Nicolas Cage: 'It really sucks to be famous right now'

Nicolas Cage has a lot on his mind, and he wasn’t afraid to share his thoughts at a talk at SXSW Monday, moderated by his “Joe” writer-director David Gordon Green.

During the hour-long session, Cage talked about how his desire to become an actor stemmed from watching James Dean in “East of Eden” and “Rebel Without a Cause.” He then proceeded to discuss eloquently how film criticism has deteriorated and why it “sucks to be famous” nowadays.

“I started acting because I wanted to be James Dean. I saw him in “Rebel Without a Cause,” “East of Eden.” Nothing affected me — no rock song, no classical music — the way Dean affected in “Eden.” It blew my mind. I was like, “That’s what I want to do.” This was before everyone had a thing called a Smartphone, and before the advent of the “celebutard” — just being famous for famous’ sake. I’m not complaining, but it really sucks to be famous right now.

“Now even the art of film criticism… now in the LA Times, the critic who reviewed “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans,” incorporated how many homes I bought or sold into the review. What the hell does Lindsay Lohan’s personal life have to do with her performance in “The Canyons”? It should always be about the work itself. What difference does it make if Bill Clinton had an affair — how does that affect his performance as President?

“In my opinion, I don’t want to see personal aspects of someone’s life eclipse the work itself,” Cage said.

I mean, on one hand, I kind of agree that people should be judged on the merit of their work. On the other, I can't always do that for some. People like Woody Allen, for example, shouldn't get praise given what he has done in his personal life. I don't give a fuck what he makes and I'll never watch it because he is a pedo.
zeldazonked 11th-Mar-2014 02:16 am (UTC)
lbr, if Nic Cage really did fantastic movies and gave fantastic performances, it would be a different story...
chrislola 11th-Mar-2014 02:17 am (UTC)
Oh, yeah, for sure. I was making more of a general statement. But Nic needs to not do shitty movies if he wants people to recognize him as a good actor. He's been doing nothing but shit for quite a while.
kevonmartini10 11th-Mar-2014 03:01 am (UTC)
He's always been a bit of a weirdo, and weird-looking if we're being honest, but he used to give great performances in great movies.
comalies 11th-Mar-2014 02:08 am (UTC)
Such wisdom.
numbedtoe 11th-Mar-2014 02:11 am (UTC)
I've seen most of his movies. I've even liked several that were just trashy and dumb fun. but he kinda baffles me as an actor. because there are times he's really good. really really good. and times he's just bad. like d rated straight to video 80's realness.

and he can switch back and forth in the same movie. hell the same scene. i still can't wrap my head around it. lol
comalies 11th-Mar-2014 02:12 am (UTC)
MAGIC.
zeldazonked 11th-Mar-2014 02:22 am (UTC)
Have you seen the episode of Community this season where Abed basically goes insane trying to answer the question of whether Nic Cage is in fact a good actor or not?

kwikimart 11th-Mar-2014 09:48 am (UTC)
Idk I think it's coz he over complicates the character sometimes
Hearing him talk about how he creates a character helps clarify why some performances seem so...err...unique
I think we assume he's doing something wrong when a lot of the time he's just playing the character as written
numbedtoe 11th-Mar-2014 02:09 am (UTC)
I think being famous was easier back in the day before so many tabloids, the internet, camera phones and on and on. And there are people, male and female, who had good careers in the 70's that I can't imagine getting a good break today because they're not model perfect looks wise.

I do disagree with him the idea that for a politician, someone who has actual power and influence that their personal life and actions don't matter. I'm not going to necessarily flip out over an affair, but there are things that ping my radar as someone maybe not having good character.

Lilo is a bad example since she's not just famous she's infamous at this point. And most of the reviews I read of the canyons did go, "but ok, now onto her acting."

idk nic you just seem pissy here.

Eh, that ugly muthafucker Miles Teller is getting parts so I'm sure a Dustin Hoffman would be fine nowadays.

Cumberbatch continues to get work.

he's british and an exception to the rule.
my_moloko 11th-Mar-2014 02:29 am (UTC)
I think the politician thing is so iffy. There are lots of male politicians who have had affairs but still been good at their jobs. I think it would have been different if he was referencing politicians sending dick pics on Twitter cause that's definitely poor judgment but when it's just an old fashioned regular affair...meh, I don't care that much.
zeldazonked 11th-Mar-2014 02:32 am (UTC)
Nic Cage was so fug early on in his career, I could barely get through Valley Girl.

He kind of reminds me of Adam Driver in this photo, who is getting tons of buzz lately. But either way, if Cage wasn't a Coppola, I highly doubt he would be where he is today, so I don't think he's ever really been in touch with the rest of the world.

it's weird b/c on the one hand i agree it would be really hard to be famous and if i had the chance i'd probably say no b/c i think i would hate it but on the other hand even though i somewhat sympathize, i hate hearing celebrities complain about it being hard b/c most jobs are hard and a lot of the ones complaining are financially well off enough that if it really bothered them they could leave the profession and do something else.
