Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D // Captain America:The Winter Soldier Post

‘Captain America’ Sequel's Massive $37 Million Friday Gives It a Shot at $100 Million

Disney's Marvel superhero saga “The Winter Soldier” is breaking the April record and gets an “A” CinemaScore

“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” was on a record-breaking tear at the box office Saturday, after posting a huge $37 million Friday that put it on track for weekend total that could hit $100 million.

It's pacing to be the biggest April opening ever, ahead of the $86.1 million that “Fast Five” posted in 2011, and easily the year's top debut over the $69 million that “The Lego Movie” put up in February. And it will beat the opening of the last Marvel superhero sequel from Disney, “Thor: The Dark World,” which rolled out with $85.7 million in November.

So the box-office momentum of “Marvel's the Avengers,” the 2012 blockbuster that's the third-highest grossing movie of all time, is still being felt in a major way. “Iron Man 3,” which opened to $178 million last May and went on to take in $1.2 billion worldwide benefited similarly.

It's possible “Winter Soldier” could hit $100 million, depending on the extent to which word of mouth powers a Saturday turnout. First-night audiences gave it an “A” CinemaScore Friday and the critics are on board in a big way — 88 percent on Rotten Tomatoes — so it's not that long a shot.

With 3D in roughly 80 percent of its market-high 3,938 theaters, 341 IMAX theaters and 316 Premium Large Format sites, “The Winter Soldier” was getting a boost from premium tickets. And $10.2 million of the Friday haul came from Thursday night screenings.

Chris Evans returns as Captain America and allies himself with Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow and Anthony Mackie's Falcon in “Winter Soldier,” which also features Robert Redford as a shadowy bureaucrat. Joe and Anthony Russo direct, from a script by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, while Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige again rides herd as a producer.

"Turn, Turn, Turn" - Coulson and his team find themselves without anyone they can trust, only to discover that they are trapped with a traitor in their midst, on "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.," Tuesday, April 8 (8:00-9:01 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.

Marvel fans, listen up: We've got a first look at the opening moments of next week's "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.," which directly ties in with the current big-screen blockbuster "Captain America: The Winter Soldier."

In what is probably the best 90-second cold open of any show this season, a couple of S.H.I.E.L.D. fighter pilots try to shoot down Bill Paxton's jet, but Bill Paxton isn't having any of it because… well, he's Bill Paxton.

Last week's “S.H.I.E.L.D.” was one of the most successful of the season, and had pretty much everything the show had been promising to deliver from the beginning: action, drama, a little super-villainy, a little comedy, and a connection with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In this case, that connection was a S.H.I.E.L.D. conspiracy that ties in with “Winter Soldier."

And next Tuesday's “Turn, Turn, Turn” looks to keep that same pace. Agent Coulson and friends are on their way to a S.H.I.E.L.D. firing squad as their ally, Agent Garrett (played with appropriately cool charm by Paxton), is dodging heat-seeking missiles. And of course, Garrett is listening to “Don't Fear the Reaper.”

If you've been waiting for “Agents” to get good, but grew tired of all the set-up earlier in the season, now is a good time to get on board. “Winter Soldier” may have been just the shot in the arm the series needed to turn it into the exciting and fun action show it's always wanted to be.

“Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on ABC.
