Jon Favreau to Bring Shannara to MTV

The popular fantasy novel series from author Terry Brooks is coming to MTV from Jon Favreau and Smallville showrunners.

The Shannara series of fantasy novels, which have somehow never seen a film or TV adaptation, are finally coming to TV. Based on the series by Terry Brooks, which spans dozens of novels, Shannara is a fantasy world ready for serious exploration. MTV is developing Shannara with Jon Favreau set to direct and produce from a script from former Smallville showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, who will share executive producer credit with Brooks and Dan Farah.

“I am thrilled to be working with the Smallville creators Al and Miles again along with the amazingly talented Jon Favreau,” MTV president Susanne Daniels said. “We feel that the Shannara novels are a perfect fit for MTV as this type of fantasy genre has continuously proved to resonate with our audience.”

According to Deadline, the first season of Shannara will be based on the second book in the series, The Elfstones of Shannara. This is all quite exciting, as the Shannara series has millions of fans, and the books, while not as lurid as Game of Thrones create an incredible fantasy world. More on this as we get it!
