"American Horror Story” will return to New Orleans to film its upcoming fourth season, a spokesman for 20th Century Fox Television confirmed Monday (March 24). The season’s subtitle and theme: “Freak Show.” Its setting: Jupiter, Fla., circa 1950.
It was a head-spinning day for fans of the wacko anthology series, a hit for the FX cable network that set and shot its third season, “American Horror Story: Coven,” in New Orleans.
First, Ryan Murphy, the show’s creator, tweeted the “Freak Show” news. (Fans had been guessing a carnival theme, which had been recently been confirmed by one of the show’s writers.)
Then, Tim Stack of EW.com solidified the theme and setting and some returning cast members. According to Stack, who has expertly worked the “AHS” beat for Entertainment Weekly, Jessica Lange will play a German expatriate managing a fading, Florida-based freak show.
Playing her flock: Kathy Bates, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett and Frances Conroy — like Lange, all returning from “Coven” (and in some cases earlier seasons of “AHS”). “Coven” vets Denis O’Hare and Emma Roberts are also in talks to return for the 13-episode season, Stack also reported.
That New Orleans would continue as the show’s production location for another season had been a speculative prospect since early in “Coven’s” production run, as Murphy, Lange, Bates and other cast members were generous with public praise for the city.
Arthur Vandelay of Scene Magazine reported “AHS’s” fourth-season New Orleans return in February, but FX wouldn’t confirm the news. Fox Television, which produces the series, confirmed it Monday in the wake of the title-and-setting news flashes.
So, the “American Horror Story" season ahead, expected to air in the same fall-to-winter window as “Coven:”
But shot in New Orleans.
And Jessica Lange plays the mistress of ceremonies.
