Just as they are preparing to launch J.J. Abrams’ Believe to UK audiences tonight, UKTV has snapped up another of Abrams’ new series for their flagship entertainment channel Watch.
UKTV has closed a deal with Warner Bros. International Television Distribution to acquire the exclusive first run UK broadcast rights to Almost Human, the Fox drama series executive produced by Abrams which stars Karl Urban (Star Trek) and Sleeper Cell‘s Michael Ealy. The drama, which recently wrapped its first season in the US, is set to launch on Watch this May.
Almost Human was created by J.H. Wyman and is described as a buddy cop drama, set in the near future, when all LAPD officers are partnered with highly evolved human-like androids. The drama follows Detective John Kennex, who is the sole survivor of a devastating police ambush. When he wakes from a 17-month coma he can’t remember much — except that his partner was killed, he lost one of his legs and he is now outfitted with a highly sophisticated synthetic appendage. The series is produced by Warner Bros. Television and Bad Robot and stars Karl Urban, Michael Ealy, Mekia Cox, Minka Kelly, Lili Taylor, Mackenzie Crook and Michael Irby.
“The combination of Almost Human’s unique and compelling twist on a police procedural drama and J.J. Abrams’ stamp of creative quality makes this show the perfect fit for Watch”, said Steve Hornsey, General Manger of Watch. “It also reinforces our commitment to premiering fresh and exciting US content to UK viewers, ahead of other British broadcasters.”
UKTV’S Director of Programme Acquisitions Catherine Mackin, who negotiated the deal with Warner Bros, added: “We are delighted to be extending our ongoing relationship with Warner Bros. and bringing more high quality premiere content to British audiences first. Almost Human is a multi-layered gripping drama and it perfectly complements our upcoming supernatural drama Believe, from award-winning director Alfonso Cuarón and J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions.”
While Jeffrey Schlesinger, President of Warner Bros. Worldwide Television Distribution added: “We believe that Almost Human will be a terrific addition to Watch’s programming line-up. We look forward to the series finding a loyal following in the U.K.”
This deal for Almost Human comes after the series emerged with much chatter after the LA Screenings with TVWise reporting at the time that UKTV were interested in the genre show. This also marks the second major deal between Warner Bros and UKTV in recent months, with the two having previously reached a deal for the aforementioned Believe. The two parties have also had a long and successful relationship prior to these deals, working together on such series as Alcatraz and Rizzoli & Isles.
