Jack Thorne Set to Pen Screenplay for Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Adaptation of SANDMAN

A few months ago, Joseph Gordon-Levitt signed on to produce an adaptation of Neil Gaiman‘s Sandman alongside Warner Bros.’ go-to comic-book-guy, David Goyer (Batman Begins, Man of Steel).

For those unfamiliar with Gaiman’s comic, it centers on Morpheus (a.k.a. Dream), the Lord of Dreams but also expands to follow his six siblings Death, Desire, Destruction, Delirium (formerly Delight), Despair, and Destiny. It’s a wonderful comic book, and it’s not easy to translate beyond its tame first arc (“Preludes and Nocturnes”), which has Dream escaping from a prison and trying to reclaim his objects of power.

This story will probably be the basis for the film, and Deadline reports that Jack Thorne will write the screenplay based on a pitch from Goyer. Thorne wrote the script for How I Live Now (a film I didn’t particularly care for) and the adaptation of Nick Hornby‘s novel A Long Way Down. Personally, I don’t think Sandman needs to go into another medium, but hopefully Thorne, Goyer, and Gordon-Levitt (who the studio hopes will also direct and star in the picture) have found an interesting way to translate it to the big screen.

half second later: JGL???

but now I see he's just a producer. I like him, but he's not how I would picture Dream.

But that's not official yet, right? Anyway, like I said, I didn't really picture him as Dream.

at the time when he was first announced as a producer, iirc he himself said he's not necessarily going to be Dream, and given the backlash those rumours got I think it's unlikely.

there are other roles he could probably take, doesn't mean it has to be Dream's.

Man, I need to reread this.
alfredhitchcock 27th-Feb-2014 04:41 am (UTC)
i've never seen a film jack thorne has written but the fades is my everything. and i've loved other things he's been a part of, like TIE '86 and '88 and (parts of) skins, but i don't know about this...
miss_pants 27th-Feb-2014 05:54 am (UTC)
I just watched TIE for my secret boyfriend in your icon.

i love that man and his body of work, good and bad. he's such a great actor

aw get it, carrotbum
wauwy 27th-Feb-2014 04:48 am (UTC)
Wait, JGL is actually going to BE the Sandman?

endingonfire 27th-Feb-2014 04:49 am (UTC)
I would rather see JGL as Desire or another character. He doesn't have the gravitas to play Morpheus imo.
comalies 27th-Feb-2014 05:16 am (UTC)
He doesn't have the gravitas to play a paper bag.
wauwy 27th-Feb-2014 11:09 am (UTC)
DESIRE? really??

he's not pretty enough anymore, sry2say.
endingonfire 27th-Feb-2014 06:24 pm (UTC)
I'm being generous. He's gonna cast himself as someone important and I'd rather it be Desire than Dream. Hopefully he'll develop some sense and keep away from the Endless casting or just stick to behind the scenes... not holding my breath though.
akasha6915 28th-Feb-2014 08:14 am (UTC)
He has never been pretty enough to play desire.

It would have to be like a young Leo or Johnny Depp, or possibly Rooney Marr now. Trying to think of another woman who would work well, since Desire could be played by any gender.
agatharuncible 27th-Feb-2014 01:31 pm (UTC)
Desire, really? Desire would require someone more androgynous, and they also look nothing alike.

JGL can play Despair or something
breadprincess 27th-Feb-2014 04:50 am (UTC)

EDIT: Wait, less excited at the thought of JGL being Morpheus, I'm super iffy about that

I hope that they make this a mullet-free adaptation, though

rainstormraider 27th-Feb-2014 04:52 am (UTC)
Sandman, as in Neil Gaiman's Sandman?
Why isn't Neil penning it?
breadprincess 27th-Feb-2014 04:53 am (UTC)
yeah, I'm also confused about that
rainstormraider 27th-Feb-2014 04:57 am (UTC)
I mean the dude is alive and kicking. Should've given it to him.
saintssin 27th-Feb-2014 05:01 am (UTC)
I don't think most writers end up penning adaptations of their work.
stillglows 27th-Feb-2014 05:32 am (UTC)
he's working on a script for american gods right now, so maybe that's why?

i really don't like the idea of anyone else adapting his work, i don't really like any of the adaptations that have been done already (the only thing i really liked about coraline was the animation which was beautiful and robert de niro was the best thing about stardust imo).
dull_and_wicked 27th-Feb-2014 05:01 am (UTC)
Goyer though…

tx5mym5 27th-Feb-2014 05:36 am (UTC)

I don't need a darkNgrim Sandman.
wauwy 27th-Feb-2014 11:12 am (UTC)
WB needs to drop that flop. DO THE FLOPDROP.

mte. You just know they'll fuck this up.
whiskybars 27th-Feb-2014 05:13 am (UTC)
this casting is fucking atrocious lmao
comalies 27th-Feb-2014 05:15 am (UTC)
I'm almost done with the Sandman series, I just have The Wake left to read. This is going to be a disaster, who thought that basic bitch JGL would possibly be a good idea?
greenfairy_87 27th-Feb-2014 05:15 am (UTC)
Not even saying this as a thirsty fangirl, I can't think of a better Dream than Tom Hiddleston, and after seeing OLLA, I think Mia Wasikowska would be a pretty good Death.
zoaster_toaster 27th-Feb-2014 05:21 am (UTC)
JGL as Sandman? Really?

title or description
greenfairy_87 27th-Feb-2014 06:22 am (UTC)
Ideal Dream right there
palepuss 27th-Feb-2014 12:34 pm (UTC)
Amen to that.
