Teen Beach Movie beats High School Musical with 8.4 million

The broadcast was Disney's #3 best rated telepic of all time - even beating the original High School Musical's 7.7 million.

The Disney Channel movie debuted Friday (July 19) to 8.4 million viewers, the biggest audience on all of TV for the night. About half that audience was made up of the kids and tweens that are Disney's core audience, but it also drew 1.6 million adults 18-49 -- also the best of the night.

It now stands as the network’s #3 original movie ever in Kids 2-11 and Kids 6-11, behind only “High School Musical 2” and “Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie”.

The “Teen Beach Movie” soundtrack is currently the #1 soundtrack across the U.S., and #4 on iTunes.

“Teen Beach Movie” built each half-hour, peaking with 9.0 million Total Viewers and 4.9 million Kids 2-11.

Leading out of that, a first look at the new series Liv and Maddie held onto 5.8 million viewers, the strongest Disney Channel debut in two-and-a-half years (since Shake It Up!).
