The series is produced by Universal Cable Productions and BOLD Films, and filmed in Cape Town, South Africa.

In Vega (formerly Las Vegas), the largest of these cities, two houses vie for control and the stage is set for political upheaval and a dangerous power shift. Just saw this, did a search here and found nada. Thought I'd post since it had so many peeps from shows that had tags here.  I'm sure if it's not also another country's co-production in some way, you probably can start the clock to cancellation in June.  Or maybe now.  ;-P  (I'm not sure why SyFy even bothers with new scripted shows any more, tbh, since they always tend to treat them very badly at some point.  They might as well become a reality channel and be done with it.)
therearewords 16th-Jan-2014 12:56 pm (UTC)
This sounds kind of cool.
But SyFy channel.
ms_geekette 16th-Jan-2014 01:07 pm (UTC)
Yes, SyFy channel.

They haven't cancelled Defiance yet (as far as I know), so, maybe they are in a period of benevolence where they are not cancelling all of their shows willy-nilly.

Since they are filming in South Africa the scenery should be at least nice/striking. You could barely see it in the trailer, but it looks sorta District 9-ish, in a way. Also, *points to my icon* (which was also filmed in SA).

Haven't seen the movie it's based on, so I don't know if this is a big change or is just a continuation of the movie premise/location. (I am not really excited about angels, so I dunno if I will check this out or not...just posting due to the cast, really.)
therearewords 16th-Jan-2014 01:23 pm (UTC)
I wish angel shows would get Seraphs in more often, moody bastards. And go for the less Christian angle, possible.
ms_geekette 16th-Jan-2014 01:36 pm (UTC)
If a US show can slap a biblical bent to something, they tend to go that way, unfortunately. There was a Bible-based miniseries on cable that got ridiculous numbers for basic cable not too long ago (not Walking Dead #s, but somewhere in that ballpark), so they may be thinking that they could possibly grab a bit of that audience. The SyFy channel's ratings are generally not great, so anything that could give them a boost, they are going to go for it.
therearewords 16th-Jan-2014 01:40 pm (UTC)
Yanks *shakes fist*

Maybe the show will surprise us.
ms_geekette 16th-Jan-2014 01:50 pm (UTC)
I am from the southern US, so calling us all "yanks" is sort of a dangerous thing, haha.

But don't worry, I hooked you with a potential Canadian "angel" idea in the other comment I left you. Still religious, but less "Bible-y". Really, it's more mythological.
therearewords 16th-Jan-2014 01:53 pm (UTC)
Gnehehehe, I wish we'd had an update for Yanks. Like frogs for the French and cheeseheads for the Dutch. Who are the Americans?
ms_geekette 16th-Jan-2014 02:13 pm (UTC)
If I were talking to a redneck, "rebel" would probably be safer term, although all rednecks are certainly *not* southern/from the SE US. I don't know if everyone else in the country id's as "yanks" or not, it used to only really refer to people in the NE US...I sorta don't like the word, but it's what everyone calls Americans as a nickname, so.... I'd prefer plain ole "American" really, nhf for that "USian" crap. XD

It's all tied to the US Civil War, which something that is probably not ever gonna be let go of anytime soon, especially while Hollywood only develops slavery movies for black actors/actresses other than Tyler Perry movies. ;-P I think we'd all like different topics (variety is *certainly* nice), but nooo, let's beat it into the ground. Keep everyone in their "place."

(yes, I'm tired of being reminded over and over that the US south had slavery and being automatically assumed to be a flaming racist if I "out" where I'm from. It's kinda tiring. Also other areas of the US like to use it as conscience cleanser so they don't have to think of genocide and the like in other areas of the country, too. I think many Native Americans might disagree with them. Pretty strongly.)

THIS EXPLANATION IS PROBABLY NOT WHAT YOU WERE EXPECTING. XD I'd like to make it light-hearted, like frogs and cheesheads.

You can call us cheeseburgers or apple-piers, if you want a general food based one, but I think everyone here would go...WHAT?! haha
therearewords 16th-Jan-2014 02:24 pm (UTC)

apple-piers is too cute. Damn, I never heard about USian before. Is that U-S-ian or use-ian?
ms_geekette 16th-Jan-2014 03:49 pm (UTC)
I have no idea how it's pronounced. Use-ian sounds like an alien race from another planet XD (perhaps that is true!), and U-S-ian is just...ugh. Considering how many languages have adopted forms of "American," to describe people from the United States, I think using something like "USian" would just confuse everyone. Or be confused for "Asian" or "Usain" (as in Usain Bolt). It's just a mess, haha, which is why it needs to be completely scoured from the Earth.

If someone wants to make up a new term, I'm totally fine with apple-pier in positive and negative ways. :-D I fear it may not catch on, which is a shame, b/c apple pie is delicious.
therearewords 16th-Jan-2014 04:29 pm (UTC)
As soon as I rule the world I'll get on it. It's nice and innocent.
ms_geekette 16th-Jan-2014 01:46 pm (UTC)
Also, have you seen Lost Girl? They haven't had a Seraph (SO FAR..I certainly would not rule it out on that show, particularly), but they currently have a semi-moody Valkyrie, haha. Although she's cheered up a bit at times this season, so a happier Valkyrie at times might not appeal to your broody Seraph-loving ways. (Still, she usually has a brood, especially if she feels someone needs a ticket to Valhalla.)

It's really the closest thing I can think of on TV right now that is non-biblical "angelic."
therearewords 16th-Jan-2014 01:52 pm (UTC)
A Valkyrie? Aaaah <3
ms_geekette 16th-Jan-2014 04:13 pm (UTC)
She's a sassy cutie. Her name is Tamsin and she shows up for the first time in Lost Girl 3.02 (the show is currently up to 4.09 in Canada)

Here's a behind-the-scenes pic of her looking glam (I *think* she's in costume in this one, but we haven't seen this look yet in the show - Rachel Skarsten may have just been leading people astray on purpose when she posted it)

Also, she got her grunge on recently, as well.

Normally, she sort of looks like this when she's trying to blend in

I could say more/show you more screencaps, but you *may* just wish to see it first for yourself, if you choose to check it out. She has more makeup...and stuff, occasionally. But as a caveat, Lost Girl can be a difficult show to like at times, especially if you dgaf about shipping. I think the writers ate some pot brownies off and on while writing this season especially and thought shipping everyone was a grand idea ;-P, but it's totally Mythology-R-Us...they just don't explain it very well sometimes. since I'm an urban fantasy fan, it's been pretty hard for me to drop it. Why can't I quit you, show???? ;__;

Although talking about this has made me wonder if The Almighty Johnsons might have something of a valkyrie nature, as well, since they are all Norse Gods. I haven't gotten around to watching that one yet, so I don't know how broad they go. (Lost Girl is starting to hint that Odin will be showing up at some point, since, in addition to Valkyries, other beings tied to him have been showing up, but I have no idea.)
ms_geekette 16th-Jan-2014 01:00 pm (UTC)
Since Game of Thrones fans might not know Roxanne McKee by name alone, she played Dany's handmaiden Doreah who
was locked in a vault in S2 with Xaro Xhoan Daxos by Dany - "Ducksauce" if you aren't up on character names, and is *presumably* dead, which is no surprise for GoT, lbr. She also was the recipient of Viserys' "sexposition" scene with extra-added dragon lore, and taught Dany how get her woman on top/missionary position on in S1.
soul_amazinn 16th-Jan-2014 01:15 pm (UTC)
Sounds interesting but I would care more if it were on another network. I don't really trust syfy channel. I always lose interest in their shows.
ms_geekette 16th-Jan-2014 01:28 pm (UTC)
Well, the guy who wrote and directed the movie it's based on is an Exec producer, so it's a bit different from most SyFy shows. Sony has some involvement, too, not just NBCUniversal/Universal/whatever they are calling their producing/studio arm now, so I dunno.

Sony's involvement alone might not keep SyFy from dicking around with it, but since they film on another continent, they might be able to keep them a bit more at bay than they might with a show filmed in N America. No idea. I just try not to get attached to SyFy shows, b/c the network is The Worst when it comes to giving shows the shaft. Thankfully the shows I like that air on SyFy are co-Canadian productions, so they can't just cancel them outright.
chiigusa 16th-Jan-2014 03:44 pm (UTC)
ms_geekette 16th-Jan-2014 03:53 pm (UTC)
Giles and Doreah deserve a *way* better network than SyFy, but hey, it's work, I guess?
chiigusa 16th-Jan-2014 03:57 pm (UTC)
Ha, true. But I've liked a couple of the recent SyFy original series, so maybe it'll be good. I really liked the first season of Defiance and I'm giving Helix a go.
ms_geekette 16th-Jan-2014 04:22 pm (UTC)
Well, I mainly meant a network that wouldn't treat them like crap, ultimately. XD They have a looong line of cancelled shows in their wake.

I've been watching Helix, too. I think it's an official Canadian co-production with Showcase, so it's a bit more difficult for SyFy to put the cancellation hex on those shows, especially if they are doing well in Canada. Hooray for apparent Canadian law that requires a certain percentage of Canadian produced shows to air on all? networks! Huzzah! I've been liking their sci-fi shows especially, so hopefully Canadians will keep tuning in to help keep the shows alive. "Canada you are our only hope against SyFy."

I really wish another network would embrace science-fiction/fantasy programming fully, so SyFy can just air WWE and Ghost Hunters all of the time like they apparently want to. ;-P
chiigusa 16th-Jan-2014 04:26 pm (UTC)
Oooh, gotcha! Very true. But after some of my fav sci-fi/fantasy shows got the ax *coughFirefly/Dollhousecough* too soon on network TV, I am also skeptical of them taking any real chances, haha. Then again, things like Hannibal and Sleepy Hollow are doing well. It really just depends. I really wish stations like AMC would just take a chance on everything because they're the best marketers when it comes to ~different~ kinds of programming.

And I didn't know that about Canada! Very interesting indeed. If only that's how it worked for all the shows!
honeebs 16th-Jan-2014 03:56 pm (UTC)
I'm so watching this. I like all things angels mostly fallen ones.
arsonarsenal 16th-Jan-2014 07:10 pm (UTC)
i gotta watch this b/c i love stories abt angels. I watched the first 2 prophecy movies, legion, Gabriel, and Supernatural. This is right up my alley.
prophecypro 16th-Jan-2014 08:21 pm (UTC)
Seems interesting. didnt know Roxanne McKee is getting that international work.
ms_geekette 17th-Jan-2014 12:20 pm (UTC)
It seems almost everyone associated with Game of Thrones is getting a little bit more work after/while being on the show. I'd never seen Michelle Fairley or Conleth Hill on US TV before, but then they snagged a gig on Suits.

So after SyFy does their typical SyFy thing ;-D, Roxanne might get some more things, perhaps.
sherrilina 17th-Jan-2014 02:27 am (UTC)
Lol I was all excited for a hot second thinking maybe Francois or someone else I love from TB had found another project, but I cant remember who this guy even played...

But lawd I remember when that movie came out, lol, and how I almost met up with another SPN fan on LJ to see it...
ms_geekette 17th-Jan-2014 12:11 pm (UTC)
Ha, yeah, sorry. I just thought I'd give the Borgias tag a little love, since I don't know how active Francois and Holliday are being right now and y'all might be bored, perhaps.

Apparently this guy played Fredirigo and was in 3 eps in 2013 (Borgia calls the character Federigo San Severino, but I'm not sure if they are playing the same role or just have similar names). I haven't gotten around to watching the show yet, so I don't know if it's a role that is bigger than someone's pal/acquaintance or something.

It looks like he's related to Anthony Stewart-Head's character in some way (son?) in this show.
consie 18th-Jan-2014 10:38 am (UTC)
Can they just resurrect Kings?

Because THAT would be awesome.
ms_geekette 19th-Jan-2014 03:17 am (UTC)
Maybe NBC felt guilty about cancelling Kings (IIRC it didn't get great ratings, but I think was a period where they did not have hardly anything doing well) and decided to test the Biblical waters again on SyFy. This show is a bit different though, I think...it sounds more post-apocalyptic or something to me (depends on what part of SA they emphasize). And the whole angel angle, as well. You could probably squint and compare it to Kings pretty easily, though. The cast is just not as stacked as that show was since Anthony Stewart-Head is probably the most known person on it.

Although, haha, Christopher Egan was in Kings as well (he played David), so maybe you could pretend it was weird continuation. Or something.
consie 19th-Jan-2014 03:25 am (UTC)
Lol to be honest I didn't really read the synopsis - I just saw Christopher Egan and wanted Kings back. It was just so good - but I can understand why it may have not been very successful with the masses...
ms_geekette 19th-Jan-2014 03:32 am (UTC)
Apparently the masses just want a straight Biblical retelling. ;-P XD I'll be surprised if SyFy gets better numbers for this than they usually do. This is probably too "edgy" for some people, as well.

This seems like it will just be battling between angels and humans. I'm not really sure what Egan's role is (angel or human), b/c it was not specified other than character name. He has a last name, so I guess he's playing a human.
consie 19th-Jan-2014 03:38 am (UTC)
I dunno - those Paul Bettany movies weren't really a success. I will be very surprised if this series works out. Although I think Kings would have worked much better on cable than network TV.

(To be honest I thought there was only one of those Paul Bettany movies - but I think there was Priest and Legion.)
ms_geekette 19th-Jan-2014 04:05 am (UTC)
I haven't seen the movie(s) at all, but they are not really my thing to begin with. Since SyFy has shunned space stories for most of their new stuff, I guess they are trawling the fantasy possibilities and trying to ride the post-apocalyptic/dystopia bandwagon a bit that is sort of going on right now (Walking Dead, Hunger Games). Like I said, I don't really expect this to be overly popular.

I'm really surprised they haven't tried to develop a zombie story right now, but it's possible that they've been all snapped up by other networks. (If I were trying to develop a show, SyFy would probably be my last choice, tbh.)
