'The Musketeers' will return for Series 2

BBC One has commissioned a second series of The Musketeers, after only three episodes of the first series have aired.

Inspired by Alexandre Dumas’s legendary characters, the ten-part adventure drama series launched last month, with the first three episodes averaging 6.3 million viewers in the overnight ratings and a consolidated audience of 9.3 million for the opening episode.

All four of the main cast - Luke Pasqualino (Skins) as D’Artagnan, Santiago Cabrera (Merlin) as Aramis, Tom Burke (The Hour) as Athos, Howard Charles as Porthos - will return in Series 2.

Peter Capaldi is not expected to return as Cardinal Richelieu, with the actor now filming Series 8 of Doctor Who.

Charlotte Moore, Controller BBC One commented: "Drama in 2014 has got off to a great start on BBC One and The Musketeers has really brought something fresh and new to the channel. I can't wait to see how things will develop in the next series."

Creator Adrian Hodges added: "I'm completely thrilled to be able to continue the journey we have begun on The Musketeers. Writing and helping produce the show has been one of the greatest challenges and joys of my professional life."
