Nail Polish Post! Nail Polish Trends in Katy Perry's Dark Horse

Katy Perry just premiered her latest video, Dark Horse! and along with the crazy beautiful makeup, she also had beautiful trendy nails to match. Here's the 3 Nail Polish looks that Katy Perry uses in her Dark Horse video!

1. Outline Nails (or Border Nails)

2. Striped Nails

3. Hieroglyphics Nails

Katy Perry most likely used pre-painted press on nails. The reason for this is that often music videos are shot in its entirety in one night-that can be up to 14-18 hours of straight shooting. As a result, it is much more convenient to have pre-painted press on nails which can be easily removed. You can tell that they are press on in the 2nd screenshot (stripped nails). You can
do a similar look by buying blank press on nails to do your artwork. Press on nails can be purchased at any beauty salon store or online such as Amazon (you can always paint over french manicure press on nails, as long as you use a thick
coat). However, the work can be easily done with a little time and patience on your own natural nails.

You can watch the video in its entirety here:

this video was a mess
aquaricom 24th-Feb-2014 12:11 am (UTC)
right? it was close to being kind of cohesive, but in the end the trying to stay funny and California Gurls/Friday lightheartedness is like....why??
turbotastic 24th-Feb-2014 12:39 am (UTC)
*this video is iconic
zoaster_toaster 24th-Feb-2014 12:58 am (UTC)
IKR it was a whole new level of tacky for a really shit song.

She should have done something like what she did for the Grammy's or whatever that witchy performance was for. It would have been so much better and made so much sense.
ty 24th-Feb-2014 03:54 am (UTC)
Your bitterness is sweet.

Now I cannot wait for the mess that will be Gaga. You will eat your words right back
lady_gaga 24th-Feb-2014 04:40 am (UTC)
yes! because if gaga's video is a mess, that will automatically make katy's video less messy.

so logical
beatofmy_drum 24th-Feb-2014 03:23 pm (UTC)
ugh i love this song and the video could have been iconic for her.

but she's been acting more foolish than ever.
which sucks because i was starting to like her when Prism came out.

I really want to get some of Zoya's new spring colors but idk if I trust buying nail polish from the internet. The Ulta by me doesn't seem to get much Zoya in. :(
bombfrostings 24th-Feb-2014 12:06 am (UTC)
I buy nail polish online all the time and never had a problem.
bienegold 24th-Feb-2014 12:07 am (UTC)
Order spoons if you're not sure of the color!

Or wait for a sale. Zoya is one of my favorite brands, but I refuse to pay full price for them, haha.

That said, I've never *really* been disappointed in a Zoya polish and I have a bunch of them. (Except for Pippa, but yellow creams are always terrible.)
lowlighter 24th-Feb-2014 12:13 am (UTC)
I've bought a lot of Zoya online (I usually wait until there's a sale - they just did a buy 3/get 3 not that long ago) and have had really good luck with buying them there. I'll read their FB page sometimes and have seen people say they got a bottle that broke while in shipment and Zoya seems pretty good about sending a replacement out, if that's something you're worried about.

I've had really good luck out of Zoya polishes though! It's probably my favorite brand right now.
myrasis 24th-Feb-2014 12:16 am (UTC)
what do you mean by not being able to trust buying polish online? if you mean not being able to see the colour in real life, well there's literally hundreds of nail polish blogs out there and you can easily find swatches of the collection on them, especially a big brand like zoya.
crucified 24th-Feb-2014 12:25 am (UTC)
It's not that at all, I love Zoya's nail polish and I trust the colors, I'm just afraid of the bottle breaking when it gets mailed out. I live in an apartment and sometimes the mail person here is pretty careless with stuff.
jessieka 24th-Feb-2014 12:18 am (UTC)
i really want the new zoya pixie dust colors..
12dozenroses 24th-Feb-2014 12:20 am (UTC)
Zoya is so so so so great!
redleigh86 24th-Feb-2014 12:20 am (UTC)
if a local shop doesn't have them I always just google the brand + color and look at google images because usually there's some blogger who's used it and reviewed it, and it provides a better idea of color and such. Overall though Zoya is pretty awesome. I'd say half my polish collection is Zoya because I always take advantage of their bogo email offers. I love the pixie dust collection especially but I'm crazy for matte glitter lol
francesbcobain 24th-Feb-2014 12:33 am (UTC)
I bought tons of nail polish from Sephora and Amazon and I've never had a problem.
endlessness 24th-Feb-2014 12:47 am (UTC)
I buy from Zoya's website every now and then and they always put tons of bubble wrap etc in the box.
deargirl 24th-Feb-2014 01:24 am (UTC)
Zoya is awesome, I've only ever ordered them online (usually when they have a good sale or free shipping deal), and I've always been happy with my purchase/never had any issues.

nastymommybitch 24th-Feb-2014 01:58 am (UTC)
order from zoya's website. they always have some sort of free gift or discount. waiting on mine right now.
raunchyb 24th-Feb-2014 03:37 am (UTC)
I want some of the new OPI but I don't know if I trust buying on Amazon marketplace... How do I know it's the real stuff? It seems like it could be faked.
bienegold 24th-Feb-2014 12:04 am (UTC)
I'd like to do more interesting manicures, but I keep my nails just short enough that it just doesn't look right to have any kind of design on them.
onnawufei 24th-Feb-2014 12:46 am (UTC)
Do nail stamping. My favorite part about having short nails is how much easier it is to stamp them with an all over design.
12dozenroses 24th-Feb-2014 06:35 am (UTC)
Where do you find your stamps? I've never tried it but I'm looking to get into it a bit.
agatharuncible 24th-Feb-2014 03:14 am (UTC)
same. plus I feel like they always end up looking so ott and I'm picky so idk what I'd do.
libre_m 24th-Feb-2014 07:37 am (UTC)
Feature nail? I usually like a block colour and one glittery nail per hand.

bombfrostings 24th-Feb-2014 12:05 am (UTC)
I need nail hardening recs. everytime they grow long they're soft and break. I've pretty much tried anything made by sally Hansen and I've been taking biotin for over a year.
dannyupshaw 24th-Feb-2014 12:10 am (UTC)
I'd say it's stress or some other long-term negative emotion
tx5mym5 24th-Feb-2014 12:55 am (UTC)
I have the same problem, but it's not stress for me.
robintheshrew 24th-Feb-2014 01:35 am (UTC)
Ugh, really? Nearly every health problem I have stems from my stress >.
laughing_wild 24th-Feb-2014 12:17 am (UTC)
I have super soft nails (they don't even break, they just bend backwards excruciatingly) and I've been using OPI's Nail Envy with pretty decent results.
jessieka 24th-Feb-2014 12:19 am (UTC)
i got butter london horse power nail fertilizer and it works really well. as soon as i stop using it they start breaking again but it does work if you use it.
nefertitii 24th-Feb-2014 12:53 am (UTC)
I have the same problem. I started using gloves while doing the dishes, taking biotin and giving my nails a breather from nail polish every once in a while.

they still break and chip away in layers. whenever I put argan oil on my fingers/nails and massage them in, they get quite strong. they start breaking off again whenever I get lazy and don't use the argan oil.

just buy a bottle of pure argan oil from amazon.

Try this, bb!

I've been on biotin for years and still have ridiculously weak nails that bend/break/peel/suck until I started using formula 2.
coreycoreycorey 24th-Feb-2014 02:38 am (UTC)
This sounds really weird but I have always had super soft nails until I went on this craazy carrot binge and ate like tons of them all of the time for snacks, also drank a ton of water and my nails were the best they have ever been. I stopped doing both of those and they went back to shit.
pinkolove 24th-Feb-2014 02:38 am (UTC)
Late, but I bought OPI's Nail Envy and have been using it for about a month and my nails haven't broke since.
nekkichi 24th-Feb-2014 02:47 am (UTC)
you might want to try a calcium + d3 formula for a couple weeks and see it helps (it should make difference within a week, since nails are really fast growing)
biotin can only accelerate hair/nail growth, it won't make them stronger if you're deficient in calcium.
misscrystal 24th-Feb-2014 05:52 am (UTC)
Nailtiques!
I have super soft nails that literally split and chip if I pick something up the wrong way or hit them against a hard surface. Tried all the Sally Hansen Hard-As-Nails over the years and they didn't do jack. Orly Daily Defense actually made my nails crumble and split like crazy. Nailtiques is what I used to fix the damage.

Orly DD damage vs one month of Nailtiques formula 2+ (sorry big pic):

I'm now using formula 2 for maintenance. I always keep a coat on my nails, either alone or as base for color. It works beautifully as a top coat, too.
ologist 24th-Feb-2014 08:06 am (UTC)
To be honest after trying every product on the market I gave up, cut them short, and didn't paint them until they had regrown from root to tip. Worked like a charm.
uncletam 24th-Feb-2014 12:05 am (UTC)
Meh, seen these all on Pinterest 800 years ago. Yay for a np post to pass the time till TWD though!

i'm obsessed with nail polish and keeping my nails on point but i just can't get into nail art

Same here. When I see women with nail art, I imagine that they're all unemployed or something. Even the most menial office work is going to destroy intricate nail art.
nalaa1906 24th-Feb-2014 12:15 am (UTC)
same
barnabys_bane 24th-Feb-2014 12:16 am (UTC)
Same. I've seen very few examples of nail art where I've actually liked it.
stellar_ball 24th-Feb-2014 12:18 am (UTC)
Same. I used to sometimes do an "accent" nail like put glittery polish or a slightly different shade on my ring finger.
emilycup 24th-Feb-2014 12:23 am (UTC)
same, partly bc I'm not coordinated enough but also it just looks so bad so quickly...
endlessness 24th-Feb-2014 12:54 am (UTC)
Same. I feel like it could be cute on special occasions, but I wouldn't want to walk around like that.
nastymommybitch 24th-Feb-2014 02:02 am (UTC)
i like polishes that are all in one. i don't like nail art either. takes too much time and is usually a tad bit too tacky or twee for me.
agatharuncible 24th-Feb-2014 03:16 am (UTC)
same tbh, I always feel like most end up looking over the top or tacky or just plain not my style.

All-around beauty post?

Are facial masques worth it? People always talk about "rejuvenating" and all that, but I'm not interested in just temporarily drying out my skin.
dannyupshaw 24th-Feb-2014 12:09 am (UTC)
? so what are you interested in
h0tfuss 24th-Feb-2014 12:11 am (UTC)
Sometimes it's good to "shock" the skin with a new product to get the residue and grime that your regular cleanser isn't getting. I'd rather use a masque once in a while than switch between whole bottles of cleanser and do that kind of trial and error. But I don't want to use a masque if it's all just a bunch of fancy words to mean that it's only going to be drying.
