The new Israeli singing competition Rising Star is headed to the U.S., with ABC ordering ten episodes from Keshet DCP, the joint venture between Keshet International and DC Media, the parent company of dick clark productions.
The American version is set for summer 2014 launch. Produced by Tedy Productions for Keshet Broadcasting, the Israeli original premiered on Israel’s Channel 2 this fall and has scored a 49.4-percent share. Local versions have been commissioned by M6 in France, VGTRK's Rossiya 1 in Russia, RTL in Germany, Toro in Italy and Banijay Group's Nordisk Film TV for broadcast in Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland.
The live singing competition aims to find a country's next big musical sensation. The interactive format allows home audience members to vote for their favorite performer in real time through a free application that can be downloaded on smartphones and tablets.
"From the beginning we felt we must get connected to the viewers in a new way, get them excited, get them surprised, and also get connected to the way they live and experience things today," Ran Tellem, the VP of programming for Keshet, recently told TV Formats. "Texting and waiting for the end of the show to see the results is so 2001. Voting, live, with your ID and your face, and watching it dramatically happen in front of your eyes was the new thing."
