Joaquin Phoenix Tells Story of Becoming Vegan at Age Three

Actor and vegan activist Joaquin Phoenix may be unpredictable in interviews, but his commitment to veganism is steadfast. Vegan since the age of three, Phoenix recently recalled the story of how he and his siblings became vegan in an interview with Cover Media.

“There were five kids and we literally screamed at our parents and said, ‘We are never going to eat meat again.’ Because we were on a boat, and they were catching fish, and they were throwing fish against the side of the boat in order to kill them, they are flopping around, so these kids, there were five of us, no there were four of us, one of them was pregnant with my younger sister, and it was undeniable that it was brutal, barbaric and horrible for us, and so we said that. I remember my mum not being to answer and we said, ‘Why didn’t you tell us that’s where meat came from?’ And she didn’t know what to say. I feel like I have this memory of seeing her crying,” says Phoenix.

The award-winning actor also discusses his work with PETA, emphasizing the importance of simple education and awareness about meat.

Phoenix explains, “Well I think for a couple of things that I have done, a couple of PSA’s that I did, I think it was just about raising awareness. You know, when I was a kid growing up, people thought vegans were f*cking cults that had some bizarre rituals and sh*t and there were like some rules and we had to dress a certain way or something. Part of it is to say that there is an alternative, and this is the reality of other things and I wasn’t aware of that and thank you for making me aware of it. I didn’t know that I was buying that product and that’s what would happen. So, I think it’s awesome any time somebody makes me aware of something that I didn’t know.”

Fans of Phoenix can catch him December 18 in Spike Jonze‘s new film “Her.” In the film, Phoenix plays a writer in love with his newly-purchased operating system, voiced by Scarlett Johansson.

Whether he’s making a PETA PSA, attempting to launch a rap career or starring in an A-list director’s meditation on technology and modern love, Joaquin Phoenix is always compelling.

lil_creamsoda 3rd-Dec-2013 03:52 am (UTC)

...Become a vegan, not a troller....

yeah, i am vegetarian and find it incredibly easy but even as someone who doesn't like eggs or cheese, being a vegan sounds incredibly difficult and time consuming. i would love to be because there is nothing better than really good vegan food but there is also nothing worse than bad vegan food.
sarahsumbrella 4th-Dec-2013 11:02 am (UTC)
I found it easier to give up dairy than I did meat tbh
The whole "Vegan before 6" movement made it much more do-able for me too. Also I don't go hardcore, if something has honey in it I'm not going to go apoplectic with rage, just shrug it off and move in. Plus I've told myself that if the day comes where I just really want a steak and some ice cream I'll have it. But so far that day hasn't come.
jessepinkman 3rd-Dec-2013 03:49 am (UTC)
im still thinking about that party someone got to attend at spike's house? and joaquin was jumping up and down singing.

sarahsumbrella 4th-Dec-2013 11:03 am (UTC)
He really doesn't look like River at all, bless.
morgan90 3rd-Dec-2013 03:51 am (UTC)

xtumblingdicex 3rd-Dec-2013 04:00 am (UTC)

Ive been a vegetarian for 11 years now and I started when I was 10 and im a pisces.

only the caring kindest bitches wont eat animals.
arilicious 3rd-Dec-2013 03:53 am (UTC)
i'm an aquarius, an air sign, what does that say about me?
is it normal for aquarians to be vegetarians?
masterofmystery 3rd-Dec-2013 03:59 am (UTC)
my cousin is an aquarius and is one. however, i am too and you could never stop me from eating chicken
funbeam 3rd-Dec-2013 03:54 am (UTC)
only the caring kindest bitches wont eat animals.

my cousin was a vegetarian for years because he hated animals so much that he didn't want them near him, let alone in his mouth.
luvthatdrtywata 3rd-Dec-2013 06:01 am (UTC)
Holy shit, am i a vegetarian because i am an Aquarius????
foofyfoof246 3rd-Dec-2013 09:26 pm (UTC)
I'm a pisces, too, and I have no inclination to become a vegetarian/vegan. signs mean nothing.
arilicious 3rd-Dec-2013 03:52 am (UTC)
i think i heard somewhere that apparently river never actually went to school, maybe that's the same with joaquin?
ctfobro 3rd-Dec-2013 03:54 am (UTC)
Oh, he's a vegan..................
ctfobro 3rd-Dec-2013 03:55 am (UTC)
Oh, he works with PETA............
ctfobro 3rd-Dec-2013 03:56 am (UTC)
Oh, he's dating a 19 yr old....
And had some weird troll phase...
But damn he's a good actor...
And handsome...
funbeam 3rd-Dec-2013 03:55 am (UTC)
How old were the other kids? I understand how seeing something like that might turn someone vegetarian but what little kid even makes the connection to veganism?
soul_amazinn 3rd-Dec-2013 03:57 am (UTC)
well if the older siblings were it would make sense for a three or four year old to do the same
funbeam 3rd-Dec-2013 03:59 am (UTC)
Yeah, that's why I asked how old the others were. Like, were they old enough to know the difference.
arilicious 3rd-Dec-2013 03:58 am (UTC)
maybe he just meant vegetarian, but said vegan?
idk, maybe he thought it would make him sound cooler if he said 'i became a vegan when i was 3' rather than just say 'i became a vegetarian when i was 3'.

My daughter was vegan from age 3-7. She did it on her own after learning what meat actually was. She's slowly getting out of being vegan but still refuses all pork.
leviicorpus 3rd-Dec-2013 04:18 am (UTC)
i need to get my iron checked because i've been craving red meat nonstop for months. idk maybe it's a cold weather thing.
pacificway 3rd-Dec-2013 04:30 am (UTC)
I started eating meat a few yrs ago b/c I wasn't feeling well - thinking it was low iron. Turns out I was at less than 1 (whatever the count is in your blood) of iron and you were supposed to be btwn 12 and 150. So I'm on daily iron pills, gradually getting more iron in me (or whatever it is you get).

And I stopped eating meat again b/c that wasn't the prob. /csb lol

In an attempt to stay off of milk I am drinking almond, soy, rice and rn hemp milk (I am drinking a hemp milk smoothie and it's....kinda earthy I guess?) lol

JP is a good actor but...a bit strange I think.
nutmegdealer 3rd-Dec-2013 04:26 am (UTC)
hemp milk's alright. i like flax milk the best, but it's hard to find.
pacificway 3rd-Dec-2013 04:32 am (UTC)
Oooh, I've seen it, but haven't tried it or oat (oat? I think) milk. thx for the tip
