Though it might still be gloomy outside, it's officially spring, which means summer—and bathing suit season—is right around the corner. In honor of Victoria's Secret's new swim collection, we shared a green juice and a chat with Victoria's Secret Angel Behati Prinsloo, who gave us the lowdown on last-minute body beautifying tips, the most flattering bikinis, and how to look good in a bathing-suit selfie.
What are some of your go-to workout tips for summer?
For summer, I definitely love doing stuff outside. I love beach volleyball if you’re close to something like that. It’s really fun, you can do it with a lot of friends. I do love stand-up paddle boarding, that’s a really great workout. Yoga, Pilates—In the summer I really love to be outdoors, so I try to keep it like, hiking, and going to the beach and doing fun things.
Do you have any tips for getting your bikini body ready for a show or something when you know you have to be in a bathing suit the next day?
I mean, same thing, maybe just try to work out a little bit more, go to the gym, do some kickboxing, take a lesson that you haven’t done. Dancing lessons…I’ve been wanting to do this dance class—Candace [Swanepoel] was telling me about it—Zumba. It seems awesome, so I want to try that. I think trying something fun that challenges you and that’s not just you on an elliptical is always fun. I can’t deal with the gym too much if I don’t have somebody telling me what to do. So before we have to do a shoot or anything like that, we usually try to do some kickboxing, eat a little healthier, try to cut out salt.
Is there anything you do if you’re about to walk down the Victoria’s Secret runway? Like five minutes before are you doing crunches?
We always do squats but I’m like “It’s not going to help us now, it’s too late”.
Do you have any tips for taking a picture in your bathing suit? Is there an ideal body angle?
I think side is always nice, hand on the hip, knowing your best angle obviously. Everybody’s different so it’s hard to tell somebody what to do, but I think the side one is always nice. Like, if you’re self conscious of your stomach, cross your arm in front of you…get a friend to cover half of you…I don’t know.
Do you have a most flattering Instagram filter?
Lo-Fi and Valencia are pretty good. But I think the one called X-Pro is my favorite.
Do you add anything to your beauty routine in preparation for summer?
I think for summer it’s always fun to feel a little tanned. I don’t believe in going to a tanning bed, but I do think that putting a little bronzer on. Not a lot, don’t go and get yourself spray tanned, but I mean a nice glow always makes me feel better, especially after winter when you go to the beach and you feel pasty. Someone next to you is all “summer-ready.”
Usually I’m like, blue, which I feel like I am right now. I think a nice glow is a good tip for the summer. Putting some surf spray in your hair, just getting into that summer, surf vibe.
Which of the new Victoria’s Secret bathing suits is your favorite?
I love the rash guard.
Do you surf?
I do! And you never find anything cute in a store, they always have something on them that I don’t want like a logo. Or they’re long. I do love a crop top, because you can kind of just wear it with a high-waisted skirt in Miami and go out. You don’t have to change.
I got my first high-waisted bathing suit for this summer.
It’s flattering, I think it’s very flattering on people. Like, anybody.
I feel like guys are going to think it’s granny.
Yeah, guys are so not into high-waisted things. I love high-waisted jeans. We all think that high-waisted things are flattering and awesome and beautiful and we’re rocking it, and guys are always like ‘Ugh, she’s wearing those high-waisted pants.’
