'Arrow' producers open up about THAT twist, tease Suicide Squad

Arrow producers promised that they’d put their own twist on Nyssa al Ghul, and boy, did they deliver.

In the episode that aired Wednesday night, which saw Sara (Caity Lotz) return to Starling City to check on spiraling Laurel (Katie Cassidy), not only did we get to see the first TV version of Ra’s al Ghul’s daughter, but the show revealed that in their world, Sara and Nyssa (Katrina Law) were in a romantic relationship. And as the producers revealed in a Q&A with reporters, it was a secret they worked very hard to protect.

“Really, for spoilers, because the [casting] sides always make it out to the Internet, we made up fake sides for Nyssa because we didn’t want to spoil the fact [that she had been in a relationship with Sara],” producer Marc Guggenheim revealed. In fact, they renamed the character and in the fake script sides, stuck the character opposite Oliver Queen. “So we narrowed it down to Katrina and this other actress, and we brought them both back for chemistry reads with Caity Lotz and said, ‘Oh, by the way, she’s gay. And oh, by the way, it’s Nyssa al Ghul.’”

The decision to make the character gay, however, was mostly a result of the writers’ efforts to illuminate Sara’s backstory, said EP Andrew Kreisberg. “It was really more about Sara than anything else,” he said. “And, by the way, we thought of this at the beginning of the season. If you watch 2.05, there’s a reference to ‘the beloved and you think that’s going to keep you safe.’ And we talked about, ‘Well, does Ra’s al Ghul have a son?’ Then we were like, ‘Could it be Talia?’ Then we felt like Talia had just been done in the [Dark Knight] movies. And one of our writers had actually brought up the idea of Nyssa. And it just felt like something new and different.”

Additionally, said Kreisberg, they loved the other functions such a twist would serve — like “the idea that Sara found herself in this terrible world and found this one person who treated her with love and kindness,” and the effect it would have on her other interpersonal relationships. “For [Det.] Lance — this hardened, tough cop who’s probably not the most progressive guy — that he was like, ‘I’m just glad you had somebody who loved you and took care of you in those nightmare years,’ those moments felt like they would be special and play for us.”

Guggenheim added, though, that throughout the process, they avoided labeling Sara’s sexuality — especially considering that at the end of the episode, she sleeps with Oliver. “We actually specifically avoid using the term bisexual. We didn’t want to label her at all. [We wanted to] let her be her own person,” he said. “If the audience wants to label, fine. But we wanted to not make it like it’s that specific, because it is a very specific relationship to Sara and Nyssa. And maybe Sara has had other female relationships, but we’ll get to that in due course when it’s right, if it’s right. But we wanted to not just do something to shock.”

The pair also revealed a heap of information about what’s coming up next for Oliver and Co. Below are the best scoops:

On Sara’s time in Starling: “As far as Sara, part of the reason we did this episode was so that we could free Sara for the time being from the League of Assassins and allow her to fully be the Black Canary and come home and all the delicious implications that that brought,” says Kreisberg, who added that we will continue to see varied reactions to Sara’s full-time return. “You’re really going to see how Sara’s return affects everybody and, I think, hopefully so far people will be surprised by the reaction.”

On the possibility of seeing Ra’s al Ghul: While the producers hesitated to speak much about the chances of viewers seeing Ra’s al Ghul this season, Kreisberg said it was important to remember how the show has always approached their storytelling: Plant the seeds and watch them grow. “We’ve thought of the show as this multi-year epic arc, and things get produced and paid off later — and this is one of those epic things that is being introduced now.” Meanwhile, Arrow‘s third season remains unofficial — but, let’s be real, it’s happening.

On “Villains A-Go-Go”: Episodes 14-18 of this season will be “great, big villains one after another,” teased Kreisberg. “You’re going to see a couple of returning favorites and a couple of amazing new ones.” Guggenheim added that episode 18 will act as a bit of a mid-midseason finale as the show will be off the air for a few weeks following its airing. And, yes, expect a cliffhanger.

On the Birds of Prey episode: While anticipation for the show’s Birds of Prey episode has built, Kreisberg warned that viewers should expect “the Arrow version of Birds of Prey [rather] than…a direct adaptation.” “We gave ourselves room to grow and evolve that. … You’re not going to end up with the holy trinity of Oracle, Black Canary, and Huntress right out of the gate,” added Guggenheim. “We’ll get there.”

On Felicity’s backstory: In Wednesday night’s episode, Felicity revealed a few nuggets from her past to Oliver in a touching speech, and at least two of the things mentioned in that monologue will be brought up again this season. “You’ll get payoff to those two things later on in the season,” says Guggenheim. And as for her relationship with Oliver, look for it to be “strengthened” after this week’s episode, in which she was the one to reveal to Oliver Moira’s big secret about Thea’s real father. “All Felicity is is the messenger here,” he says.

On episode 16, “Suicide Squad”: “Dig was our way into Amanda Waller, and in this episode, Amanda comes to Dig and Lyla…and basically recruits Dig for a mission and basically tells him that he’s going to need a team and she saddles him with the Suicide Squad, including Floyd Lawton,” teases Kreisberg. Guggenheim added that the episode will show flashbacks to Diggle’s time in Afghanistan told from his perspective. (They will revisit the story that Diggle shared last season about him saving the life of a warlord named Golam Kadir.)

Erica Durance was so great as Lois Lane.
alaynestone 6th-Feb-2014 04:25 am (UTC)
She's the reason I quit the show. Lol.

(well, aside from the fact that it became truly truly irrevocably terrible oop)
gottasecret101 6th-Feb-2014 06:23 am (UTC)
Erica Durance had an old ass face and when she smiled she looked A LOT older than Clark Kent. When she came on as Lois my ass dropped that show so fast.
kashyyyk 6th-Feb-2014 06:41 am (UTC)
wow at this erica hate, she's my fav lois.
loveuploud 6th-Feb-2014 04:07 am (UTC)
anyone else notice sara's voice was different in the flashback scenes? way less annoying than her "present" day one.
floetcist 6th-Feb-2014 04:24 am (UTC)
I think the Caty tried to do a Stephen Amell when he plays island Oliver but didn't pull it off (IMO).
bulastar 6th-Feb-2014 04:08 am (UTC)
yup, so Felicity's dad is a villain
browneyedguuurl 6th-Feb-2014 04:10 am (UTC)
Totes! Who do you think it'll be?
bulastar 6th-Feb-2014 04:11 am (UTC)
I dunno but Sportsmaster keeps coming to mind for some reason. I think it's because Felicity has a blonde ponytail like Artemis Crock
browneyedguuurl 6th-Feb-2014 04:09 am (UTC)
The Huntress actress is so awful. I dread her return. I bet Felicity will be the "Oracle" in the Birds of Prey episode. And her dad is sooo going to be a villain.
ahigheroctave 6th-Feb-2014 04:11 am (UTC)
Felicity would be such a perfect Oracle!
browneyedguuurl 6th-Feb-2014 04:13 am (UTC)
Felicity is flawless, so yes. ;)
oddbunny_dreams 6th-Feb-2014 04:21 am (UTC)
I quite like Jessica! She does crazy desperate eyes very well! (not my sole reasoning, mind you...)
loveuploud 6th-Feb-2014 04:37 am (UTC)
her accent is so distracting
chaos_organised 6th-Feb-2014 04:09 am (UTC)
this show actually any good?
sethelaezekiel 6th-Feb-2014 04:13 am (UTC)
I watched 10 episodes and gave up.
loveuploud 6th-Feb-2014 04:14 am (UTC)
the first few episodes of season one were a bit slow but it definitely picks up. season two has been really, really good
browneyedguuurl 6th-Feb-2014 04:15 am (UTC)
The first season goes from meh to okay but the second season came out swinging and hasn't stopped.
oddbunny_dreams 6th-Feb-2014 04:19 am (UTC)
I love it. This season has just raised the bar character wise, plot twists, in its humor, and the flashbacks are much more interesting.
rkt 6th-Feb-2014 04:57 am (UTC)
it's trashy. take that as you will. i watch, but not do or die.
searchtheskies 6th-Feb-2014 05:08 am (UTC)
Echoing others, but yes. It definitely takes a long time to get hooked, but suddenly I was absolutely obsessed. It's much higher quality than other CW shows that I've seen.
prophecypro 6th-Feb-2014 06:06 am (UTC)
Yes and no lol

If you're a DC fan who likes action and cameos and references its great. But I think it has bad character writing which creates caricature females and stiff overserious acting.

If you're a comic book fan or like watching shirtless men (CW after all) you'll dig it
zyuranger 6th-Feb-2014 07:21 am (UTC)
Season 2 >>>>> season 1.
markedglory 6th-Feb-2014 04:10 am (UTC)
Has Oliver hooked up with his sister yet? Because their chemistry >
ahigheroctave 6th-Feb-2014 04:12 am (UTC)
I honestly don't think Willa has very much chemistry with anyone yet.
slaughtermatic 6th-Feb-2014 04:53 am (UTC)
lol fuckin this
britneyrocks26 6th-Feb-2014 04:13 am (UTC)
People are speculating that Ivo is Felicity's father. It might be true, but I have a feeling it's something entirely different.

Edited at 2014-02-06 04:15 am (UTC)
browneyedguuurl 6th-Feb-2014 04:16 am (UTC)
I don't think it's Ivo. Oliver killed him on the island...I think the death will stick. It has to be someone we haven't seen yet.
oddbunny_dreams 6th-Feb-2014 04:17 am (UTC)
I wish Amanda Waller's physical appearance was more along the lines of the pre-New 52 Amanda Waller. You just knew to not mess with her. That being said; YAY! Suicide Squad and Diggle flashback!

Also, went back and watched the pilot with my sister this weekend (her first time); forgot about the Slade mask on the beach with an arrow through the left eye. Pretty great how the writers are planning so much in advance.

And why Nyssa was the only one who actually said it right... smh...
loveuploud 6th-Feb-2014 04:25 am (UTC)
i was so excited when she pronounced it correctly in the previews and then was really irked when she was the only one to say it correctly. why did they keep mispronouncing his name in front of his daughter even after she says it right?!
elementalranger 6th-Feb-2014 04:27 am (UTC)
omg this episode was too much. soo creepy

I love Terry so much omg. And the difference in old Bruce and medium old Bruce's voices, Kevin Conroy is a god
theshadowpuppet 6th-Feb-2014 04:22 am (UTC)
SO many characters have stuff going on, Diggle just gets pushed to the side. I'm happy he's getting his own episode
bulastar 6th-Feb-2014 04:26 am (UTC)
srsly I keep forgetting he exists until he shows up for 10 seconds to tell Oliver to watch the news.
mundodeamor 6th-Feb-2014 09:38 am (UTC)
omg lol @ ''until he shows up for 10 seconds to tell Oliver to watch the new''

now that you mention it, he really does that often, haha
loveuploud 6th-Feb-2014 04:27 am (UTC)
diggle really needs more love in episodes
noiresoul 6th-Feb-2014 04:31 am (UTC)
Does anyone know if Nyssa is coming back in later episodes?
loveuploud 6th-Feb-2014 04:34 am (UTC)
i really, really hope so. she was my favorite part of tonight's episode
amber_protocol 6th-Feb-2014 09:33 am (UTC)
Pretty sure I read somewhere she'll be back. I can't remember since it was discussed at TWoP but I try to skim the future episodes talk, but I remember it being mentioned.
nrllaless 6th-Feb-2014 07:43 pm (UTC)
Yeah, she's returning in at least one more ep this season.
loveuploud 6th-Feb-2014 04:41 am (UTC)
this scene was everything

arnaudian 6th-Feb-2014 04:51 am (UTC)
nyssa was so cool why can't she become a regular :(
amber_protocol 6th-Feb-2014 09:34 am (UTC)
Fucking seriously. The action in that scene seemed to be a level above what the show normally does, I was sitting there flailing over how amazing it was.
angelnene 6th-Feb-2014 10:41 am (UTC)
I loooove Katrina Law, what a woman ♥
cassandralee711 6th-Feb-2014 04:51 am (UTC)
I haven't watched this. Is it worth it?

I think my love of Smallville kept me for giving this a try.
arnaudian 6th-Feb-2014 04:53 am (UTC)
its way better than smallville imo, it's more serialized and less throwaway villain of the week. also the pace is really fast, there's no waiting 200 episodes for clark to put on his suit
prophecypro 6th-Feb-2014 06:08 am (UTC)
Its more closer to Smallville than people realize, but I will give it a season or so for people to realize that.
loveuploud 6th-Feb-2014 04:54 am (UTC)
i enjoy this way more than i ever did smallville. the first season starts off slow but picks up. season two has been really great so far
searchtheskies 6th-Feb-2014 05:01 am (UTC)
This episode had so much episode. Almost too much, but I enjoyed it. I was on the edge of my seat for a lot of it.

Not sure how I feel about the Oliver/Sara thing, but at least they have actual chemistry, as opposed to Oliver/Laurel.
musnic 6th-Feb-2014 05:41 am (UTC)
It really did have so much going on. I generally watch the episodes a second time before the next one airs but man, I might rewatch this one TONIGHT. My friend is watching now and texting me along the way.
