Ellen Page's night out with BFF Kate Mara

Ellen Page and her friend Kate Mara are rumoured to be on the list to star in the brand new season of HBO's True Detective.

The 27-year-old Juno star was certainly playing discreet as she stepped out with 31-year-old Kate for an evening at the Chateau Marmont in Hollywood on Wednesday.

The pair continued their low-profile mode as they were seen leaving the popular celebrity haunt and walking towards a waiting cab.

Ellen wore black-rimmed spectacles and was dressed casually in a red plaid lumberjack shirt, a bulky green jacket and blue jeans, looking more like someone about to chop down trees than a bonafide Hollywood star.

The camera-shy actress topped off the comfortable outfit with a baseball cap that had 'Tom Boy' written across the front.

Kate followed a step behind with her eyes equally downcast and her shoulder-length blonde hair falling across her face that appeared devoid of make-up.

Like Ellen, Kate was dressed down and in the mood for obvious comfort, wearing dark jeans, a green loosely fitted T-shirt and black leather jacket with zipper details.

Perhaps the best friends were discussing the possibility of starring in season two of True Detective, the HBO series that just ended its first season starring Mattnew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in the lead roles.

Season two will feature a new cast of characters out to solve a brand new case, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The rumour of the gals taking over the hit detective show has been circulating round the internet of late.

Kate even took to Twitter last week to write her pal, 'Dear @EllenPage, What does this mean?! You think they like the idea of two tiny detectives?'

Ellen replied, 'I think that basically is the equivalent of a signed contract. I will see you at rehearsals!'

Last month, Ellen made the brave announcement that she was gay during a speech at the Human Rights Campaign's Time To THRIVE conference for LGBTQ [Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning] youth.

The actress said she hoped her news would help others struggling with their sexuality, saying: 'I'm here today because I am gay. And because maybe I can make a difference.

'To help others have an easier and more hopeful time. Regardless, for me, I feel a personal obligation and a social responsibility.'

According to the Hollywood Reporter, she added: 'It's weird because here I am, an actress, representing - at least in some sense - an industry that places crushing standards on all of us.'
