Harriet Tubman Google Doodle Honors Black History Month

Today’s Google Doodle depicts American abolitionist and Underground Railroad conductor Harriet Tubman (c.1820-1913) in honor of the first day of Black History Month.

Born a slave in Maryland, Tubman worked as a maid, nurse, and cook before she left her family and fled to Philadelphia in 1849. In Dec. 1850, she returned to Maryland to help her sister and two children escape to freedom. For the next decade, she became the best-known conductor of the Underground Railroad, a secret network that helped fugitive slaves in the South reach safety in Northern free states or in Canada.

Tubman often dressed the escapees in disguises, according to the National Women’s History Museum: ”If it was announced that a group of male slaves had bolted from a plantation, she dressed the fugitives as women for the trip north.” Her dedication earned her the nickname “Moses.”

The abolitionist heroine went on to serve as a spy for the Union Army during the Civil War. She would pretend to be an old, frail woman and wander around towns under Confederate control to get clues about the whereabouts of troops and supplies. In the last part of her career, she campaigned for women’s suffrage.

In March 2013, President Barack Obama signed a proclamation to establish the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Monument, and a state park is expected to open in Maryland in 2015.

it would be awesome if they did a different black historical figure everyday for the month, and not just the "well-known" ones either...the masses need serious education.

hdu suggest that social/political movements are anything but the sporadic, totally random efforts of one or two major individuals!
katiefitch 1st-Feb-2014 08:12 pm (UTC)
I really want to do the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad trail this summer
It starts like 40 mins from my parents house and is supposed to be super interesting
astrofisica 1st-Feb-2014 08:12 pm (UTC)
This is great, but let the month of white guilt and ignorance begin. Who will write the first "article" about Twitter searching "Why is there no white history month"? Gawker?
tiny_winey87 1st-Feb-2014 08:16 pm (UTC)
now sis, what makes you think because it's black history month that white guilt and ignorance would even stop lol. :P smh you know it's 24/7/365 !
astrofisica 1st-Feb-2014 08:19 pm (UTC)
Nah, that's not what I'm saying. I don't expect it to stop. That shit is everlasting, but White guilt and ignorance is especially highlighted in February, because white people really can't handle the idea of discussing black history through the eyes of black folks for twenty-eight or -nine days. So, instead, we get think pieces on the shady shit white ppl do "in celebration."
randommakings 1st-Feb-2014 08:16 pm (UTC)
Oh man, I didn't even think about the fact that I'm going to have to deal with that shit all month.
_quietriot_ 1st-Feb-2014 10:12 pm (UTC)
lol, true.
vonlisbon 1st-Feb-2014 11:48 pm (UTC)
I legit get scared when I think of how much of my daily life and my actual career depends upon Google. Like I would straight up not have a job if Google up and decided to get rid of/disallow the free use of their mapping program tomorrow.
randommakings 1st-Feb-2014 08:15 pm (UTC)
Why haven't they made one of those big deal blockbuster, LETS GET OURSELF AN OSCAR movies about her? She totally seems like she'd be a perfect subject.
lestat 1st-Feb-2014 08:16 pm (UTC)
considering how the nina simone movie is going, i'm happy to wait for someone competent to do it.
itscomicrelief 1st-Feb-2014 08:19 pm (UTC)
They'll cast Paula Patton and somehow let Benedict Cumberbatch play her slavemaster/lover
espressotorte 1st-Feb-2014 08:19 pm (UTC)
lmao.
lestat 1st-Feb-2014 08:20 pm (UTC)
NOOOO
itscomicrelief 1st-Feb-2014 08:21 pm (UTC)
Oh, and they'll somehow attribute the creation underground railroad to Benedict Cumberbatch's character.
randommakings 1st-Feb-2014 08:22 pm (UTC)
Don't even say shit like that, you'll put it out there
snapiphany 1st-Feb-2014 08:28 pm (UTC)
No way.

Meryl Streep, most likely.
chomsky 1st-Feb-2014 08:19 pm (UTC)
lmao yeah we the public would probably be totally down for a movie about harriet tubman but the racist misogynists running hollywood would have to be seriously coerced to back a movie about a black woman.
skyler_white_yo bad joke.1st-Feb-2014 08:22 pm (UTC)
They are waiting for Benedict Cumberbatch to become available.
waffled_flambe 1st-Feb-2014 09:29 pm (UTC)
I feel that if she was a white man Hollywood would've already made like 5 different biopics about her story
juliette666 1st-Feb-2014 09:58 pm (UTC)
There is a TV movie from 1978 about her starring Cicely Tyson. I was excited to watch it and rented it from Netflix, but I don't think it's very good. I wonder if there are any projects about her in development.
shad0wdr3am3r 1st-Feb-2014 08:17 pm (UTC)
Black history month is always the most racist month of the year! It's like a clarion call for racists and dumbfucks to start showing their asses. So I think I'm just gonna sit this one out cuz after everything that happened last year, I can't handle any more of it.
kwikimart 3rd-Feb-2014 03:06 pm (UTC)
Ikr?!

I'm just pre-emptively blocking/hiding all the white people I know on my FB because I REFUSE to tolerate them this month
hope120 1st-Feb-2014 08:17 pm (UTC)
everyone on my timeline is trying to out-outrage each other... you know if they had ignored the date the criticism would be worse.
espressotorte 1st-Feb-2014 08:20 pm (UTC)
People on FB are outraged over this? Why am I not shocked
letmebee 1st-Feb-2014 08:31 pm (UTC)
Why are you even friends with these people?
hope120 1st-Feb-2014 08:38 pm (UTC)
they're acquaintances... to clarify, they're outraged bc they think google is appropriating her image, not because they're crazy racists
soavantgarde 1st-Feb-2014 08:36 pm (UTC)
why are you friends with ignorant twats? [2]
mhfromnh 1st-Feb-2014 08:18 pm (UTC)

Getting ready for the #ffffffuckery.
reasontorhyme 1st-Feb-2014 08:21 pm (UTC)
This is wonderful.
I am going to have to brace myself for the ~think pieces and the ~thought catalogs or whatever the fuck else for people who will inevitably show their ignorant asses this month.
chomsky 1st-Feb-2014 08:22 pm (UTC)
Harriet Tubman, besides being a boss female abolitionist, will always remind me of the Addy books from American Girl and the little girl who was named after her who was a straight up BITCH to Addy but who Addy beat in the spelling bee even though she was illiterate three months before.

/csb
lady_leia_solo 1st-Feb-2014 08:31 pm (UTC)
Lmao I loved those books as a kid. I want to get them for my niece.
chomsky 1st-Feb-2014 09:02 pm (UTC)
I'm pretty sure American Girl books and the SECTIONS IN THE BACK about real history were the best things to ever happen to me as a kid. I still have my Addy doll at my mom's house...I kind of hope I get to pass her down to someone.
sassandthecity 1st-Feb-2014 08:40 pm (UTC)
I remember this! I still have those books. I always appreciate my parents for buying them for me even though I was a boy.
msloserrific 1st-Feb-2014 08:56 pm (UTC)
I loooved Addy. I still wish they had a non-slave American Girl doll though. Like Harlem Renaissance or Civil Rights Movement.
squirrelsarerad 1st-Feb-2014 09:08 pm (UTC)
Addy was my favorite AG. I had all her books.
piratesswoop 1st-Feb-2014 10:31 pm (UTC)
