New "Walking Dead" Character: Our Best Theories

Lesley Goldberg for The Hollywood Reporter writes:
The Walking Dead fans have endured four months of speculation about Gareth, the mysterious character set to be played by Greek alum Andrew J. West. The wait is nearly over.

West will make his debut during Sunday's season four finale, playing Gareth, a character who does not appear in the long-running Image/Skybound series on which the AMC zombie drama is based. Sources tell THR that while Gareth may not be playing someone from the comics, he is a remix of sorts of an unidentified character from Robert Kirkman's comics.

The character will have what sources tell THR is a big presence, playing an important character on the series. West, for his part, is being credited as a guest star in season four with an option to be promoted to regular in season five.

So who the heck could Gareth be? We've read all the Walking Dead comics and these are three of our best theories. Be warned: Major spoilers from The Walking Dead comics ahead.

1. He's a remix of Chris, the leader of the so-called Hunters, a group of survivors who turned to (gasp!) cannibalism in order to survive. In the comics, the Hunters evolved from hunting animals in favor of humans as they looked for smaller groups of people to feast on as food became in increasingly short supply.

Our logic: With Rick's group divided and everyone seemingly headed for Terminus, what better way to hunt humans than to have them come to you? Plus did you catch a glimpse of what Mary (Denise Crosby) was cooking when Glenn, Maggie and company first arrived at Terminus?! We don't know about you, but that looked like an arm on the grill to us! To paraphrase Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green), if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

We floated the idea to exec producer Greg Nicotero, who said it was an "an interesting theory." "The people that have survived in this world have survived at a cost. This entire season was based on the premise of, 'Can you do what it takes to stay alive?' "

2. He's a version of Negan, the current villain in the comics who makes The Governor (David Morrissey) look tame by comparison. In the comics, [massive spoiler alert!] Negan is responsible for putting a spiked bat -- which he lovingly refers to by the name of Lucille -- to Glenn's head, ending his life in front of a pregnant Maggie as Rick and company looked on. Worse: He's a polygamist who uses violence to take a regular cut of any other camp's food and supplies.

Our logic: We know the finale can't be all sunshine and unicorns -- that's so not the way of the show. Further, showrunner Scott M. Gimple is a long-time fan of the comics and is "super-excited to get to Negan's story." The exec producer told THR earlier this season that there's a lot of cool story to tell before Negan's arrival. "We're not getting to him this season; I wish we were." But does that mean he can't appear, however briefly a la Michonne's first appearance -- in the season finale?

3. He's a version of Alexander, the creator of the Alexandria Safe-Zone settlement. For the uninitiated, the Alexandria Safe-Zone -- named after former House of Representatives security liaison Alexander, is in Virginia and to-date, ranks as the longest-running survivors community in the comics. It's a gated community -- much like Terminus -- that consists of houses where Rick and company take residence alongside another group of survivors. In the comics, Alexander is referenced multiple times but never seen (much like Lord Voldemort in the first Harry Potter films). The character is said to have abused his power and run out of the community after offering women protection in exchange for sex. (In other words, a total creeper.) Among his victims: Beth -- a character who lived at the compound who committed suicide after his advances. She's not to be confused with Maggie's sister, Beth Greene, who does not exist in the comics. (In the graphic novels, Magg
ie's sister, Lacey, was killed during the barn attack in the comics.)

Our logic: Has anyone seen Beth after her mysterious abduction? How random is it that a car would be sitting and waiting outside of the country club where Beth was last seen escaping from following a walker attack? Seems like someone's been following everyone as they've been slowly making their way to Terminus.

Those are our best theories...The Walking Dead season four finale airs Sunday at 9 p.m. on AMC.

What are your theories on this guy and the finale?  Are you all ready for it?!

Rick or Daryl will die tomorrow!
jonesingjay 30th-Mar-2014 09:54 am (UTC)
one can only hope
livejawny 30th-Mar-2014 03:27 pm (UTC)
mte this show needs a real shake up. praying for rick to die but think it's gonna be daryl (honestly ok with that too).
bangorilla 30th-Mar-2014 10:09 am (UTC)
shut yo mouth! (daryl can die idgaf but not my puppy PLS)
smirk_dog 30th-Mar-2014 12:21 pm (UTC)
SHUT YOUR MOUTH. Daryl can go, but not my sweet bear of manpain.
anthknee 30th-Mar-2014 04:56 am (UTC)
He's cute.
chunkysweater 30th-Mar-2014 05:06 am (UTC)
mhmm only reason why I came in here. I don't watch this show
zombieland 30th-Mar-2014 04:56 am (UTC)
I really hope to never see Negan in the show. He's such a shitty villain with no depth.
jamaicanmelaugh 30th-Mar-2014 05:02 am (UTC)
Did you see the two Governor-only (and Tara) episodes this season? I hope not, because they were a JOKE. I think Negan is a way more ruthless, scary villain than Philip was.
zombieland 30th-Mar-2014 05:08 am (UTC)
Negan is definitely more ruthless, but his character is one-dimensional and boring. I also don't believe he's smart enough to lead an entire group of people. The writers did a good job making him cruel, but beyond that there's nothing interesting him. I can't wait for the war arc in the comics to be over, it's dragged on way too long.
donnanoble 30th-Mar-2014 05:29 am (UTC)
ita
i just dont find him to be an interesting character.
shining_starsxx 30th-Mar-2014 06:02 am (UTC)
What? Negan is everything.
zyuranger 30th-Mar-2014 04:56 am (UTC)
He was on Suburgatory a few weeks ago. And he was also on Privileged for a little bit.

bagelsvswaffles 30th-Mar-2014 04:59 am (UTC)
"responsible for putting a spiked bat -- which he lovingly refers to by the name of Lucille -- to Glenn's head, ending his life"

Andrea dying should mean Glenn doesn't have to, tbh.
uncletam 30th-Mar-2014 05:00 am (UTC)
Reading that part made my heart sink even though I knew he dies in the comic. I DON'T NEED TO SEE THAT, I WILL NOT HAVE THE STRENGTH.
thespockingdead 30th-Mar-2014 05:04 am (UTC)
My bb Glenn had BETTER NOT DIE LIKE THIS on the show. I will not stand for such injustice.
bagelsvswaffles 30th-Mar-2014 05:31 am (UTC)
Like, I need something to thirst over while I watch and Glenn is it. Rick is hot in a dilfy way sometimes, but other times he looks way rough. But Glenn is always hot so he can't die.
saturdaysinbed 30th-Mar-2014 06:25 am (UTC)
mte.
go3x 31st-Mar-2014 01:58 am (UTC)
Pretty much. Since they already killed 1 of the 3 original characters (Rick, Glenn, and Andrea), it's only fair that the remaining 2 gets to stay alive.
jamaicanmelaugh 30th-Mar-2014 05:00 am (UTC)
I'm so fucking sick of them dragging out Emily Kinney/Beth's basic, boring, can't-act-for-shit character. She hasn't done shit in 4 seasons besides sing and kill one, maybe two walkers. She's the antithesis of Carol, who has had AMAZING character development, definitely the best of all of the cast. She knows what it takes to survive.

Oh, and if they kill Daryl off tomorrow, I will scream, cheer, jump up and down, etc...for many reasons, one being the terribly annoying "If Daryl dies, we riot" stans meltdown.
bagelsvswaffles 30th-Mar-2014 05:04 am (UTC)
I need Daryl's fans to know what it's like to know their fave wasn't safe. I know every single one of my faves will likely die at some point. I've already lost a few. Meanwhile, Daryl fans get the fake "Daryl could die!" tears and I'm not here for it. I want real ones. It's their turn.
uncletam 30th-Mar-2014 05:07 am (UTC)
Yeah. As much as I like Reedus and would be sad when Daryl dies, it's boring for Daryl to be safe just because he has such a huge fan base. It would be such a shock for him to die tomorrow or soon and you know the writers would make it insane because you can't just kill Daryl off easily. I would love to see him sacrifice himself for Beth and have the crazy Daryl fans implode.
hjohnson 30th-Mar-2014 01:53 pm (UTC)
Pretty much. No one should be safe on this show. And the fact that its more likely that the main character will die, then DARYL is ridiculous.
imsweetgetsome 30th-Mar-2014 04:07 pm (UTC)
My favorite (or one of my favorites) dies every season: Jim in season 1, Shane in season 2, Merle in season 3 and Martinez in season 4. Idgaf who does die, as long as it's not Michonne or Carol (I don't see it being Michonne but I wouldn't be surprised if Carol died--although I doubt that for now, too).

I think I'd be kind of happy if Daryl died as his character has been annoying. Maybe Beth will die as no one other than Daryl cares about her (Maggie hasn't even asked about her, wtf).

After last week's episode I wouldn't be surprised if Maggie died and I'd be happy. I can't stand her.

bagelsvswaffles 30th-Mar-2014 05:06 am (UTC)
As for Beth, can she be what Rick finds? Like, I've only seen the trailer once, but I know he reacts badly to finding something, so seeing a dead Beth stuffed inside a trunk or whatever could work. I mean, I doubt he's expecting to find someone from the group dead like that.
rlmoonyk 30th-Mar-2014 05:15 am (UTC)
I used to be a big fan of Daryl's but now I don't even care if he dies. It'd definitely spice things up on the show
aquanite 30th-Mar-2014 08:30 am (UTC)
Seriously, Beth is the most boring fucking character on the show, I really don't understand anyone who really likes her?? SHE ADDS NOTHING and she totally has been feeling like a Mary-Sue lately ugh

yeah, definitely taking screen time away from characters who need it.
jonesingjay 30th-Mar-2014 09:56 am (UTC)
i agree with everything you said.

with daryl though. i wouldn't mind if they killed him. just as long as it's not obviously for shock value, but organic to the plat. whatever the fuck that means. he can also take glenn with him.
bangorilla 30th-Mar-2014 10:11 am (UTC)
beth is so boring OMG
the basic acting is making it even worse
thisisred 30th-Mar-2014 10:11 am (UTC)
but i just bought the t-shirt :(
livejawny 30th-Mar-2014 03:29 pm (UTC)
I think they will be killing Daryl and I cannot wait to read all the tumblr cries about it.
dragoncrab88 30th-Mar-2014 10:13 pm (UTC)
Carol has definitely grown so much since sea 1 and one of my faves.

Beth on the other hand hasn't grown much at all, and that one ep where she was putting herself and Darryl in a hell of a lot of danger just to get "a drink" made me want to smack her.
fubukihakuryu 30th-Mar-2014 05:00 am (UTC)
Terminus is totally cannibal town.
uncletam 30th-Mar-2014 05:02 am (UTC)
Did you notice the arm on the grill that the article mentions? I didn't.
thespockingdead 30th-Mar-2014 05:25 am (UTC)
WHAT? I never noticed an arm!
dragoncrab88 30th-Mar-2014 10:08 pm (UTC)
this. Or at least I'm hoping they bring that story from the comics into the show and that is in fact what Terminus is.
justkeepworking 30th-Mar-2014 05:00 am (UTC)
I hope multiple people bite it, especially if the ending will be ambiguous.
uncletam 30th-Mar-2014 05:05 am (UTC)
What would really be kind of crazy is if they show us scenes with Beth trying to escape her captors or whatever, making us think she gets out safe. But it all leads up to the end of the finale being the cannibalism part and everyone is unknowingly eating her but the audience won't realize it until next season when they show that Beth couldn't escape and what we were seeing actually took place the day before everyone arrived to Terminus.
thespockingdead 30th-Mar-2014 05:08 am (UTC)
That sounds like something they'd do tbh. I can see them pulling that kind of plot twist.
aquanite 30th-Mar-2014 08:31 am (UTC)
That would be awesome omg I HOPE
gymleadermisty 30th-Mar-2014 03:21 pm (UTC)
that would be so sick and kind of like what happens in TWD game and it killed me then too
uncletam 30th-Mar-2014 05:06 pm (UTC)
Didn't they do that to The Gov though?
thespockingdead 30th-Mar-2014 05:06 am (UTC)
As long as Glenn survives and the episode is more interesting than last year's hour-long game of footsie with Andrea, I'm fine.
uncletam 30th-Mar-2014 05:14 am (UTC)
Rick, Carl, Michonne, Tyreese, Carol, Judith, Glenn, Beth, and Maggie all have "Who Will Survive/Arrive?" Terminus posters but DARYL DOESN'T.
arielcharming 30th-Mar-2014 05:36 am (UTC)
Judith has a poster? lulz

Edited at 2014-03-30 05:36 am (UTC)
uncletam 30th-Mar-2014 05:39 am (UTC)
She's like on Carol's back or something, it's not a solo glamor shot Judith poster...haha!
