Petition To Replace Michael Vick As Raleigh Keynote Speaker

michael-vick

Michael Vick is in the news again, but this time it is because his scheduled appearance at a North Carolina “Evening of Champions” is being protested by thousands in a petition on Change.org. Vick is scheduled as a guest speaker, and the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce’s president and CEO, Harvey Schmitt, says that although the evening is not to recognize the controversial athlete, he does have an interesting story of personal redemption that is worth hearing.

In 2009, Vick was released after serving 19 months for his personal involvement in a violent dog fighting ring, and his road to redemption has been a rocky one ever since. Animal advocates along with over 66,000 other citizens are disappointed in the choice to bring Vick in as a keynote speaker after his sordid past, claiming that having him featured as a role model for impressionable youth at an event that celebrates sportsmanship and integrity is inappropriate and disheartening.

Everyone loves a comeback story, but will Vick ever be able to redeem himself in the public eye and in the hearts of animal advocates everywhere for his past transgressions? There is no doubt that the professional football player is polarizing. Let’s hope that personal redemption is possible and that Vick’s past experiences will create some future good.

I don't understand this picture. All these kids look like cut-outs.
crazyventures 5th-Feb-2014 12:35 am (UTC)
Someone needs to go throw him in an empty pool and electrocute him tbh
scarletfbl 5th-Feb-2014 12:56 am (UTC)
a pool with water sounds more conducive to being electrocuted.
_malapropism 5th-Feb-2014 12:59 am (UTC)
and put it on youtube tbh

lulz I have an aunt who posted some thing on fb about how Tim Tebow is horribly ridiculed for being ~a good Christian family man~ while Michael Vick did all he did and got off entirely scot-free, is a beloved hero, etc. Like wat.
blowinmoneyfast 5th-Feb-2014 12:47 am (UTC)
scot free? does this person not realize he went to jail
vonlisbon 5th-Feb-2014 01:55 pm (UTC)
Or that there was an entire (or two? idr) Animal Planet series about rehabilitating his dogs, where they went into immense detail over how he mutilated them in the first place. And the fines. And he's like never allowed to own a dog again. And the Michael Vick doggie chew toys. And...

yeah, Tim Tebow def has it worse, though.
senorita__ 5th-Feb-2014 12:58 am (UTC)
definitely NOT seen as a hero. i think he was a great quarterback and i don't hate him with every fiber of my being only because he did do time and has made strides towards amending what he's done.. that said i can't ever truly forgive him because what he did is disgusting. but i am one of the only people i know who feels this way, everyone fucking HATES michael vick so idk who your aunt hangs out with
butt_or_skotch 5th-Feb-2014 01:02 am (UTC)
Um.....he went to jail. LOL. What is she on?
perznpoprietess 5th-Feb-2014 12:36 am (UTC)
hmmm, who is going to bring the numbers? the adults should know that you don't hurt/kill animals for entertainment/money ppl or the he's served his punishment, he deserves a second chance ppl?

i literally can't believe people think this piece of shit deserves any sort of extra chances. people who abuse animals, helpless, innocent animals who only want love and to be fed....those people need to die horrible deaths.
zombeats 5th-Feb-2014 10:56 pm (UTC)
Fuck no.
donatacci 5th-Feb-2014 12:42 am (UTC)
in b4 people defend him by saying he's served his time and deserves a second chance.
solsty 5th-Feb-2014 12:55 am (UTC)
Too late.
poli_jerk 5th-Feb-2014 12:44 am (UTC)
Yeah, he's never getting a second chance.
arielazul_22 5th-Feb-2014 12:45 am (UTC)
can ppl just let this the fuck go tho? he apologized, went to jail, and has truly seemed to learn the error of his ways...like what more do ppl fucking want?!

i like how it's cool to hate vick forever for fighting dogs, but woody pedophile allen is out here fucking and marrying his children and everyone turns a gd blind eye cuz ~he made a few good movies...

like get the entire fuck out of here, sf done with this bs
alethaweapon 5th-Feb-2014 12:48 am (UTC)
The things he's done to and with dogs is fucking disgusting and borderline sociopathic.

I just can't at people that say he "learned that what he was doing was wrong"
Like, if he was stealing, that's one thing but murdering dogs?! No.

donatacci 5th-Feb-2014 12:57 am (UTC)
the two aren't even comparable.

why are people not allowed to find m vick morally reprehensible because a director raped his daughter? what does that even have to do with anything?

you do realize that michael has been given a second chance, is being invited to speak at events like this, gets to play football again, is making bank and has plenty of fans who defend him despite his actions? why are you silencing the people who are trying to speak up for the animals he killed and tortued?
violue 5th-Feb-2014 01:31 am (UTC)
Are you saying that the people that have a problem with this guy are the same people that turn a blind eye to Woody Allen?

Because otherwise your comparison makes no sense.
hotfuzz85 5th-Feb-2014 03:27 am (UTC)
Stop.

Studies have shown a link between animal abuse and domestic violence. You don't think animal abuse rate above human suffering, fine. People need to stay on top of him if only for his wife and children. Think about that.

joy_scenic 5th-Feb-2014 05:23 am (UTC)
Lbr, he'd still be doing the shit if he had never gotten busted for it.

His only reason for acting like he's ~rehabilitated~ or w/e is SOLELY in an attempt to salvage and maintain a career in the NFL.

This wasn't, "oh he set up a dog fight one time".

No. He made the conscious decision at least hundreds of times to force animals to fight each other to the death for his own amusement and then killed the ones that he deemed unworthy.

What kind of person not only derives pleasure from that and actively funds and supports it?

Do you think a serial rapist, pedophile, or murderer can honestly be rehabilitated?

Why would a serial animal abuser and killer be any different?

heart_iswild 5th-Feb-2014 09:57 pm (UTC)
CAN YOU SHUT THE FUCK UP FOREVER
alethaweapon 5th-Feb-2014 12:46 am (UTC)
I'm usually all for 'if you do your time, I forgive your crime (everything but murder/rape) but not him.

Any person that can willfully hang a dog-or any living thing-to death, watch them maul each other apart, or murder them in any other fashion is a fucking MONSTER.

Edited at 2014-02-05 12:47 am (UTC)
jedimistress16 5th-Feb-2014 12:48 am (UTC)
He also smashed the heads of dogs that didn't fight well against the hard ground until they died. There is no fixing that kind of sick. And for me, there is no forgiving it.
hahahey 5th-Feb-2014 12:49 am (UTC)
I thought he wasn't personally involved and that he just provided the funds/location?
alethaweapon 5th-Feb-2014 12:49 am (UTC)
UGH I literally will get really fucking bummed if I hear the full extent of what he and other dog fighters do.

As a dog owner, and general animal-lover and appreciator, it makes me fucking sick.

NO NO a thousand times NO.

If you think this is silly, read "The Lost Dogs" by Jim Gorant.

Anybody who thinks he should be forgiven should have to look at thousands of these photos
heart_iswild 5th-Feb-2014 09:59 pm (UTC)
anybody who thinks he should be forgiven should be shoved in a pit with another human and be forced to maul each other to death. like what the fuck

I cried so hard when I read that book.

surprised at how ONTD is torn on this topic
heart_iswild 5th-Feb-2014 10:00 pm (UTC)
so vile. somehow ontd is all for human rights of every kind, which is great...but animals are SOOOOO below humans so who cares about them?
hahahey 5th-Feb-2014 12:48 am (UTC)
well I don't blame people for not being comfortable speaking tbh, I wouldn't care but I get why other people wouldn't want to hear him talk
bnlmaroonvwbug 5th-Feb-2014 12:49 am (UTC)
I remember when this first happened and he was arrested. it's been nearly 10 years I believe. I think it's time to give the man a break. I don't condone dog fighting but at least that's all he was doing. he didn't murder anyone or molest kids. having him talk about what he's struggled with might send a positive message to the kids in attendance.

*waits patiently for everyone on ontd to attack using what they consider to be snarky comments because she isn't thinking about the poor dogs and their emotional grief*
fatbom 5th-Feb-2014 12:52 am (UTC)
poor dogs and their emotional grief? it sounds like you dont know how the dog fighting business works
bienenkiste "didn't murder anyone or molest kids"5th-Feb-2014 12:56 am (UTC)
he still engaged in/condoned extremely violent behaviour though
the fact that it wasn't towards humans doesn't make it less disgusting

donatacci 5th-Feb-2014 12:59 am (UTC)
are you implying that dogs don't have emotions? or that we just shouldn't care about their emotions because they can't vocalize them in a language that we speak? i'm just wondering if you're ignorant or just insensitive.
meranii_raushu 5th-Feb-2014 01:55 am (UTC)
I'm embarrassed that you're sayig this with a Dean & kittens icon, sheesh.

You're arguing that what he did wasn't as bad as murdering a person, which is true, but also completely irrelevant to the issue at hand. He didn't struggle with something that he overcame to now send a positive message about, he viciously tortured many living beings for money while already being rich as shit, and he only stopped when the whole thing blew up, not because he had some change of heart.

Brett Favre isn't bad like Roethlisberger? I thought he only sent dick pics?
blowinmoneyfast 5th-Feb-2014 01:31 am (UTC)
it was more than just the dickpicks, he sent these 2 massage therapists for the jets some texts and there was a sexual harrasment lawsuit, where the women lost their jobs for saying something, so yeah he wasn't like assaulting women in a bathroom but he's still a pig
djtino224 5th-Feb-2014 01:30 am (UTC)
I dislike Vick AND Roethisberger immensely. They're both scum.

Favre is gross, too.
