Lord and Miller not returning (as directors) for 'The Lego Movie 2'

‘The LEGO Movie‘ was a huge, huge success for both Warner Bros. and LEGO (over $225 million and the highest-grossing movie of the year, so far) and both parties moved quickly to make sure ‘The LEGO Movie 2‘ was happening. That’s the good news. The bad news is that it will be happening without Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who wrote and directed the original.
Like ‘Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2,’ Lord and Miller will produce the upcoming ‘LEGO’ sequel, but have instead passed the directorial reigns over to Chris McKay, the ‘LEGO Movie’ co-director. Michelle Morgan and Jared Stern are currently writing the ‘LEGO Movie 2′ script.
UPDATE: Chris Miller just tweeted his and Lord’s support of McKay:
Very excited @buddboetticher is directing LEGO 2. He was the underheralded hero of the 1st one. @philiplord & I will still be very involved.
— Chris Miller (@chrizmillr) March 12, 2014
It’s disappointing to know that Lord and Miller, who were so much a part of what made ‘The LEGO Movie’ a hit, won’t be returning, but one can hardly blame them. ‘The LEGO Movie’ made them A-list directors and with ‘22 Jump Street‘ opening this summer, they’re going to want to focus their career live-action. Lord and Miller spent about four years making ‘The LEGO Movie,’ which is a lot of time to devote to one project.
The directing duo haven’t yet decided on their next project and when we asked them, they said they just wanted to take a break. And, that more than anything seems like the motivation behind not immediately launching into ‘The LEGO Movie 2,’ which Warner Bros. has already locked into a May 26, 2017 release date.
As for ‘The LEGO Movie 2,’ McKay has proved himself a worthy successor, working closely with Lord and Miller on the original and working with Adult Swim for many years (so you know he shares a similar, subversive sense of humor).

I wonder if marvel or dc gonna offer them something
brucelynn 12th-Mar-2014 07:46 pm (UTC)
If for some reason Marvel and DC pulled a Who Framed Roger Rabbit with the sequel I would die

I would love to see them do a Hulk / Hawkeye team up movie.
abbie 12th-Mar-2014 08:15 pm (UTC)
Or have FOX snatch them up and have them do a Deadpool movie
walker_sarah 12th-Mar-2014 08:19 pm (UTC)
I think many things are done with fox's deadpool movie. it's just that they can't move on without deciding +18 or more general audience friendly.

I am not happy with current mcu hawkeye tho that's because we couldn't see his character fully but I am here for it. It could be a team up between she hulk and hulk too
backupblood 12th-Mar-2014 08:28 pm (UTC)
lbr it's probably to clear them up for 23 Jump Street
walker_sarah 12th-Mar-2014 08:30 pm (UTC)
I think they can handle live action comic book movie because many portrays in lego movie was good but you are probably right
xaristotlex 12th-Mar-2014 07:45 pm (UTC)
I have seen this movie ONCE and that song gets stuck in my head every single day omfg

but the movie was so cute and I can't wait to see it again; the humor was such a refreshing change of pace from most blockbuster animated movies. my theatre was full of adults who were laughing uproariously and there was only one family with kids. I'm curious what most kids thought of it, tbh.

One of the local sports talk radio stations was playing it basically nonstop last week and my bf briefly became obsessed with singing it :(

If you enjoyed Lego movie, you might like Clone High.
alfendi 12th-Mar-2014 07:53 pm (UTC)
The theater I saw it in had a pretty mixed group of adults and kids and the adults were definitely laughing a lot more than the kids.
brucelynn 12th-Mar-2014 07:46 pm (UTC)
Who wants to come watch Marvel movies on my double decker couch ??
gravity1318 12th-Mar-2014 07:52 pm (UTC)
Has anyone ever asked them, like on a red carpet or something, who Abe would've picked if the show had continued?

Because I would like to fucking know.
melbournegirl 12th-Mar-2014 08:04 pm (UTC)
Obv, Kelly Taylor it.
mondler_4ever 12th-Mar-2014 07:53 pm (UTC)
So shocked that this movie was a hit. I want to see it so bad now.
sweet_heloise 12th-Mar-2014 07:53 pm (UTC)
Without them, the sequel is going to be shit. Just like what happened with Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2.
soft_volume 12th-Mar-2014 07:55 pm (UTC)
i loved the lego movie but i think a sequel is completely unnecessary.
faunyoudork 12th-Mar-2014 08:00 pm (UTC)
batman was the only reason i wanted to see it
he was such a doucher but what do you expect from a movie aimed at boys
shangman 12th-Mar-2014 08:06 pm (UTC)

this film seemed pretty much aimed at all kids to me tho

also batman was hilarious and perfect, and lbr way funnier for adults
faunyoudork 12th-Mar-2014 08:08 pm (UTC)
the movie itself yeah but the promos and shit iirc were tryna rake in the lil male audiences

batman was aight
glad they didn't make him a dumbass though lol i thought he delivered
sandstorm 12th-Mar-2014 08:09 pm (UTC)
The promos ignored anyone who wasn't evil, Emmet, 'cool', or 'hip' (like Unikitty)
xxxquothxxx 12th-Mar-2014 08:38 pm (UTC)
all the dc lego's were so ooc (superman and hal are best buddies dammit) but when i realised it was essentially a little kid narrating them i wasn't so mad lmao.
faunyoudork 12th-Mar-2014 08:39 pm (UTC)
LOL this was exactly what I went through
yurasama_love 12th-Mar-2014 08:00 pm (UTC)
Well OK.
blue_birds 12th-Mar-2014 08:04 pm (UTC)
I loved it but hmm idk about a sequel. It feels kind of unnecessary.
tankmachine 12th-Mar-2014 08:05 pm (UTC)
idk this is like how Jason Segel didn't write the Muppets sequel and now i'm a bit concerned about it
andres01234 12th-Mar-2014 08:11 pm (UTC)
I loved this movie so much, I need a blu ray rip asap!
johndavidrage 12th-Mar-2014 08:12 pm (UTC)
this was such a cute movie but a sequel seems unnecessary
invisible_cunt 12th-Mar-2014 08:14 pm (UTC)
is this movie even good? because i feel like people are just ironically saying it was amazing
the trailer looks like a clusterfuck
sandstorm 12th-Mar-2014 08:16 pm (UTC)
It really is.
rex_dart 12th-Mar-2014 09:35 pm (UTC)
My wife COULD NOT even entertain the idea that it might be as good as our friends all said it was but I took her anyway and she was laughing louder than anyone in the theater. It's pretty amazing.
wackypinkbunny 12th-Mar-2014 10:28 pm (UTC)
I think it's just alright. I really liked the first 20 minutes of it though. I'm kind of picky on voice-actors and totally think that they should have re-casted Batman and the Pirate guy (his voice was the worst, I couldn't wait for him to stop talking). Also, WildStyle's only role is to exist for the protagonist and it's made obvious throughout the whole movie. Emmet never treats her as an equal, NEVER. So that really soured me on the movie too. The Awesome song is fun though.
mana_runigha 12th-Mar-2014 10:54 pm (UTC)
I thought the same about the trailer, but I enjoyed it. My mom was surprised she ended up liking it. That should tell you you should see it.
vldtheimpaler 12th-Mar-2014 10:57 pm (UTC)
Lego Movie sucked so much
mana_runigha 12th-Mar-2014 10:59 pm (UTC)
I really loved the ending, I was dying!! [Spoils]The boy was trying so hard to convince his dad to let him play with all the awesome Legos and he succeeds, but didn't count on his dad allowing his baby sister to also play with them. It just killed me thinking it's this selfish kid's plan backfiring!![Spoiler (click to open)]

Oscar for Best Song next year.

I just came back from seeing the movie, I loved Charlie Day's character.
missescapist 13th-Mar-2014 01:00 am (UTC)
I finally got to see it yesterday. Now I can't get the "Everything is awesome" out of my head!
greenfieldcsi 13th-Mar-2014 11:08 pm (UTC)
It was such a perfect movie.
prophecypro 14th-Mar-2014 01:31 pm (UTC)
Eh. we'll see who they get to replace. It was a studio type flick anyway
