Final Fantasy Gossip/Creepy Post

Final Fantasy X, X-2, X-2.5, and X-3, to be more specific. But feel free to contribute in your own ways, video game fans.

There have been many mysteries surrounding the world of Spira, but Square Enix's latest Final Fantasy X-2.5 novella only makes matters worse. Written by Kazushige Nojima, the story of Final Fantasy X-2.5 ~Eien no Daishou~ (Final Fantasy X-2.5 ~Price of Eternity~) begins a few months after Final Fantasy X-2: The Last Mission, and ends about a half year before the 30 minute audio drama titled Final Fantasy X -Will-. This novel sequel has been loosely translated and shared with the internet, which brings us here tonight.

I will also include the English translation of Final Fantasy X -Will- and character sketches along with this entry - both taking place one year after X-2, which SE included with the Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster package. Beware that major spoilers and disturbing details (graphic death, sexual content) lie ahead.

The timeline (based on current information):

  • FFX - The Eternal Calm begins, Tidus disappears.
    - 2 years later -

  • FFX-2 - Shuyin is defeated, Tidus's pyreflies are brought back together.
    - 6 months later -

  • FFX-2.5 ~Price of Eternity~ - Tidus is killed and resurrected, the sex-fayth method is introduced, Farplane is disturbed.
    - 6 months later -

  • FFX -Will- - Dead are being "called back" to Spira, Sin returns, Chuami and Kurugum are introduced.

So let's start with the Novella, which was released December 26th, 2013, and has already been blasted with poor ratings and bad reviews from Final Fantasy X/X-2's Japanese fanbase.

Novella description, English:
Going on a trip together at Yuna's behest, Tidus and Yuna end up ship-wrecked on an unknown island where Tidus dies. Yuna is able to call him back from the Farplane after encountering a millennium-old unsent, but Tidus is not his old self after this event. The Farplane grows unstable afterwards and soon the dead are being beckoned back to Spira, including Sin.

Seems bad enough, but it only goes downhill from here. Scans of the novel have been posted (in this thread), and the posters (as well as reddit, screwattack, and neogaf) have gotten a hold of translations, which, by the way, are not concrete on top of keeping in mind that the novella should be taken as loose canon.

Before we begin however, it's important to address the series-wide canonical revelations depicted by the audio drama and/or novella. Taken from FFX3Chat, the following can be used as a reference tool for what's to come, regarding how Yuna resurrects Tidus:

Canonical revelations derived so far include :

Let's start with the translations (courtesy of users KaminaSan and Pixel from the Final Fantasy X-3 chat forum):

Tidus: "If the sunlight gets to be too much, we'll burn out. We also don't have the Sphere (?) so... it'd probably just end up badly (problematic)."

Yuna: "Yeah, that would be a disaster. Let's find some shade."

Tidus: "Actually, Yuna, I've been trying to get to the shade... but someone isn't cooperating."

Yuna: "Haha, it's not bad right now though," Yuna said as she smiled and caressed her shoulders.

Tidus: "It hurts..."
"It hurts, cause I'm alive..."

Tidus: "But we may as well confirm it with something that doesn't hurt!" Tidus said while bringing his face closer. Yuna pulled back without thinking.

Yuna: "Wait..."

Tidus: "Come on... we were spared, let's at least share the joy."

Tidus moved his pouting lips closer. Yuna pushed away his face while laughing.

Yuna: "Someone could be looking! Look, for example, that orange(?), it's just like Besaid!"

It wasn't hard to tell Tidus lost his energy, along with his excitement. Looking around, they checked their surroundings again.

Tidus: "You're right... it's like the Aurochs are gonna come running from over there," Tidus said while pointing toward the entrance to the road.

Tidus/Yuna: "But something is different... something that should be here... isn't".

The two of them held a strategy meeting in the shade of a waterfall on the road. They tried to prioritize and fully grasp the whole situation. They discussed what they would do if they met the inhabitants of this island.

Tidus: "If we come across someone, we'll just have to let them know somehow that we come in peace. But if they wanna pick a fight, (can't see the kanji), and they don't understand us... RUN! If we split up, we can meet back up at the waterfall entrance. Uh... that's the plan."

Yuna: "Sure thing!"

Tidus or Yuna (not sure who): "The stone statue kind of interests me, so if you find it, check it out!"

Yuna: "I mean... it's not like this entire island is empty, right? If not, I hope they are nice."

Tidus: "I know, right? ...But, uhh, I think that, even if they were hostile, they would probably forfeit once they got a look at you."

Yuna: "Huh? ...Why?"

Tidus: "Well..."

Tidus pointed to her chest, her all black bathing suit was split into upper and lower parts.

Tidus: "I... get excited. I tried to get used to it, but... I still get fired up even with an accidental glance."

Tidus: "And... I sometimes think of you that way. ...But, please don't hold it against me. I mean, I told you the truth, so you gotta forgive me!"

Tidus' Death, page scan

Tidus: "You giggled."

Yuna: "It's a secret."

Tidus: "Yunaaa!" Tidus spoke in a pitiful voice. It was amusing to her, and unbearably adorable.

Tidus: "Ouch!"

When Yuna looked, Tidus was holding the back of his head.

Tidus: "...Huh?"

Tidus looked around in surprise. Before his eyes was a ball of tanned leather color, rolling gently on the ground. It was about the same size the ones used in Blitzball tournaments.

Tidus: "A blitzball?!"

Glancing around for the ball's owner, Tidus began to walk towards it. Yuna watched as he took one step forward.

And then felt surprise, for tears were suddenly spilling from her eyes. Her emotions jolted abruptly and she couldn't stand. Crouched on the ground with both arms wrapped around her, she realized that the emotion she was feeling was unbearable sadness. In one moment a loud noise had flooded her ears and a strong force had flung her into the air. The thing which went flying towards her was the head of Tidus, with the look of shock still affixed to it, which had blown off his body and was now lying in front of her.

Yuna lost consciousness.

Unsent: "Remember him. His name... was Tidus, correct?"

An unknown voice called to Yuna.

We'll get back to this. Next up?

Final Fantasy X -Will-, the audio drama

This 30 minute audio clip is the last in our Final Fantasy X timeline. It introduces two new characters who contribute to many of the details added onto the X plot, and reveals a few pieces to the puzzle that help itself and the novella come together as a whole.

Sketches by character designer Tetsuya Nomura were released and added onto the Final Fantasy Wiki.
Meet the games' two new characters:

Chuami; a hot-headed outspoken 17-year-old female of the newly formed Spirian Council, claiming to be Sir Auron's daughter,
and Kurgum; a respectful, yet meek, similarly aged male sender - a specialist with the responsibility to send dead people to the Farplane

Nomura also sketched an older Yuna and Tidus as they appear in Final Fantasy X -Will-:

Tidus sports a headband much like his father's, and Yuna seems to have ditched her revealing outfit (encouraged by Rikku) and returned to her old ways - in personality as well, as loose evidence would suggest.

Audio Drama translation, English:

General summary of events
Chuami and Kurgum (who is Chuami's closest friend), are being sent to Besaid by Baralai to search for Yuna. They meet Tidus at the Bevelle Stadium that is under construction. Tidus is a blitzball star but Chuami notices he's injured and has little energy, although he is trying to hide it. Reaching Besaid, Chuami and Kurgum meet Lulu and Wakka, who take them to Yuna. Yuna has returned to the mannerisms and dress style of her summoner days, and now refers to her sphere hunter days as a "bad dream". Kurgum shows Yuna a movie sphere with a recording of two shoopufs at the Moonflow. The shoopuf was the last of its kind after the female was killed by Sin thirty years ago, but it mysteriously reappeared one morning, causing Yuna to believe the shoopuf had been "called".

Kurgum tells Yuna she must accompany him and Chuami back to Bevelle and address the Spiran Council. When Yuna refuses, Chuami tells her about the injured Tidus compelling Yuna to take action. When Lulu hears Chuami mention being Auron's daughter, Lulu confronts her, saying that she doesn't look like him and that many people claim to be children of Auron, Jecht, and Braska. Chuami says she takes after her mother who wouldn't lie to her, but Lulu says Auron would have mentioned having children since he wasn't the type of person to hide such a thing.

As Chuami, Kurgum, Yuna and Wakka pass over the Moonflow on an airship, they see the shoopufs and a crowd of onlookers, where half of the people are illusions created by the pyreflies. They see a father and daughter with the illusion of the girl's mother who answers her request for them to go home together, which stuns the group, since the illusions normally can't hear or speak. Kurgum insists the illusions should be sent to the Farplane, but Yuna says they don't have the right to interfere with the reunion. Returning to Bevelle, they find Sin has been reactivated, possibly called by someone's wish, and Yuna rushes to meet with Tidus. Yuna had previously told Chuami that Tidus is her boyfriend, but when Chuami and Kurgum eavesdrop on the conversation between the two, it seems they are breaking up. Yuna is jealous of Tidus's friend, Marfi, but soon tells him she doesn't care anymore, and has already got another person she likes. Tidus asks who it is, but Yuna tells him it's someone he doesn't know and leaves.

Chuami and Kurgum part ways with the latter accompanying Yuna and Wakka, and the former returning to Besaid with Tidus. When Tidus asks Lulu about Yuna's new love interest, Lulu says she thought Tidus would know Yuna better and tells him to figure it out himself. She says that if something else can be brought back, then Sin's revival shouldn't be surprising. After Tidus figures out the meaning behind Lulu's words, they depart. On a ship with Lulu and Chuami, Tidus says he wants to follow Yuna and the others on her new journey, since he promised to be with her forever. Elsewhere, Yuna delivers a speech to a crowd in a stadium, proclaiming she will defeat Sin once more.

This is what we have so far. Naturally, fans have gathered round to pick apart these translations, giving rise to many theories and speculations. First and foremost are questions surrounding the mysterious island Yuna and Tidus found themselves on. It should come as no surprise that there is more to this world of Final Fantasy X than what we know of Spira, since Dream Zanarkand exists somewhere out into the ocean, away from it.
a. The island is the product of summoning by a millennium-old unsent summoner.
b. The island is a millennium-old refuge for summoners during the Machina War, laden with blitzballs as bombs for guising the true nature.
- Story of summoner and guardian couple at Zanarkand during the Machina War
a. Female summoner does not want to sacrifice beloved guardian, has sex with another male summoner to spare guardian's life
b. Either male summoner or guardian dies at the hands of an Al Bhed
c. Female summoner turns deceased into unsent
d. Unsent suffers through eternal life by losing the ones he loves to natural death
e. Millennium-old unsent exists to current age

Then there are details (brought to our attention by translators of the novella and the audio drama) regarding Yuna "coming to terms with nature of the unknown island." This could be referring to:
a. Yuna's realization of the island being the summon of the ancient millennium-old summoner
b. Yuna's realization of the island being a refuge during the Machina War a millennium prior

Next is Tidus' resurrection. He seems well and good, even after his head blew off.
a. [FAYTH THEORY] Yuna turns Tidus into a fayth
b. [UNSENT THEORY] Yuna travels to the Farplane, calling on the pyreflies to bring back his body by whistling for him
c. Post-death Tidus does not know about how he was revived, nor can he or else he will disappear again

- Yuna's attitude towards Tidus on the island is cold and harsh, viewing him as childish and immature
- Yuna has some sort of unspecified control over post-death Tidus
- The turbulence caused by Tidus's revival caused the Farplane to be weakened, allowing another entity to manipulate it
- The dead returning to Spira by "calling" for them is a result of an entity taking advantage of the disheveled Farplane

- Yuna made Tidus a fayth to revive him, and as a side effect she can control him (a la an aeon)
- Tidus's fayth is constantly being summoned by Yuna in order for Tidus to stay alive

- Yuna travelled to the Farplane after Tidus's death and "called" him back to life by whistling for him

Confusion aside, Nojima has expressed his interest in a Final Fantasy X-3, which would probably explain all of this added nonsense.

But there you have it. Welcome to Sqare Enix.
