vanishingbee 16th-Apr-2014 09:54 pm (UTC)
Idk I didn't think she was that great when o saw her for MDNA. The problem was mostly the crowd, though.
momentsofgold 16th-Apr-2014 10:31 pm (UTC)
random story about this video lol. i was driving with my friend the other day and she's a huge madonna fan and is in the process of converting me (less converting, more making sure i see everything) and the audio for this came on and she told me i needed to see the video. i pulled it up on my phone, and she was trying to watch as she was driving but it didn't work. so we literally pulled off the freeway and to the side of the road to watch this video. so worth it.
ponpiri 17th-Apr-2014 12:10 am (UTC)
She is not the best performer. I would say that her set designs and concepts are some of the best, though.
chilli_cheese 16th-Apr-2014 07:14 pm (UTC)
wow at madonna slaying with so few dates.
lr489 16th-Apr-2014 07:18 pm (UTC)

thecanuckian 16th-Apr-2014 07:22 pm (UTC)
P!nk taking her rightful place with the LEGENDS of music!!!!
scheisse 16th-Apr-2014 07:22 pm (UTC)
Lmao at that bullshit description of the BTW Ball. Y'all still try to downplay its success despite it being on the "highest-grossing of all" time list. Bye @ you, OP.

Gaga and Pink slaying with two tours on the list and Madge with three. Queens! Imagine Madge's grosses if she did an extended (for her) tour of like, 150 dates.

lloyd_llewellyn 16th-Apr-2014 07:33 pm (UTC)
beyonce is not as legendary as everyone claims she is. she's never been as universally loved, influential and polarizing as someone like madonna. nor did her record sales ever match madonna's numbers. the fact that lady gaga earned more money in her first two years as a touring artist speaks volumes.
davetvs 16th-Apr-2014 10:13 pm (UTC)
everybody except the beyhive knows beyonce is all hype
sunshine2163 16th-Apr-2014 10:33 pm (UTC)
As a black entertainer, yes she is. Y'all seem to forget that Bey may do pop songs but her albums are always more R&B based. And for her to have come as far as she has, that is big. And the fact that Gaga has been selling this gimmick that the whole world has sucked into, may not be selling so well now.
kairoso 16th-Apr-2014 07:43 pm (UTC)
the fame era gaga was really something. i hope gaga finds whatever can bring her career up again. and i mean in terms of the music she's making, single choices etc
funhouse 16th-Apr-2014 08:18 pm (UTC)
right? imagine the gross of her tours if she went to japan and asia too
lady_gaga 16th-Apr-2014 08:49 pm (UTC)
its ridic

The tour was cancelled and still made almost 200 million

I mean
sonadoras456 16th-Apr-2014 09:36 pm (UTC)
I was getting ready to say..like..look at the damn numbers..who gives a fuck if it wasn't well received by the South American market?
