Eva Mendes talks fashion and why she hates skinny jeans with Flare magazine

ON WHY SHE HATES SKINNY JEANS:
“I’m always in dresses, in skirts—I think they’re so easy. People are always saying, ‘I love jeans, they’re so casual and easy,’ but I think jeans aren’t easy. They’re my worst nightmare.”

ON WEARING BODY-CON:
“It’s not that I’m against body-conscious clothes: I have worn them on the red carpet or out, but when I’m photographed in them, I always regret it. For me, it’s always been the easy way out. When I wear something a little more revealing, I think, Oh, gosh, I should have been more creative… [And] I don’t like when it’s just me and I’m not working. I don’t like feeling like I’m on display… [But] my mother always says she wants to see me in more fitted things! She’s always saying, ‘Show off your body, it’s not always going to be like this!’”

ON HER MOTHER’S RED-CARPET CRITIQUES:
“She’s usually on the money. If she doesn’t like something, I can usually see why: it didn’t photograph well or looked weird around the waist.”

ON CHOOSING WHAT TO WEAR:
“It’s an important part of my day, what I choose to wear and put out there in the world. I also have to remember that I probably will be photographed at the gas pump.”

ON HER SHOPPING M.O.:
“When I go shopping, I know what I’m looking for. I have this thing that takes over. Honestly, I don’t find it as fun with friends because I don’t like to talk when I’m on the hunt.”

ON HER FAVOURITE FILM ACTRESSES:
“[When I was young,] I’d choose the film based on the women who spoke to me on the cover. I remember being drawn to those women. They were so exotic, darker, with larger features, bigger noses. Maybe it was because I could identify with them more than the stars who were popular. Twenty years ago, I’m not sure that there were many popular stars who looked like that.”

ON HER SEXY TEEN STAGE:
“When I was 15, nothing could be short enough. I had to have those little shorts, those little crop tops.”

ON HER FAVOURITE RED-CARPET DRESS OF ALL TIME, THE RED GUCCI SHE WORE TO THE 2011 TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL PREMIERE OF LAST NIGHT:
“I usually stay away from red because it can be too va-va-voom and too much of a statement. But because this was chiffon, it just felt so right. It was an orangey kind of red, and it had long sleeves, went to the floor and had a high neck. I could live in a dress like that. It’s just so comfortable and romantic, and more indicative of my real style.”

ON HER LOVE OF HEAD-WRAPS:
“They’re an easy way for me to feel pulled together, even when I’m not. Some kind of scarf or a mini-turban situation. That finishes a not-so-great outfit and polishes up the look a bit.”

ON WORKING WITH MIUCCIA PRADA ON HER PLACE BEYOND THE PINES PREMIERE DRESS:
“Ms. Prada wanted my input. The dress felt really ladylike. We came up with something really sweet, simple and elegant, colourful and easy.”
