Five Actors Ready to Bring Netflix's Daredevil to Life

With the start date for production on Netflix's upcoming "Daredevil" series fast approaching, speculation as to which actor will bring the hero of Hell's Kitchen to life has started to heat up. Leading the pack has to be Michael C. Hall; the former star of Showtime's "Dexter" has been singled out as the rumored favorite to play Matt Murdock.

OK, fine -- there's no denying that those rumors are more than a little bit perfect. In his work on shows like "Six Feet Under" and "Dexter," Hall has displayed pretty much every trait necessary for making Murdock work on the small screen. Plus, the guy's already interested, and he has the award-winning/critical darling pedigree that Marvel's attracted to when it comes to casting super hero roles. Honestly, this might just be the crime fighter Hall was born to play.

"Don't misunderstand, I would definitely consider it -- but I can't tell you any inside information, because I think they're nothing but rumors." And while we agree, he'd make a fantastic hero, Hall isn't the only guy with the necessary chops to bring ol' hornhead to life. Here are a few other actors that could also swing through Manhattan's darkened alleys.

Mahershala Ali
As Remy Danton on Netflix's "House of Cards," Ali packs in a wide range of emotion into every line he delivers; he's simultaneously intimidating, calculating, cocky, and charming all at once. And considering that, unlike a lot of Marvel heroes, Daredevil's been both extremely serious and extremely funny over the past 50 years, the series needs an actor that can swing from one extreme to the other, sometimes with a few other emotions tucked under his arm as well. Bottom line is, Ali's got the goods and is an actor we could see really nailing every courtroom scene, too.

Chris O'Dowd
A dark horse candidate for sure, and not just because the guy's already appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Jane Foster's date-gone-wrong in "Thor: The Dark World." But why let a bit part get in the way of a real starring role? This Irish actor would definitely bring a lighter touch to the Irish-American super hero, a touch that would feel right in line with some of the more happy-go-lucky aspects of Mark Waid's recent run with the character. And like all great comedians, we don't doubt that O'Dowd would be able to reach the level of sadness required when playing Marvel's most put-upon hero.

This might be even dark horsier than O'Dowd, but Plemons has proved himself to be an endlessly fascinating actor in every serialized role he's taken on. He played the often overlooked best friend on "Friday Night Lights," where his natural delivery and excellent comedic timing made him one of the show's most relatable characters. Then, Plemons did a total turnaround on "Breaking Bad," as he pushed all of his everyman characteristics into straight-up psychopath territory. The guy's got the necessary range the portray Daredevil, and -- this is incredibly important for some fans -- he's got the right hair color.

James Wolk
Wolk's profile has risen slightly thanks to a leading role in the CBS sitcom "The Crazy Ones," but most TV aficionados know him as the mysterious Bob Benson on "Mad Men." In that role, Wolk proved he can pull off playing an effortlessly charming and captivating character, one that has a level of menacing mystery lurking just under the surface. Plus, the guy's not hard to look at, which seems like a pre-requisite for the character when you consider Matt Murdock's active -- albeit tragic -- love life.

I'm going with the dark horse.

I love Chris O'Dowd and after some of the scenes in Calvary I would love to see him do more serious stuff but unless Daredevil is going to be from Roscommon in this continuity...

I'm kinda hoping a lot of the future television characters end up in the movies. I can't imagine them not using Daredevil in Avengers 3.

The actor that played Todd will never NOT be annoying in anything I see him in thanks to Breaking Bad.
milkradio 16th-Apr-2014 02:43 pm (UTC)
I just finished season of Friday Night Lights and I still see that actor as Todd and not ~loveably goof Landry~. People keep telling me he's a fun character (though I've been warned for a dumb plotline in season 2 apparently...), but I'm still expecting him to run over a puppy for laughs tbh.
leitao 17th-Apr-2014 04:53 am (UTC)
Every time I see his face, all I can think of is the Breaking Bad commenters who called him "Meth Damon," lmao~
tw_31988 Please, i'd take James Wolk in anything.16th-Apr-2014 02:11 pm (UTC)
dull_and_wicked 16th-Apr-2014 02:12 pm (UTC)
omg keep chris o'dowd away from matt murdock PLEASE
greenfairy_87 16th-Apr-2014 02:40 pm (UTC)
I know Chris Evans has Cap on lock but I think he could totally pull off Matt imo it's like he was born to play Marvel heroes.
