An interesting fold in the ongoing drama surrounding Carter's death on"Person of Interest" has been revealed. It turns out that in addition to Taraji P. Henson's character's story arc running its course, showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Greg Plageman wanted to give room for their "Catwoman" character, Sarah Shahi's Shaw, to come into the fray.
"Jonah Nolan came in last year and said to us that he was going to kill Carter. I almost killed myself," CBS President of Entertainment Nina Tassler tells critics at the TCA 2014 winter press tour. "And we talk about how things change. Years ago, you would never, ever kill a major character. And the rule was if it ain't broken, don't fix it. But Jonah, to his credit, came in and said, 'Look, I love my cast. Taraji is an extraordinary actress. But sort of the role that she plays in terms of the relationship between Reese and Finch has changed.'"
She continues, "He said something so clever. He said, 'I need my Catwoman.' He said, 'I need to bring Catwoman into the mix of this relationship between these two guys.' And he talked about the Shaw character."
It could be argued that the "Catwoman" character is actually both Root and Shaw, as both women show facets of the Batman antiheroine's personality. Both Shahi and Amy Ackerwere promoted to series regulars before Season 3, and now that move makes a bit more sense.
"[Nolan] talked about the Shaw character and we all got very excited. And for those of you who watch 'Person of Interest,' I mean, this show is so much a part of pop culture and obviously very much in the zeitgeist," Tassler says. "We take everything these guys say quite seriously. And they mapped out a plan for the Carter character introducing the Shaw character."
It's no secret that Nolan took a lot of inspiration for "Person of Interest" from Batman, so it makes sense that they'd want to bring in his fan-favorite female sometimes-ally. Now the new question: Who is going to be "Person of Interest's" Joker?
