With the upcoming new Sailor Moon series, here's our last chance to relish in the original anime's fight scenes. These are all exclusive to the anime; the manga's battles are usually portrayed with vague flashes of light. These are just my own faves - please list your own in the comments!

Storm of Love! Minako's Grand Two-Timing Plan is exactly what it says on the tin. The entire episode is a laugh a minute as Mina bites off more than she can chew when trying to date both Tigers Eye and Hawks Eye. This episode marks the second time Sailor Venus has used an improvised attack. It is also the second time Minako has resisted the enemy's attempts at assault while in her civilian identity; after getting strapped to the Amazon Trio's board, her fit of rage allows her to break out of solid metal binds and she gets her own Dream Mirror back. She's so set on attacking Tigers Eye and Hawks Eye that the Lemures in this episode is secondary to her, though Gittanko and Battanko do get caught in the crossfire of her Furious Random Crescent Beam Shots (along with Sailor Moon and Sailor Chibi Moon!).

This is a very different kind of battle - rather than physical fighting, the tacticians of the Ayakashi Sisters and the Sailor Senshi battle it out with not only their brilliant minds, but their hearts and souls. The deadly chess game, where a portion of your body is frozen for every chess piece lost, is wagered with the lives of the other 4 Sailor Senshi. Though confident in her own abilities, Berthier immediately cheats and gives herself an advantage on the board. She also engages in psychological torment, mocking Sailor Mercury for her illogical decision to play the game rather than run away to save herself. What Berthier can't understand is why Ami would risk her own life for others, especially after her sisters abandon her following Berthier's failure to succeed in her mission. What follows is a breakdown, as she tries to turn herself and everyone in the room into unfeeling ice.

This is one of the few times we see a battle against a non-humanoid enemy. The Senshi put up an impressive fight against the giant, fire breathing lizard. They strategically attack it's vulnerable under-belly, disable its wings, and try to freeze it into submission (courtesy of Sailor Mercury). After destroying the dragon via its main weak point - the tiara on its head - we see the dragon's true form of Esmeraude. Sailor Moon characteristically shows her empathy for the fallen villainess, but so does Prince Demande. Esmeraude's death starts to spark the distrust within the remaining Black Moon Clan.

Another hilarious episode, this features repeated failures of Sailor Chibi Moon's "Pink Sugar Heart Attack" in action, Usagi getting her bottom pecked at by a pesky bird, takoyaki, awkward cross-dressing, and a Monster-of-the-Day who may have been more comfortable in a strip club than serving tea.

Unlike the manga, Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune's Talismans don't get used until near the end of the third season - when they're finally unleashed though, it's quite the spectacle. After fighting Germatoid's artificial dolls (which act as his numerous proxies in battle), to no avail, the situation looks bleak for the remaining 2 members of the Outer Senshi. When the voice of seemingly deceased Sailor Pluto is heard, the tide is turned as the Space Sword and Deep Aqua Mirror are summoned. Sailor Neptune uses her mirror to reveal the true target, which Sailor Uranus destroys with the blade of energy her sword houses.

The higher production values of the movies meant we got longer and better animated fight scenes. From start to finish, the fight against the flower monster in the streets is one stunning display after another. Most notably, the Sailor Senshi use almost their full arsenal of attacks during the battle, mixing and matching their abilities from both the first and second season.

Though the Inner Senshi started off on shaky ground, by this point in the third season, they were more than fully able to deal with the enemy. The twin sorceresses in this episode, though, proved to be one of the few enemies they couldn't directly defeat, though not for lack of trying. To compensate for their lack of raw power, teamwork and tactics was expertly utilized. First, separating the twins after feeding their ability to grow stronger by absorbing the Senshis' powers; then, lead them through the mist obscured area (created by Sailor Mercury) and trick the twins into attacking each other. It was important to amp up the twins power for a sure-kill shot, since the Senshi knew they had only one chance to end things. As has been seen throughout the series, it is teamwork that makes the Sailor Team so strong.

The entire fifth season contained lazy animation and incredibly lackluster fight scenes, mainly due to the boring and uninspired Phages. This fight scene, however, was a lightshow extravaganza! As the Starlights get their second wind, they decide to fully stand against Sailor Galaxia, combining their powers, and managing to avenge their fallen Princess and planet by actually drawing Sailor Galaxia's blood. They then up the ante by turning themselves into energy and continuing their assault against the Golden Queen, though ultimately, they are unable to defeat her. Even so, this flashy battle is one of the best in the series. STAGE ON!

As in the manga, each Sister corresponds to one of the Senshi. The clash between them, in this episode of revelations and emotion, is EPIC, if only for the song 'Ai no Sneshi' that is seamlessly played during the battle.

The initial final battle the Sailor Senshi face is by far the most extraordinary. Each individual Senshi fulfills her duty and sacrifices her life so their Princess can live.

Sailor Jupiter goes out with cocky bravado: You have a lot of guts, trying to kill me with electricity!

Sailor Mercury analyzes the situation, and calmly assesses that she is a liability. She aids her friends by freeing them of the illusions she knows Sailor Moon is susceptible to, doing so with a final use of her mini-computer.

Sailor Venus firmly orders Sailor Moon to refrain from saving her and from giving up the Silver Crystal, lest she wants her to never forgive her.

And Sailor Mars finishes off the remaining enemies, along with herself, with one final FIRE SOUL. This is only after she lets down her guard for just a moment, to comfort Sailor Moon with a false promise that she will return to Usagi, knowing full well she's walking to her death.

Thanks so much to zyuranger for letting me use his gifs, all taken from his blog.

any battle with a new attack sequence animation imo

That episode with ManeMane Musume showed off a bunch of new attack sequences. It's also why the movies are so great - less stock footage!

I just finished watching the series. Omg cheesy but the story lines were fucking brilliant. Rei and minako, their friendship, personal stories...wow

I really need to rewatch the R season but after the Doom Tree. It's been so long since I've watched it and only in English but I remember loving it.

Jupiter's scream when she's dying in the finale of Classic always gives me shivers.

First two are flawless. I still cry every time I watch the first one.

OP how could you not include Sailor Moon/Saturn vs Mistress 9 though.

Sailor Saturn waking up in the planetarium episode should be on the list too. Dat music. And I don't know if it counts as a fight but one of my only favourite parts in Super S is Sailor Moon vs Nehelenia.
queen_insane 20th-Mar-2014 03:49 pm (UTC)
Yasss. My fave battles is still Sailor Senshi v Queen Nehellenia part 2 (aka the moment between SS and Stars) and Sailor Moon v pretty much any and all of the Death Busters - This includes Mistress 9.

Speaking of Sailor Moon I just now looked at the panels for Anime Boston and including the voice actor panel they are have FIVE panels on Sailor Moon: One general, one about the reboot, one for merch, one for the fandom, and then the mentioned VA one.

I loved the Inner Senshi and Outer Senshi pairs during those episodes! However, I just like these 10 more =)
queen_insane 20th-Mar-2014 03:52 pm (UTC)
And that is 100% your opinion. I think a lot of it is tinted by who we like the most. Sailor Moon is my fave so whenever she steps up the the plate I get misty eyed.
belladonnastrap 20th-Mar-2014 03:52 pm (UTC)
There is a lack of M9 on this list haha but it's good!

Man when the inner senshi die in the first season I just remember going WAT WAT WAT. Especially Mars!
saintvlas22 20th-Mar-2014 04:03 pm (UTC)
I tend to shy away from emotional scenes, tbh, since I think the battle part is secondary to the FEELS, which is what I tend to focus on. I can hardly remember the fight against Mistress 9, for example - I just remember Hotaru being a badass and busting out of her as SAILOR SATURN.

saintvlas22 Re: flawless20th-Mar-2014 03:55 pm (UTC)
I can't really count this as a battle, since Hotaru never fights back in this scene and it really just consists of the Outer Senshi blasting their attacks once.

You're right about DAT MUSIC though.
gabzillaz Re: flawless20th-Mar-2014 03:56 pm (UTC)
True. I just love it because of the combined badassery of Saturn and the music.
zombieland Re: flawless20th-Mar-2014 06:09 pm (UTC)
My favorite! I really hope Saturn is shown a lot more in the new series. She's the most fascinating Sailor Soldier imo

A really emotional scene, but if I had to pick amongst these episodes, I would pick the Neptune/Mars team-up.
