#IWokeUpLikeThis: Miranda Kerr Reveals the Strategies Behind Her Morning Routine

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
For most of us, the act of getting ready for the world each morning is a blurry-eyed, caffeine-fueled affair—hardly what you’d called chic—and yet there are stylish women who make the whole thing appear so easy. Each day this week, we’ll ask one of them to reveal the secrets to their a.m. routines, starting with model Miranda Kerr. Here, her tricks to waking up on the right side of the bed on a regular basis, from starting the day with a glass of warm water and lemon to the importance of cuddles and lymphatic drainage.

What is the very first thing that you do when you wake up?
Give my son a cuddle and make breakfast together.

Early bird or night owl?
I try to get to bed at a reasonable hour but it doesn’t always happen. I would have to say that I’m naturally a night owl but since having my son, I’ve learned to get to bed earlier. I incorporate little rituals like a nighttime meditation, lighting candles, and misting my face and pillow with my Kora Organics Calming Lavender Mist the evening before. I set my alarm depending on what I have planned for the next day, but I am usually woken quite early by my beautiful little boy.

What is your morning beauty regime?
Being a busy mom, I try to keep it simple. Before showering, I dry body brush—this aids circulation and lymphatic drainage and it’s also a great way to exfoliate my body.

My skincare routine is basic but really effective. I cleanse, tone, and moisturize using Kora Organics Foaming Cleanser, Energizing Citrus Mist, and the Hydrating Day and Night Cream. Then I apply Kora Organics Tinted Day Cream, which has a natural SPF and gives a radiant complexion; put on some lip balm; curl my lashes; and do a light coat of mascara.

Every second day, I wash my hair using Clear Total Care shampoo and conditioner. Its rich blend of vitamins and nutrients nourish the scalp and hair.

What do you do to prepare mentally for the day—any meditation or physical exercises?
I have a chakra morning meditation that I like to practice, it’s designed so you can begin your day with a bright, positive energy frequency and surround yourself with healing light. I also like to do at least 20 minutes of exercise; generally it’s yoga or Pilates.

When it comes to deciding what to wear in the morning, do you plan ahead?
My fashion changes depending on my mood and where I’m going. If it’s a play date with Flynn, you’ll find me in flats and jeans; for a business meeting I like to dress more feminine and conservative. If I have an important business meeting, I plan my outfit the evening before so I know in the morning what I’m wearing and what I feel confident in. This prevents any last-minute stress so I can focus on the meeting and day ahead. I don’t take seasonal trends too literally. I like to take a key statement piece and build around it. I also love accessories.

What is your breakfast of choice?
It changes daily, but often includes starting with a glass of warm water with half a freshly squeezed lemon. I then like to have a cold-pressed organic green juice. After that I have avocado either on gluten-free toast or with organic free-range eggs.

For maximum energy and vitality I make a green power smoothie that is alkalizing and high in vitamins and minerals. Typically my own recipe is this:
The water from a young fresh coconut, half a glass of goat or almond milk, 1 tablespoon acai powder, 1 tablespoon goji berries, 1 tablespoon spirulina, 1 tablespoon raw cacao powder, 1 tablespoon maca powder, 1 tablespoon chia seeds, 1 tablespoon raw vegan protein powder, and 1 tablespoon of coconut oil.

littlehayzay 7th-Apr-2014 04:59 pm (UTC)
It is awesome - it's weird at first but once you consistently do it you notice the difference a tonne
treegrowth 7th-Apr-2014 05:01 pm (UTC)
it's awesome! i do it every day and i believe it had a hand in curing my horrible kp. also it feels really nice and only takes 1-2 minutes :)
theactualworst 7th-Apr-2014 05:03 pm (UTC)
What do you do?
pippopippo 7th-Apr-2014 05:05 pm (UTC)
I have kp too, and I'm really curious—how does it work?
anchellada 7th-Apr-2014 05:19 pm (UTC)
what is it?
georgie_georgie 7th-Apr-2014 05:21 pm (UTC)
is there a special type of brush?
to_pandiculate 7th-Apr-2014 05:50 pm (UTC)
could you elaborate? my kp is so bad and im sooo self concious
concrete_random 7th-Apr-2014 07:07 pm (UTC)
It's awesome! The Body Shop has two different types of brushes that I've used and really enjoy--one has a long handle, one has a knob on the back that you grip. Basically you brush your body is big circles towards your heart; I start at the feet and do both legs, then arms, stomach, back, etc. Keep it away from any open wounds/acne, as the brushing can make it worse.
bitchbynature DON'T DRY BRUSH.9th-Apr-2014 01:38 pm (UTC)
If you are prone to this type of thing, IT WILL GIVE YOU SPIDER VEINS (even if you do it gently, because the fibers are naturally dense). Not fucking worth it. I dry brushed for a few months, it gave me fucking spider veins all over (includings houlders, ribcage, hip and chest area!) and then I had to spend thousands to get RID of them...
gustavq 7th-Apr-2014 04:58 pm (UTC)
Before I leave the house I put on some of Lush's Enzymion. It leaves my oily as fuck homo skin flawless.
bucky_barnes 7th-Apr-2014 04:58 pm (UTC)
i need so much time in the morning it's terrible. i have to get up super early to be anywhere on time.
finchburg 7th-Apr-2014 06:15 pm (UTC)
I am the same and if washing and styling my hair is involved some virgins better be sacrificed bc it would be a miracle if I'm on time.
hannahgrace456 7th-Apr-2014 11:47 pm (UTC)
lmao
labellavitaaa 8th-Apr-2014 12:33 am (UTC)
Ugh SAME I need like 2 hours not counting commute
rainbowren 7th-Apr-2014 04:58 pm (UTC)
Yeah I would have a great beauty regime too if I had the money gurl!
For now I'm happy with my Clinique products.
weatherstaff 7th-Apr-2014 04:59 pm (UTC)
Wake up, grab breakfast, get dressed, brush teeth wash face with Saint Ive's green tea moisturizer go to class then when I get out of class I shower if I did not get a chance to shower the night before and do my makeup.
saintvlas22 7th-Apr-2014 05:00 pm (UTC)
You eat before brushing your teeth?
weatherstaff 7th-Apr-2014 05:02 pm (UTC)
yeahhh i brush my teeth after I eat so my breath doesn't smell like what I eat I guess. It's weird.
celestinaketzia 7th-Apr-2014 05:05 pm (UTC)
I do. It gets the food out of your teeth. Plus toothpaste and coffee is no go
oracularist 7th-Apr-2014 05:11 pm (UTC)
I find it so weird when people brush their teeth before breakfast. That just seems like missing the point of brushing your teeth entirely
inwazyja 7th-Apr-2014 05:12 pm (UTC)
I do, if I remember to actually eat in the morning. It seems redundant to brush before eating. Plus toothpaste doesn't mix well with a lot of foods, tbh.
manita_bestija 7th-Apr-2014 05:14 pm (UTC)
well... isn't the whole point of brushing your teeth cleaning your mouth of food traces? because that's what makes your teeth go bad?
winter_lace 8th-Apr-2014 03:47 am (UTC)
These bizarre people that brush their teeth before they eat
saintvlas22 7th-Apr-2014 04:59 pm (UTC)
Wake up, piss, brush teeth, wash face, dress, eat breakfast. I put on moisturizer in the car.
transientv 7th-Apr-2014 04:59 pm (UTC)
My daily routing is get up at 6:30, shower, go to work for 9 hours, have dinner with my husband & daughter, maybe watch one show or do some yoga, and study until about 11:00 pm. Rinse and repeat. I need to get in more exercise because holy fuck I'm getting fat but the time struggle is real.

For skincare I swear by a BHA exfoliant & moisturizer in the morning, and a retinol serum at night. My skin has never looked/felt better.
dreamformula 7th-Apr-2014 05:10 pm (UTC)
what products do you use?
transientv 7th-Apr-2014 05:15 pm (UTC)
I stan for Paula's Choice. I use the Liquid or Gel 2% BHA, but they just came out with a 4% foam that I want to upgrade to. They have different retinols, I have dry skin so I use the Resist Retinol Serum, but it goes on like a thick silicone (but absorbs pretty quick) so it may not be for everyone.
judgmental 7th-Apr-2014 05:00 pm (UTC)

goldie3 7th-Apr-2014 05:18 pm (UTC)
Wow, I never manage to do that alarm - 10 minutes thing. I put 3 alarms at 5 minutes difference each to ensure I wake up on time, waking up is hard for me :-/
shimmeree 7th-Apr-2014 05:00 pm (UTC)
I have never met a green smoothie I actually liked.
transientv 7th-Apr-2014 05:01 pm (UTC)
I used to get one at this Jamaican grocery store in Memphis, it was called One Love and had spirulina and molasses in it. It was so good but I never found out the full recipe, and they closed down.
shimmeree 7th-Apr-2014 10:47 pm (UTC)
Molasses is a good idea. I'm going to try that one.
dreamformula 7th-Apr-2014 05:09 pm (UTC)
mte. Even though granola health nuts try to pretend they're all so delicious they invariably taste like shit. I drink them anyways though because they make me full for a while.

Try a fruit smoothie instead, it gives you an energy boost and is more flavorful.
shilohninejulia 7th-Apr-2014 06:28 pm (UTC)
try one with banana and apple. they are strong enough to overpower the taste of the greens.
a_perfect_shade 8th-Apr-2014 08:30 pm (UTC)
if you put green apples/lemons in they taste sooo good
theactualworst 7th-Apr-2014 05:01 pm (UTC)
