Rebel Wilson Starts 2014 Off Right

Scoring her second great role of the new year, Rebel Wilson will play the sharp-tongued roommate of Amanda Seyfried’s character in the Jake Szymanski-directed He’s F-ing Perfect, based on the script by Lauryn Kahn that will be produced by Gary Sanchez. Seyfried will play a social media-savvy girl who is pessimistic about love and vets her friends’ dates to find flaws. When that process leads her to uncover the perfect guy, she decides to use her Internet research skills to turn herself into his perfect match. Wilson landed a part that a lot of actresses chased, and it comes after Wilson landed a showy role as the night guard at a London museum that is the setting for the Shawl Levy-directed Night At The Museum 3.

It is nice to see Wilson flourish by being herself after winning turns in the films Bachelorette and especially the sleeper hit Pitch Perfect. You’d like to think that Hollywood can create role models of all shapes and sizes for young women, but it is difficult. I felt badly for Melissa McCarthy when Rex Reed made nasty reference to her weight in Identity Thief, because she is undoubtedly the most gifted physical comedienne working today. There has been a lot of back and forth about the reception given to actresses who are not anorexic supermodels, and it most recently flared up when Lena Dunham, Judd Apatow and others on the show took offense at TCA to a question of why the show creator/star was nude so often onscreen. I don’t think the questioner, Wrap’s Tim Molloy, was trying to do more than prod a discussion, but let’s face it, that’s likely not a question he would ask Margot Robbie at the junket for The Wolf Of Wall Street. Apatow was right to respond with a person critique because it was the equivalent of asking a woman how much she weighs. It takes incredible courage for Dunham to put vanity aside and bare herself as freely as she does. I can’t think of another young actress that brave. I am not a big fan of the show, either; I found early episodes to be demeaning to women and as a father of daughters it troubled me (though it is my oldest daughter’s favorite show and my distaste is obviously generational and proof I am fossilizing).

As for He’s F-ing Perfect, this comedy has shaped up nicely since it was bought by Fox 2000 in a $1 million-against-$1.5 million deal, at a time when Emma Stone was being eyed. The project stalled there, but Universal picked it up and gave it second life. Kahn is Adam McKay’s former assistant, and Szymanski got the job after helming some of the best comic spots for Gary Sanchez’s website Funny Or Die. The film will be produced by Gary Sanchez’s McKay and Will Ferrell and Kevin Messick with Good Universe also producing.

odontv 24th-Jan-2014 08:31 pm (UTC)
Don't trash Night At The Museum those movies are my shit.
spiral_mystik 24th-Jan-2014 08:37 pm (UTC)
The first was fun. The second was pure shit.
odontv 24th-Jan-2014 08:40 pm (UTC)
I enjoyed it for what it was. Just a good-fun movie that I probably would have watched over and over and over again if it'd been around when I was like 6-years-old and I wouldn't have cared if it didn't make sense or wasn't as good as the first one because I'm 6 and don't hate life enough to try to pick holes in goddamn Night At The Museum 2. So that's how I judge it.
hewontgo 24th-Jan-2014 08:30 pm (UTC)
amanda really could have had a bigger career
ballsmazig 24th-Jan-2014 08:38 pm (UTC)
yeah I feel like she's really falling rn unless she's just filming a shit ton of new movies?
as_theykisscome 24th-Jan-2014 08:31 pm (UTC)
lol at them always casting her at the "best friend" or the "roommate"
chikntetrazzini 24th-Jan-2014 08:33 pm (UTC)
Fat chick sidekick? How novel.

amanda used to look really strange to me during the mean girls era, but she looks gorgeous in that photo

I watched bachelorette a few weeks ago and couldn't get over how terrible it was and also that it was supposed to be a comedy, because the "humor" was just beyond mean and depressing.
prismcess 24th-Jan-2014 08:35 pm (UTC)
do you not understand the concept of a dark comedy
16_bit_goddess 24th-Jan-2014 08:40 pm (UTC)
I looooove dark comedy, but this movie just missed the mark in every possible way.
prismcess 24th-Jan-2014 08:43 pm (UTC)
it's more dark than comedic, i didn't think it was the best film out there but honestly how are a bunch of skinny/bitchy/pretty girls gonna react when their fat friend gets her life together before their sloppy asses do
16_bit_goddess 24th-Jan-2014 08:52 pm (UTC)
yeah, the concept seemed promising but they really botched the execution. it started to lose me when they were legit going to take a pic of two of them wearing her dress and post it on fb (beyond unbelievable and gross even for the bitchiest of girls...). I won't even get into how asinine the whole strip club bit was. it was just one cliche or plot contrivance after another and none of it worked well or was funny in the slightest.
moustacherider 24th-Jan-2014 09:38 pm (UTC)
gurl I totally agree with you
ljubavirakija 24th-Jan-2014 09:02 pm (UTC)
I didn't like it either. I just wanted to punch all of her "friends"
16_bit_goddess 24th-Jan-2014 09:18 pm (UTC)
yeah, they were insufferable. they weren't funny bitchy characters a la heathers or mean girls or something, they were just gross.
luvthatdrtywata 24th-Jan-2014 09:51 pm (UTC)
oh man, really? i loved that movie. i seriously watched it twice in a row the first time i saw it.
16_bit_goddess 27th-Jan-2014 03:16 pm (UTC)
different strokes I guess...I was really excited to see it and then I absolutely hated it :(
lr489 24th-Jan-2014 08:35 pm (UTC)
my new doc looks just like amanda its freaky.
strong_delicate 24th-Jan-2014 08:36 pm (UTC)
Can she stop being the sassy, fat friend?
glittersecrecy 24th-Jan-2014 09:42 pm (UTC)
this is how i feel about myself irl
saintclaire87 24th-Jan-2014 08:39 pm (UTC)
According to Variety Amanda's character falls in love with her friend's boyfriend and tries to break them up. I wonder if they changed the premise.

"Story follows an Internet-savvy woman who convinces her friend to dump her new boyfriend so she can date him instead. Wilson will play Seyfried’s friend."

spiral_mystik 24th-Jan-2014 08:41 pm (UTC)
Let me guess. The movies will have an ridiculous amount of unfunny fat jokes.
rarkon 24th-Jan-2014 10:22 pm (UTC)
If she writes the scripts like in SFN, they will.
michelleantonia 25th-Jan-2014 11:46 am (UTC)
It doesn't, actually. The friend isn't specified as overweight. I think they cast Rebel because she can bring the funny
ljubavirakija 24th-Jan-2014 09:04 pm (UTC)
She needs to jump ship off of SFN. That show went from cutesy to unbearable.
melissa_ivory 24th-Jan-2014 09:06 pm (UTC)
I felt like it did that in the first episode tbh, but I'm not surprised.
hewontgo 24th-Jan-2014 09:06 pm (UTC)
the ratings for this show are bad and with a great lead in
cancellation is coming
glittersecrecy 24th-Jan-2014 09:42 pm (UTC)
it's terrible but i kinda like it tbh
sonadoras456 24th-Jan-2014 10:12 pm (UTC)
They stole all their ideas from Miranda from BBC.
melissa_ivory 24th-Jan-2014 09:05 pm (UTC)
I'm just staring at the article and wondering why the hell the author went from writing about Rebel to writing about Lena Dunham.
prophecypro 24th-Jan-2014 09:22 pm (UTC)
This article went to some convoluted places.
michelleantonia 25th-Jan-2014 11:45 am (UTC)
I read the He's F-ing Perfect script, it's actually quite good. But I can't see Amanda pulling off the main character... I think it needs someone with a lot more personality tbh. At least Emma Stone or someone like that..

Rebel seems perfect for the friend tho. She'll elevate it too
