Hilary Duff and Mike Comrie spent EIGHTEEN months in couples therapy before split

No one can accuse Hilary Duff and Mike Comrie of not trying.

The couple of three years spent a staggering 18 months in couples therapy before calling it quits, according to UsWeekly.

Ultimately, the actress, 26, who announced their split on Friday, 'felt he didn't put enough effort into the relationship,' the magazine added.

Mike, a former hockey star, was not showing enough enthusiasm. 'Recently he wasn't doing any of the things they'd worked on,' the source explained.

The 33-year-old's attitude reportedly changed after an injury in 2012 that took him off the ice for good. Nothing could inspire him.

'He never did anything!' the weekly's source said.

Hilary, who has made a career for herself as an actress and singer with such hits as the TV series Lizzie McGuire and the catchy tune So Yesterday, felt the romance leave the union.

'The spark was no longer there,' another source told Us. 'They are better as friends.'

The duo has a son Luca, aged 22 months.

'They remain best friends and will continue to be in each other's lives,' the actress' rep said on Friday. 'They are dedicated to loving and parenting their amazing son, and ask for privacy at this time.'

The day of the split, the two were together. The I Am singer tweeted, 'Mike and I are sitting here... We are so appreciative for all of your kindness & well wishes. Not an easy day but we're getting thru it together.'

Two days, Hilary and Mike were seen doting on Luca during a brunch in Beverly Hills.

The beauty - who looked radiant after a Tuesday dinner with friends in LA - has been keeping busy.

She just wrapped Flock Of Dudes with Bryan Greenberg and will reportedly start the TV movie Girlfriend In A Coma with Miranda Cosgrove soon.
