LOL @ having room for Léa Sedusty in best actress but not Adele
onesilkstocking 1st-Feb-2014 02:37 am (UTC)
Golshifteh is hardly a newcomer tho. w/e I'm just glad she's getting attention.

also, what qualifies someone for the promising category vs. just being in the regular acting awards categories because I thought for sure Adele E. would be nominated for best actress but she's in the promising category instead.

and bow @ Mads getting a nomination.
wheresandrae 1st-Feb-2014 02:43 am (UTC)
I'm not sure anything says they can't qualify in both? INJUSTICE TBH

Mads was so good in Michael Kohlhaas
ms_mmelissa 1st-Feb-2014 02:45 am (UTC)
Apparently after Tahir Rahim won for both they made up a rule where you could only be nommed in 1 category for 1 performance.
wheresandrae 1st-Feb-2014 02:54 am (UTC)
How shitty that she's obviously relegated to newcomer :/
ms_mmelissa 1st-Feb-2014 02:58 am (UTC)
I think it’s dumb, they should just bump her up to actress and it makes no sense to have Lea in lead, but whatever.
whiskybars 1st-Feb-2014 02:45 am (UTC)
ugh it's such bullshit that adele keeps getting these best newcomers noms instead of getting in the best actress category when her performance was the best one of the year. i'm still side-eyeing the bafta people for picking léa who's been around for ages instead of her tbh
ava_adore0 1st-Feb-2014 03:19 am (UTC)
it's prob better for her to get those newcomer/young actor wins in more north america/uk-centric award ceremonies, bc even if she got best actress nominations, she'd never win them.
i've been trying to work out the bafta rising star thing, and based on previous nominees/winners i think they take teh 'rising star' part very literally. lea's got a few films under the belt and some notable upcoming projects, and she's worked more in english language films whereas adele has a small resume that's exclusively french work. if you take it as quite literally a rising celebrity rather than a breakout talent, lea's a more obvious choice than adele.

eta: rising star is a mess anyways tho. they nominated sienna miller in 2008, 4 years after her breakout and after she has pretty much peaked and was starting to fade.
but confirming my "rising star" not "breakthrough talent" theory, they gave it to kristen stewart over carey mulligan the exact same year carey won best actress so i don't think performances really have anything to do with it.

Léa also has an agent in the UK. I don't like thinking that such things matter but I'm afraid they do, otherwise Adèle should definitely be nominated for rising star. As much as I adore Léa, Adèle has been the biggest surprise this year, she's blown everyone away.

All the awards to Blue Is The Warmest Color. Favorite movie of 2013 hands down. Adele and Lea were incredible. Ugh, I want to cry all over again.
whiskybars 1st-Feb-2014 02:44 am (UTC)
rooting for stranger by the lake and blue is the warmest color.

marine does not deserve that nomination imo

but yAASSSS @ the mads nom even though that movie was a boring nonsense <3
wheresandrae 1st-Feb-2014 02:55 am (UTC)
Michael Kohlhaas was amazing hdu

IA though I'm rooting for Blue and Stranger

omg i thought it was very pretty to look at (mads specially never looked hotter to me tbqh) but just so dull.

but that can be bc i was really tired as i had seen two other films that day. i'll probably get around to it and give it another chance one day.
kairoso 1st-Feb-2014 02:45 am (UTC)
loved this film... i love adele too. i wonder if she'll crossover to do hollywood films?
wheresandrae 1st-Feb-2014 02:57 am (UTC)
She was in Matt Porterfield's movie I saw when it played here, but had a tiny tiny role (def not Hollywood and idk how many theaters outside of MD it played). I doubt she'll have a Marion-style crossover, but Marion is working within Hollywood and international auteurs so it'd be pretty sweet if she did.
it_llbeyourname 1st-Feb-2014 04:12 am (UTC)
but marion is so bad every time she does a hollywood film...
wheresandrae 1st-Feb-2014 04:26 am (UTC)
No, you're right. I don't want Adele to move to Hollywood. I want her to work with auteurs w/o having to do Nolan movies lol
doimoveyou 1st-Feb-2014 03:16 am (UTC)
She doesn't seem hungry enough for that imo. She doesn't have much lined up.

wheresandrae 1st-Feb-2014 03:20 am (UTC)
in retrospect, that's a good thing imo
adlanth 1st-Feb-2014 02:48 am (UTC)
Oops, only saw Michael Kohlhaas (though I'd really like to see Blue is the warmest colour at some point). Which wasn't necessarily all that great but it did have nice cinematography and sound though, I thought?

Is the Aya de Yopougon film good? I liked the books...
it_llbeyourname 1st-Feb-2014 04:11 am (UTC)
golshifteh is not a newcomer?! she is so beautiful though.
also the best newcomer award is such crap, adele exharchopolous deserves to be nominated properly for best actress. and lea shouldn't be nominated at all. she took a back seat in this film and just played herself but 40% less femme. whatever.

I've been looking for Jimmy P everywhere but can't find it & I missed it when it was playing in nyc
wheresandrae 1st-Feb-2014 04:24 am (UTC)
Its on my private torrent sites, I'm sure its on piratebay and kickass.to
supertex 1st-Feb-2014 04:25 am (UTC)
why didn't they nominate léa for best supporting actress and adèle for best actress??? le sigh.
fabouluz 1st-Feb-2014 09:51 am (UTC)
Yay Mads
joba_grota 1st-Feb-2014 11:19 am (UTC)

Aww little Adele
zakara 1st-Feb-2014 01:04 pm (UTC)
Mads is receiving all the awards this year, but he's so deserving, so yessss.
prophecypro 1st-Feb-2014 08:04 pm (UTC)
I would have figured Lea would get a nomination
merel_93 1st-Feb-2014 09:26 pm (UTC)
I'm not surprised Léa and Adele are both nominated because they absolutely deserve it but I would have thought Léa would be in supporting and Adele in lead
flirflir 4th-Feb-2014 04:40 am (UTC)
I love both but smh, Adele should be in the best actress category and lea in the supporting one

Rooting for bitwc, strangers by the lake and the past
