Lucy Hale talks new album in Self October 2013
The skyrocketing actress (and Pretty Little Liars star) talks facing fears, finding real happiness and why she can't stop singing. Plus: Go behind the scenes at Lucy's cover shoot!
If Lucy Hale, one of the stars of Pretty Little Liars, did what was expected of one of Hollywood's cool young things, she'd spend her fall hiatus shooting some big movie. But rather than bulk up her screen credits, the 24-year-old Memphis native is following her heart. In the next few months, she'll release her first country album, fully aware that inserting a hyphen into her job title will make her an easy mark for cynics.
"I'm scared as hell. Some days I go to sleep and I'm like, What am I doing? People aren't going to take me seriously," says Hale, who does actually know what she's doing. Back in 2003, she competed (successfully) onAmerican Juniors, anIdol spin-off. "Music is my favorite thing, and I'm going to fight to make it happen."
"I was on the beach in Hawaii and there were paparazzi in the bushes. I don't think anybody wants to be photographed in their bikini unless you're like a Victoria's Secret model. There's always a little voice in my head that says, Suck it in a little more—but you know, I'm so comfortable with who I am, I'm just like, screw it! Take pictures!"
What gives her a (healthy) high.
"Long runs. Yesterday I ran 9 miles and I was euphoric. It was amazing. My knees hurt and I was in pain afterward, but I did it!"
What she can't avoid.
"Parking tickets. I have three right now. I always get them. Maybe the [cops] are just drawn to the fact that I'm in a red zone and shouldn't be parking there. That could be it."
What gets her off her ass.
"I won't work out without music. I'm not one of those people who looks forward to exercising, so music gets me through it. My new favorite song is 'Wake Me Up!' by Avicii."
What she'd like to change
"I always wish I was a little bit taller. Maybe 2 inches to make it to 5 foot 4. I'll take whatever I can get."
