Lorde: 'David Bowie told me my music sounds like tomorrow'

"I don’t want to do the weird name-dropping thing, but like- Meeting David Bowie was like that. To have someone like that tell you that listening to you felt like listening to tomorrow. I was like... I could creatively die and just be happy forever. I never tell anyone about that experience, because it meant so much to me, and I feel like it would be dulled or something if I always talked about it in magazines or whatever. It’s my special thing. [Do you want us to not include it in this?] Oh, I mean, it’s OK. It was super cute, though—for some reason we were holding hands and just staring into each other’s eyes and talking, and I was like, This is David Bowie’s hand, what am I doing? It was insane. A beautiful moment."

lol @ the namedropping. also lol because bowie said something similar to the killers

I'm pretty sure this is the musical equivalent of Don Corleone making you kiss his ring

2014 has barely started and I'm so over this child

With how hyper-saturated and buzzy Royals is it's going to be pretty damn difficult for her to not be a one hit wonder. Though the fact that her label has invested years of effort/money into her does bode well for her staying power, if only so they can get a return on their investment
tankmachine 4th-Jan-2014 05:21 am (UTC)
Team is #18 on the Hot 100 and rising oops
abortions 4th-Jan-2014 05:17 am (UTC)
lmao ok

also i just realized that team and royals are basically the same song
overprotected 4th-Jan-2014 05:27 am (UTC)
her whole album is basically the same song
laurie_springs 4th-Jan-2014 05:30 am (UTC)
Lyrically they're pretty much the same song but Team sounds better imo
dizzy879 4th-Jan-2014 07:16 am (UTC)
warsawed 4th-Jan-2014 05:35 am (UTC)
thematically yes (her whole album kind of fits into one overarching theme tho) but Team has a much better chorus imo
h0tfuss 4th-Jan-2014 05:37 am (UTC)
I think the sentiment behind "Team" is very immature but I'd rather that young girls listen to Lorde than pretty much anything else out there.
ponpiri 4th-Jan-2014 05:43 am (UTC)
That entire album is one note.
saintvlas22 4th-Jan-2014 05:50 am (UTC)
I feel that way about Adele's album, which I love. Aside from 'Set Fire to the Rain', 21 is really the same thing.
adorealire 4th-Jan-2014 07:17 am (UTC)
The themes in all of her songs are the same, but they sound different, and I prefer team over royals (though I do actually really love royals)
markedglory 4th-Jan-2014 05:20 am (UTC)

pls n thx
warsawed 4th-Jan-2014 05:25 am (UTC)
I'm rooting for Buzzcut Season bc its by far her masterpiece (that or Ribs imo) but I know it'll probably never happen :'(
sunsettwist 4th-Jan-2014 05:27 am (UTC)
seconded re: buzzcut season
tankmachine 4th-Jan-2014 05:28 am (UTC)
Ribs is the more likely if the two if it gets a slight radio edit I think
threeatatimejay 4th-Jan-2014 05:48 am (UTC)
I love Buzzcut Season and Glory and Gore and it just makes me pressed that Royals got so much attention. It's not even her best song. :/
sparklekittens 4th-Jan-2014 06:03 am (UTC)
buzzcut season is perfect
moneeypenny 4th-Jan-2014 07:13 am (UTC)
omg yes about buzzcut season
igbywentdown 4th-Jan-2014 01:00 pm (UTC)
glory & gore is SO good, but it's the first song i got tired of
mondler_4ever 4th-Jan-2014 01:30 pm (UTC)
Tennis Court is the one that I think that could have Royals-like success.
birchwhite 4th-Jan-2014 04:15 pm (UTC)
Glory and Gore is one of my favs on Pure Heroine.
hahahey 4th-Jan-2014 05:25 am (UTC)
I don’t want to do the weird name-dropping thing

and then she goes on to do the weird name-dropping thing lol, I'm not even mad, get that praise girl
dumpweeds 4th-Jan-2014 05:27 am (UTC)
I liked that whole interview. rookie mag is a little "ehh" but it's directed towards girls her age so I'm not surprised. I liked what she said about the critique of royals.

When people started to look at “Royals” as a critique of hip-hop, how did you react and feel?

I mean, it’s one thing for kids who fight in the comments section of YouTube and who use “gay” as an insult to take offense at what you’re doing; but when it’s highly intelligent writers, all of whom you respect, you start to question what you’re doing and if you have done something wrong. I have grown up in a time when rap music is pop music, and I do think people were maybe a little bit selective about the parts of that song they used to make those arguments, because a lot of it is examples of rock excess, or just standard pop culture “rich kids of Instagram”-type excess. But I’m glad that people are having discussions about it and informing me about it. Also, I wrote that song a few months into being 15, and now I’m a 17-year-old looking back on that, and I didn’t know then what I know now, so I kind of am not too hard on myself.

I feel like this is so obvious in the song but I'm glad she sees it as constructive and didn't get all high and mighty about it, thats a good sign for things to come imo
kamikashi 4th-Jan-2014 05:34 am (UTC)
good response. some lines could be about hip hop, but i def felt it was referencing more so rock/pop excess like she says.
mondler_4ever 4th-Jan-2014 01:32 pm (UTC)
This. Especially the "trashing the hotel room" lyric.
genbu_no_miko24 4th-Jan-2014 05:39 am (UTC)
Honestly when I first heard I thought it was critiquing the rock n roll lifestyle. Since I didn't get the references to hip hop it went over my head lol.

h0tfuss 4th-Jan-2014 05:42 am (UTC)
I wouldn't even mind it if the materialistic and misogynistic aspects of commercial hip-hop were criticized by a young woman from a humble background. Though I don't think that's what she was doing.
boku_no_hanabi 4th-Jan-2014 06:17 am (UTC)
I like this response.
akasha6915 4th-Jan-2014 09:56 am (UTC)
Good and smart response. And honestly, I also thought of a lot of rock-n-roll excess when I heard the song. Like it just reminds me of hearing all the waste of booze, and I think it was The Who? that threw a TV out of a hotel window because they didn't like what was on the channel.
nene718 4th-Jan-2014 10:26 am (UTC)
i think she's growing a lot and in a few years i'll probably like her a lot if she continues on this trajectory
black_swan87 4th-Jan-2014 11:37 pm (UTC)
I wrote that song a few months into being 15, and now I’m a 17-year-old looking back on that, and I didn’t know then what I know now, so I kind of am not too hard on myself.

why is this so funny?
laurie_springs 4th-Jan-2014 05:28 am (UTC)
Well he and every other 'hip' person over 40 seem to feel that way about her so I'm not surprised.
h0tfuss 4th-Jan-2014 05:33 am (UTC)
Her music is the kind of techy-but-not-dancey music that he dabbles in sometimes so I'm not surprised that she's the current pop star he likes.
20727 4th-Jan-2014 05:37 am (UTC)
he's nice to all the people he meets though. people who previously hated him, meet him and walk away charmed and feeling special . so idt this means anything but i am obviously jealous too so
h0tfuss 4th-Jan-2014 05:38 am (UTC)
The guy I'm sleeping with looks a lot like Bowie.

/obviously relevant to ur jealousy.
