For Selena Gomez, 2013 is a year to remember!
Between success, heartbreak, family expansion (she’s now a big sister to little sister Gracie, born in June!) and huge milestones, 2013 has been a memorable year for Selena Gomez. It wouldn’t be a stretch to refer to her as one of the biggest stars of the past twelve months. The twenty-one year old, who found her start and dedicated fan base on Barney and the Disney Channel, has dipped her feat in almost every area over the last fifty-two weeks. From movies and a return to Disney Channel to the studio, top of the charts and stages all over the world, Selena has definitely quadrupled her Frequent Flyer Miles.
For every young adult, leaving the teen years and entering adulthood is a scary transition that often results in many questions. Who are you supposed to be? What’s appropriate? Who do you have to impress? Is being “you” enough? In a recent interview with Teen Vogue, Selena Gomez revealed she’s been constantly asking herself these questions. The music and movie star said, “I’m 21, so now I’ve entered this decade of confusion about who I am and what I want to do with my life, and that’s what this entire decade’s going to be.” Props to you, Selena, keep trying to figure yourself out!
While it’s obvious some people love to hate Selena, it seems more are cheering her on and supporting the brunette beauty as she chases her dreams. Selena started her year with a return to Disney Channel and a couple of controversial appearances on the big screen. For Gomez, Disney Channel and her hit show “Wizards of Waverly Place” was the ideal comfort zone so it didn’t really come as a shock when she took the initiative to head back to the set where she felt safest.Airing in March, Selena starred in “The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex” before closing the Disney chapter of her life and moving onto roles that would spark headlines and criticism.
Selena traded in her wand and sub shop for bikinis, bongs and guns as she left Waverly Place for a crazy spring break in Florida. Originally, “Spring Breakers” was intended to be a project for film festivals but ended up hitting theaters all over the globe. What was the reason for the change of venue? The hype surrounding the filming process and having an actress like Gomez in it most likely helped the Harmony Korine directed film. “Spring Breakers” wasn’t Sel’s only trip to the big screen this year, she also starred alongside Ethan Hawke in “The Getaway,” an action-packed film completely different than anything we’ve seen Selena release in the past. “Spring Breakers” and “The Getaway” are the only films Selena released in 2013 but recently, she hinted at two more films being released early in 2014, making all of us excited!
With a shortage of films, what could Selena possibly have done to occupy her time? She spent endless hours behind the microphone in a recording studio, creating an album that fans are still jamming along to. Stars Dance, Selena’s début solo studio album, was released on July 23, 2013, the day after she turned twenty-one! Although Stars Dance is her début solo album, it’s her fourth overall album, previously releasing albums as Selena Gomez and the Scene. Inspired by Britney Spears and Skrillex, Stars Dance debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart, making it Selena’s first album to debut and peak at number one! With an album debuting at number one and songs that are perfect for dancing along to, it only makes sense that Selena brought this album on a world tour! Beginning in Canada in August and ending in the United States right before Thanksgiving, Selena embarked on the Stars Dance tour where she brought along opening act Emblem 3!
What now? Selena has begun a series of Jingle Ball appearances around the country, giving her loyal fans another opportunity to see a live performance.
