Miracle Of Miracles: Gay Actors Who Aren't Sean Hayes To Play Gay Characters In Something For Once

The Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons is to play a gay rights activist in a new film.

In Glee creator Ryan Murphy’s HBO film The Normal Heart, the actor famed for playing the socially awkward Sheldon Cooper will star alongside many A-list stars.

The film will take place during the HIV crisis in New York City in early 1980s.

Parsons will play Tommy Boatwright, a gay activist, the role that he played in the 2011 Broadway revival of the Tony-winning Larry Krammer play.

The cast includes Julia Roberts as a paraplegic physician who treats several of the earlier victims of the disease.

Mark Ruffalo will play a gay man who witnesses the disease begin to take the lives of many in his community, and Matt Bomer who plays a reporter in the film who becomes the lover of Ruffalo's character.

Last year, Parsons became one of the biggest stars in the US to come out in the quietest way possible.

Speaking to the New York Times about acting in the Broadway version of The Normal Heart, the journalist wrote: ‘[The play] resonated with him on a few levels: Mr Parsons is gay and in a 10-year relationship.’

The Normal Heart production is scheduled to last over the summer with a premiere scheduled for 2014.

Being able to see this in person was one of the greatest theater experiences of my life... I hope the film does the story justice and that the star power helps to bring in bigger audiences. Everyone should know this piece of our history.

perfect first comment. I've been saying similar things in every related post to this movie. I saw it on Bway and when it toured in DC. It may be the most heartbreaking, amazing, important piece of theater I've ever had the pleasure to experience.

i read it for a class a couple years ago, but saw a production last year as part of another course
there was not a dry eye by the end.
i saw it in probably one of the most intimate settings it may be performed in as well
aotearoagal 14th-Jun-2013 03:50 am (UTC)
I hope Ryan Murphy does this justice.

I hope Ryan Murphy does this justice.

I agree completely. The revival with Mantello made me weep all the way home on the train, but my uncle died of AIDS twenty years ago so the subject matter hits home

azrielen 14th-Jun-2013 03:45 am (UTC)
It's a reference to Supernatural. The demons in that show, when they possess people, have inky black eyes.
qween_frostine 14th-Jun-2013 03:24 am (UTC)
Matt Bomer's face is too fucking perfect.
lucyhale 14th-Jun-2013 03:51 am (UTC)
It really is, in kind of a creepy way. Like he is way too symmetrical.
saintvlas22 14th-Jun-2013 08:13 am (UTC)
I know. I should find him hot, but it's like looking at a marble statue of perfection. It's asexual in a way.
_______awshucks 14th-Jun-2013 03:24 am (UTC)
I love that Jim is reprising his role, I saw (and met him) when he did it on Bway. Did anyone else here see the Bway show? Because I need others who understand to cry tears of joy and sadness with
especially Matt's character. I'm tearing up just thinking about it.

i saw a local production at a small lgbt-based theater
everyone was sobbing by the end. it's definitely in my top 5 of productions i've seen.
munchkin1616 14th-Jun-2013 04:06 am (UTC)
saw it then also, the same day as the Pride Parade, 48 hrs after Marriage Equality passed in NY. It was epic on so many levels.
_______awshucks 14th-Jun-2013 04:16 am (UTC)
as excited as I am about it becoming a movie and a lot of the actors attached, I kind of wish they would have just did a special filming right off the Bway stage and then showed it on television. Nothing beats the rawness of the stage and the acting and even the names projected through out the theater...it was just all incredible. I can't speak more highly of the show.
mscherhorowitz 14th-Jun-2013 03:25 am (UTC)
Matt Bomer is so pretty, it's almost unseemly.
invisible_cunt 14th-Jun-2013 03:26 am (UTC)
the fact that ryan murphy is behind this makes me cry rage.
i love this play so fucking much and saw an incredible production of it last year that had me sobbing inconsolably. i don't need ryan to fuck it up.
_______awshucks 14th-Jun-2013 03:28 am (UTC)
I'm so scared. I said this in the post with the pics of Taylor Kitsch as Bruce but if his monologue at the end of the show (movie) doesn't have me sobbing like a baby on the ground, I'm going to be disappointed.
invisible_cunt 14th-Jun-2013 03:32 am (UTC)
i never watched fnl so i don't know much about taylor and his abilities
but i just realized how perfect jim is as tommy
and mark as ned.
