Orlando Bloom Post: Up In The Air

Jetting from Cannes to Australia is all in a day's work for Orlando Bloom. From avoiding the drinks trolley to his favourite hang-outs, the star tells us how he handles long-haul travel...

Your tips for avoiding jet lag?

The key thing for me is to avoid alcohol, drink lots of water and adjust my sleep to the time zone I’m entering. When I arrive at my destination I like to hit the gym as I find exercise helps combat jet lag.

What are your top recommendations for a weekend in London?

London is one of the most exciting cities in the world with a melting pot of cultures and diversity. It’s now Spring in the UK, so there is something for everyone, from music festivals such as Glastonbury to Taste of London and great sporting events like Wimbledon, Henley and Royal Ascot... not to mention some of the world’s best theatre at the West End and exhibitions at V&A and Natural History Museum.

What is in your carry-on luggage?

I like to keep it simple, so I tend to use a black weekend bag or a small black wheelie (suitcase). I generally travel with my lap top, a couple of great books and my ipod.

How do you pass the time during the flight?

It depends what I'm in the mood for. I often read a book or watch a film, but I also like to use the time to catch up on sleep or emails.

Your favourite international destination?

That’s a hard one as it completely depends on what I want to do and what season it is. When we’re based in LA - you can’t beat the Caribbean for complete relaxation, although it’s the smaller, lesser-known islands that we prefer. I also love places that are completely cut off from everything – where I can relax and enjoy the simplicity of nature. As a family, we also love to come to Sydney.

Best city for food?

It really depends on the cuisine. London does the best Sunday roast. Miranda and I love the seafood in Sydney and the steaks in South Africa are amazing. It goes without saying New Zealand does the best lamb.

Where would you love to travel that you have never been?

I would love to take [his son] Flynn to see the Pandas in Chengdu.

What is your earliest memory of flying?

As a child I had the opportunity to meet the Captain onboard a British Airways flight. It was so exciting to see the cockpit and controls, I was in awe of the Captain and he stamped my log book which I still have to this day.

What is the one thing you can't travel without?

Other than passport, a credit card and my iPhone it would have to be a good book.

Where do you consider home to be?

Wherever my family is.

How often do you travel?

Sometimes often, sometime not often at all - it depends on our work schedule. I will be in New Zealand for about a month to finish filming The Hobbit. Then I will be in New York for over six months playing 'Romeo' in Shakespeare's "Romeo & Juliet' on Broadway directed by David Leveaux.

Best travel advice?

Check in with the crew onboard for tips on places to go at your arrival destination, they always seem to know the best things to see and do, and what’s current.

What movie inspired you to travel?

I cherished my time filming Lord of the Rings in New Zealand; it’s the most beautiful, magical place with great hospitality.

Top tips for travelling with children?

Prepare and make it fun for them.

What do you wear when you fly?

I like to be comfortable so generally travel in a T-shirt and jeans. If on a long haul flight I change into my BA sleeper suit.

holy damn, i had the biggest crush on him back in the day. wtf happened and why did he fizzle so quickly??
myreceiptsbox 20th-Jun-2013 09:07 am (UTC)
The public collectively lost interest all at the same time tbh. Two back-to-back trilogy franchises caused his flame to burn out quicker than it should have. Plus he followed it up with some truly AWFUL movies. Elizabethtown, anyone?
puppere 20th-Jun-2013 10:01 am (UTC)
I think it is
foryoursake08 20th-Jun-2013 03:19 pm (UTC)
excuse you, Elizabethtown is a precious movie to those of us from the area

bssybuse 20th-Jun-2013 09:13 am (UTC)
idk but i hope for career resurrection for him and hayden christensen
kindafunnysad 20th-Jun-2013 11:34 am (UTC)

tuggernuts 20th-Jun-2013 01:41 pm (UTC)
he's not a good actor unless he's playing fantasy or period

and he's kind of lost the hot
pandora04 20th-Jun-2013 01:52 pm (UTC)
I did too and the biggest thing I remember is him talking in LOTR interviews about being a technophone and now I read that he has a laptop and an iPad. I wonder how long he lasted or how he defined "technophobe."

Oh and of course the "fav vegetables" thing from Graham Norton.
makahakat 20th-Jun-2013 01:56 pm (UTC)
hes done some indie flicks and plays, i feel like hes been doing mostly the latter recently

other than that id assume hes enjoying having a lot of money and a victorias secret model for a wife lmao
mjspice 20th-Jun-2013 03:15 pm (UTC)
I guess he didn't get the "meatier" roles he was expecting. :/
anolinde 20th-Jun-2013 03:37 pm (UTC)
I think after POTC he took a break from acting, so he wasn't really on the radar. Now it seems like he's more interested in spending time with his family, which makes sense.
pessimist_91 20th-Jun-2013 09:05 am (UTC)
horrible actor imo
myreceiptsbox 20th-Jun-2013 09:05 am (UTC)
Still a total babe. I weep for his career that we all pretty much lost interest in after POTC3.

Excited to see him as Legolas again in the next Hobbit movie tbh!

myreceiptsbox 20th-Jun-2013 09:06 am (UTC)
O ya, and Kit Harrington wishes he could.

greatestheroine 20th-Jun-2013 09:13 am (UTC)
Plane food is the worst. And restrooms too.

My butt gets all numb after a 14hr flight, and I given the choice, I wouldn't want anyone seated in my row. So I can just stretch out and lounge like it's nobody's business.
tiltheworldend 20th-Jun-2013 10:20 am (UTC)
lol i love airplane food. I love all the different stuff you get and the small tray...even though in the end i spill food and sauce fucking everywhere and the whole thing becomes messy as shit
greatestheroine 20th-Jun-2013 10:29 am (UTC)
good for you! Idk, the airlines here do give you choices but they taste like paper, or sand. that's why I like the snacks and desserts because at least I can taste the sugar. there's this local airline that does not even offer food (which should automatically come with the fare). and if you buy it, you're paying 300% more. just let me starve. or stealthily eat my prepacked food.
squirrelsarerad 20th-Jun-2013 01:56 pm (UTC)
Same here. I just live all the little food. I kept my teeny tiny bottle of salad from a flight once. It was just so cute lol
squirrelsarerad 20th-Jun-2013 01:57 pm (UTC)
*love
*salad dressing
curdlesnoot 20th-Jun-2013 11:48 am (UTC)
Malaysian airlines used to have the worst food. Heavy spicy curries, lots of meat, lots of opportunities for diarrhoea. I got stuck near the kitchens as a kid once and the smell was so bad I didn't eat anything on the next flight and passed out in the middle of Florence.
yehyijun 20th-Jun-2013 01:12 pm (UTC)
IA, though airline food is significantly better with overseas airlines than those here domestically, which are an utter joke. But your taste buds don't work well while in the air, so nothing will taste 100% delicious and satisfying, no matter how well made it is. :(
squirrelsarerad 20th-Jun-2013 01:51 pm (UTC)
Both times I've flown home from London they've restated me into a center section where I have the whole middle section to myself. It's the most magical experience next to sitting in first class tbh
squirrelsarerad 20th-Jun-2013 01:52 pm (UTC)
Reseated I mean
evocates 20th-Jun-2013 09:16 am (UTC)
Dear Orlando, when did you become so boring????
shimmersea 20th-Jun-2013 09:18 am (UTC)

A face that beautiful is never boring!
evocates 20th-Jun-2013 09:24 am (UTC)
Nah a beautiful face entertains me for like half a second before I'm bored.

He used to be so much more fun and interesting, though. I remember laughing so much listening to him in the cast commentary because he's such a massive dork, fanboying over every single member of the cast and crew.

WHY CAN'T HOLLYWOOD JUST HIRE HIM TO STAND AROUND AND SMIZE AT THE CAMERA IN ALL MOVIES

I WOULD GO TO ALL MOVIES IF THEY DID THAT

THIS!
grammaire 20th-Jun-2013 09:23 am (UTC)
I am so damn bitter at how he/rich people get to travel. Look at all that fucking space.
knockelles 20th-Jun-2013 10:39 am (UTC)
Lol mte. I was on a flight last month and got so bitter when I caught a glimpse of first class while I squeezed my ass into a tiny seat for 12 hours.
wauwy 20th-Jun-2013 10:53 am (UTC)
Seethe

Actually, I've mentioned this in like every flight-related post ever, but more than half of the ppl in first class at any time are regular Joes. My uncle is a retired Delta pilot and he hooks me up with standby tickets at a ridiculously reduced price, and the airline boards from first class down. So I've flown first class from New York to Tokyo five times in the past two years for $200 each way. It is fucking incredible.

The airline does it because they want passengers to see a full first class when they board. Make friends with a pilot, for real.
curdlesnoot 20th-Jun-2013 11:54 am (UTC)
I HATE YOU and your SNEAKY WAYS. Nepotism tbh.

My mom likes to tell the story of the time she flew first class because the check in guy tried to charge her a baggage fee (to pocket the cash, this was back in the 80s) and she beat him over the head with her handbag. They bumped her to first and gave her a chauffeur driven car to get home.
patiently 20th-Jun-2013 11:54 am (UTC)
i have to fly to frankfurt on july 8th, wanna hook me up ;) ;) ;) kidding obv but that's really awesome.
imabadkid 20th-Jun-2013 01:22 pm (UTC)
It really wasn't all that nice tbh
mjspice 20th-Jun-2013 03:16 pm (UTC)
LOL IA. We have to sit with the crazies.
shimmersea 20th-Jun-2013 09:28 am (UTC)

I EVEN TRIED TO DEFEND YOUR ACTING IN ELIZABETH TOWN A COUPLE TIMES, DO YOU KNOW HOW HARD THAT IS?!

Oh wow I misjudged the direction of this thread. Carry on.

I'm sorry, this tiny two-comment thing is killing me way more than is appropriate and could deliver the final blow with a single I'VE MADE A TERRIBLE MISTAKE gif
coulson 20th-Jun-2013 09:38 am (UTC)
lmfao i like how his tips for avoiding jetlag are just "easy, don't get jet lag" ahaha. I wish I could just adjust my sleep for the timezone, it's so hard.

Edited at 2013-06-20 09:40 am (UTC)
willow_diamond 20th-Jun-2013 05:49 pm (UTC)
I find if you adjust it slowly in the days leading up to it it works better.
zimraphel 20th-Jun-2013 09:45 am (UTC)
I will always love Orly, but why do people who own iPhones always insist on referring to their phone as an iPhone instead of just a phone. Apple's really got that word of mouth advertising down.
irl83 20th-Jun-2013 11:48 am (UTC)
You know...that's an excellent point and I've never noticed that until now. I'm totally guilty of that as well. I also work for a cell phone company. Go figure. Lol
raunchyb 20th-Jun-2013 12:30 pm (UTC)
Good point. I think it's a combination of great advertising/branding and it's easy to say. It would be awkward to say something like, "Oh, I can't travel without my Galaxy S Three."
zimraphel 20th-Jun-2013 01:28 pm (UTC)
I understand it with regards to iPod - that's just much shorter and easier to say than 'mp3 player'. That doesn't really go for iPhone/phone though. It kind of bugs me because there's this sort of unconscious undercurrent of superiority that goes along with it. And obviously peer pressure can be a huge incentive for sales, so yeah, that's a clever little trend that Apple's got going.
truelasher 20th-Jun-2013 02:20 pm (UTC)
Honestly, I think its just habit for a lot of people who might have owned an iPhone since the first one, so it just rolls off that way.
longlonglong12 20th-Jun-2013 10:08 pm (UTC)
Late, but people were referring to their phone as their "Blackberry" long before iPhone
