One Direction are a band of rich young men, that much is indisputable. In 2013 reports suggested that Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik were worth around £25 million between them and it’s expected that the figure will more than double by the end of this year.
However, as much cash as the boys are making, it seems as though someone else behind the scenes is making much, much more as it’s been claimed that the lads only earned £53,000 each from their first single What Makes You Beautiful, despite selling five million copies.
The team at WhatTheArtistGot.com claims that the single earned £4 million but the band’s expenses were extortionate and by the time they paid producers, managers, record labels, bank fees and VAT the revenue earned by the singers was just a fraction of the gross figure.
Things were even worse when it came to the release of the Ed Sheeran track Little Things. It’s reported that the stars made just £5,000 each for that song and slightly less for their recent tune The Story Of My Life.
Best Song Ever earned the crooners less than £4,000 each, it’s reported. Which is really rather dire.
Figures are based on the amount of digital copies of a song that were sold and the website team claim that they consulted with industry experts to determine the profits earned by artists.
If the numbers are correct, then its no wonder the One Direction lads are heading out on tour so much. Concerts and gigs are known to be massive earners, especially with the crazy ticket prices the X Factor stars can demand.
It’s also not surprising that the hunks are demanding the chance to write more of their own material for every album they put out. The artists could almost double the money they make per single, if they pen the tunes themselves.
Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson met with American rock band The Good Charlotte recently to work on new material for their fourth album, while Harry Styles collaborated with Irish band Kodaline.
Zayn Malik has been working with Naughty Boy and Emeli Sande on a number of new songs and rap numbers, while Niall Horan met with McFly for a few jamming sessions last month.
Still, while we bet the boys aren’t complaining about the money they’re making, Simon Cowell must be rubbing his hands with glee.
His record label reportedly earned £2.4 million from What Makes You Beautiful. That is one sweet deal!
